there are certain times when you really need that beer, coming off the beach on a hot day, at the end of hard days walking (or in the middle)
so which one do you go for?
-
another dilemma: which first after a day at the beach, cold beer or shower?
of course if there's a fridge in your accommodation you can do both at once

We cannot wait that long!
To end a beach day:
A last dive in the sea, a cold shower on the beach, a cold draught Mythos in the beachbar and watch the sundown makes our day.

we usually make it to the Ostraco and sit out by the beach witha cold bottle of Mythos
(and watch the horizon tilting )

We found an interesting article (with Plakias and Myrthos in it) about Greek beers.
We are going to try them out any way next time in Greece as we go for local drinks and dishes anyhow.

The Souvlakia House (The Hut) sells "black" beer from the Rethymnon brewery. See here. (http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?act=faq&article=31)
Very good but much more expensive than Mythos and not so suitable to the ambience/climate of Plakias in my opinion. However at home I would never drink the Mythos/Amstel type of beers. You can't beat real ale, can you?

It is all a matter of personal taste I found a beer forum with 24950 different beers reviewed. I suppose there are good and bad ales as well. I do not think I am going to sample all of them. My personal experience local drinks taste better in their own local ambience. In the UK I prefer to drink UK draught beers. Etc.

In Greece I drink Amstel. Since it's brewed in Greece I consider it a local beer. Am I wrong? When I travel I always try out the local stuff, and normally I find something I like.

Hello Chris,
I'm surprised you didn't try it in May this year. I know you went to the Souvlakia House as you wrote a review (one of the "few"). Maybe the Medousa's raki was more appealing! The "black" beer isn't black like Guinness but, as I say, brown like a bottled IPA (remember John Courage in the 60s/70s, or are you too young?). The black beer really stands out in Greece where almost all the beers are what we would call lagers at home.
I agree that local beers and foods are best in Greece (and anywhere I guess). e.g taramosalata, Mythos/Amstel.
Although I voted for Mythos I would be pushed to tell the difference between it and Amstel. Could you distinguish them? Both are brewed in Greece I think.
There used to be other Greek beers like Fix and Henniger that I never see now.

Hi Mike
we always make for the souvalaki house when we arrive late (and a few other times as well) but i went for the Mythos I'd been dreaming about since getting on the plane!
we don't (or didn't) really get a lot of southern beers like courage up in the north but i do know what an IPA is like. My favourite pub has it's own brewery and making a magnificent IPA along with many others

Marble Arch brewery looks interesting and its good to see that in spite of the best (or worst) efforts of the major brewers, real ale breweries, including micros, are flourishing and the latter are springing up all over the place.
I'm not quite sure of the significance of the beers being vegan. With the possible exception of finings (which not all brewers use) I can't see what there is in beer which would not meet a vegan's requirements. I make beer at home and there is nothing in it derived from an animal.
Mike

I can seriously recommend their beers, the IPA is my favourite but i've been known to have the odd pint of Chocolate Heavy, a sort of bournville guinness and the Ginger beer is quite refreshing and different

This tread has now taken on a life of its own, and is wandering into the delightful landscape of the beers of the world. Great.
Living in Norway with its very high alcohol prices reduces quite effectively the enjoyment of beer, but like all norwegians I compensate for this every time I go abroad.
When in GB I prefer to drink Guinnes stout. I have also tasted some really good ales, and I have a question to you who sit on the expertise: what is the difference between Real Ale and Pale Ale?

I'm not claiming to be expert so I'll quote some people who do.
The term "Real Ale" was invented by a pressure group called the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA): here's a definition from their website www.camra.org.uk
Real ale is beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.
Real ale is also known as 'cask-conditioned beer', 'real cask ale', 'real beer' and 'naturally conditioned beer'.
Pale ale is a particular style of beer; there's also India Pale Ale, Light Ale, Brown Ale and so on, you can read definitions at the website of Michael Jackson (no, not that one): [a href=\"http://www.beerhunter.com/beerstyles.html]http://www.beerhunter.com/beerstyles.html
Hope this helps.

Great link, I just spent about an hour on the site and enjoyed every minute. Theory is good, but can't beat real thing, so I am glad I am booked in for two weeks at University of York in spring. Day time pursuits will be all academic, but the evening activities are more on the practical side.

Hello Tom,
As alcohol is very expensive in Norway is it possible to make your own? Although considered in the UK these days as a rather "anoraky" thing to do (i.e. unfashionable, carried out by a rather dull person) I still make beer, but at high strength (10-11% ABV). One pint is plenty for me. If you can't buy a kit locally then bring some back from York. It's really easy.
In the 1960's-1980's making beer and wine at home was fashionable in the UK but not any more. However you can still buy kits or there are always the base ingredients.
I can offer you assistance online if required.

For those in the UK, Wetherspoons now have a wide range of bottled lagers of the world (Polish, Turkish, Mexican, Czech, etc, etc). Mind you, I'll stick to their excellent real ales.

Ah, yes we are allowed to make our own beer and wine at home, and at any given time there vill be something fermenting in 1 out of 5 households in Norway. The quality of the products is normally not very high, often due to the impatience of the brewer.
Prices of liquor are far more out of proportion with the rest of the world than beer and wine, so about every second home has a still making crude, and highly illegal spirits from a fermented sugar, yeast and water mixture. Again the quality is often poor because of the afore mentioned impatience. If you ever had bad, yeast-smelling raki, you'll know what I'm talking about.
I will be looking at the beer kits in York, and carry one home in my anorak breast-pocket.

Don't mistake quality for strength Chris. I just prefer it that way, but I find they are more reliable at higher strength. A microbiologiest could explain why.
For Tom, I buy kits at Wilkinson (Wilko) although there isn't a branch in York. See their website for the nearest. [a href=\"http://www.wilko.co.uk/stores]Wilkinson's stores. Other than that a specialist home brew/wine making shop, although there aren't many of them these days. Maybe someone else can help.
Re. distillation, I wouldn't go there. You can easily concentrate any methanol or other toxics in the process and this could make you go blind or other nasty things. You would need to monitor the product with expensive equipment (gas chromatograghy) or be very experienced in distillation. You are unlikely to poison yourself with homemade beer or wine if it went wrong; it just wouldn't be palatable.

Aah - - I just remembered the the name of my favorite Swiss beer = Rugenbrau. Back in the 80s i spent a few winters skiing in the alps. Relaxing with a pint after skiing was part of the experience. A bit like the bottle(s) of Amstel while waiting to get into one of the two showers at Philipos hostel in Plakias. With a slight difference in temperature though.

Hello Tom (Toma2).
When in York there are two Wetherspoon pubs. You can search their website for the exact locations. Click here. (http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/) There you will find their new selection of bottled beers of the world plus (I'm guessing, from other Wetherspoon pubs) 6-8 real ales, many local to York. Wetherspoons are one of the cheapest chains of pubs in the UK and their beer is usually in excellent condition and served at the right temperature (12-14C?).
There is even a small (real ale) brewery in York. They do guided tours and a tasting. Click here. (http://www.yorkbrew.demon.co.uk/)

I am getting to like stonger beers these days, i think it odd that the major british breweries can't make strong beer without losing all the flavour and making it taste so disgusting sweet
Mike I've had strong homebrews that actually still retained their 'ale' flavour, i assume that's the effect you go for

Hello Chris,
You are correct. When I first started well over 30 years ago I bought the loose ingredients (malted barley, hops, etc). However, as time pressures became more significant I went over to kits, which are much less labour intensive.
These days I buy a 5 gallon bitter kit and make it up to 3 gallons only (thus concentrating the flavour) and add sufficient sugar to obtain the required alcoholic strength. Beer yeast will ferment to 10-11% without too much trouble so there is no residual sweetness.
Re. the "black" beer in the Souvlakia House in Plakias, by all means try it as a novelty. However, I suspect that, like me, you will think Mythos suits the ambience of Plakias much better and is cheaper. In fact, I personally nearly always drink the local house carafe wine in Greek tavernas.
Mike
-
Having just come back from Plakias and tried them all, I voted for Alpha although most of the time I was drinking Mythos as it's more widely available. Not on the list but worth a mention is Zorbas. The draught Mythos was very good but we noticed a few bars serving draught in 400ml measures rather than 500ml and not always indicating the size on the menu (the taverna by Damnoni beach).

i prefer my mythos in bottles

Had a look at York Brewery and found out that they sell their products at 3 pubs at the university. This means that I can try out the ales without bothering my logistics department too much.

I think 10-11 % is to much for me, as I like the taste better than the buzz. Looking back, I have not tasted extra strength beer since those days when (and this very long ago) making girls loose some of their inhibitions was the main objective of the evening.
In Plakias I also prefer the open house wine with my evening meal. It usually goes really well with the food.

Quite right. It's shot from the top floor balcony at Manolia. As for the pegs, they definitely belong in the picture, even though they proved to weak to prevent the meltemi from taking off with a couple of towels. Thinking about it, the pegs should probably have been replaced by a glass or two containing cold Amstel, this is after all a beer tread.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. Spent 7 days in Pefkos Rhodes in September. I found Mythos really refreshing at lunchtime in the beach cafe, but I preferred Amstel in the evenings, not sure why, seemed a bit smoother. I thought it was Belgian?
Funny how I enjoy lager in Greece, because I can't stand it in England, I'm a real ale man. Must be the heat.

real ale and greek sun just don't seem to go together, do they
i now know that Amstel was originally a Dutch beer, but i'm pretty sure the greek version is made in greece
Pefkos is just over the headland from Lindos ,IIRC

I like to think I have a reasonably discerning palate for real ale, and although I enjoy Greek beers in Greece I'm not sure I could distinguish Amstel, Mythos, or Alfa in a blind tasting. I suspect I'm not the only one in truth.
Amstel is Dutch although brewed for the Greek market in Athens.
On to retsina. In Lesvos, Retsina Malamatina in 0.5L. bottles is widely availably in tavernas and shops but I don't recall it being available in the southerly islands such as Crete. It is made in Thessaloniki, Greece's second city in the north of the country. I find some retsinas too bland for my palate, but not Malamatina.

Hi Harribobs,
Yes that's where Pefkos is. I'm told that Plakias now is how Pefkos used to be a few years ago, before the stag and hen parties found it. We enjoyed ourselves, but it was hard to find a bar that didn't have football on TV and 80's music blaring loud. I wouldn't go in a bar like that in England, so why on holiday?
I'd like to meet a few Greek people who aren't trying to sell me something. Is Plakias like that?

Doesn't sound like the Pefkos i knew!
Plakias has got a nice mix of bars and tavernas, there are some loud bars but it's never a 'stag and hen' type place ( and long may that continue) most nights i'm happy to stay in the taverna all night
As for them selling you something, no plakias isn't like that
-
We've been to Pefkos twice (6 and 4 years ago) and has a good time on both occasions. It was slightly busier than Plakias but small and friendly. We've recommended it to others thinking of going to Rhodes so I hope it hasn't been spoilt in the last few years.

Harribobs is right but I would go even further and say that it is quite rare for Greeks to be pushy in trying to do business. Exceptions would be the waterside tavernas in Rethymnon or Mykonos or a few shops in Rhodes Town. That's one of the many nice things about Greece, unlike Turkey or Tunisia.

Does anyone else find some of the retsinas bland or is it just me? I like a real "pine resin" bite to them. Need to be served well chilled, which they usually are.

We saw someone unconscious at one bar, and the hotel we stayed in sold alcohol to a very young person who had to be carried out by his friends. One night we were kept awake by a stag party in the hotel bar.
I must emphasise that we still had a good time, but I think the rot is starting to set in. Lindos and Lardos were not like that at all.
Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of drunken nights myself, but didn't go to Pefkos for them, as I was told it was quiet.

I didn't mean they were pushy, I meant I'd like to have a drink with a Greek person and a chat. I didn't meet any in Pefkos who weren't waiters, barpeople or shopkeepers. Interestingly, the two Greeks we did get into conversation with had returned from Melbourne and Inverness! One was over gyros in Rhodes New Town, the other in a taxi from Lardos. It was very strange talking to Greeks with Aussie and Scottish accents. Both of them were very friendly.
I think the problem with Pefkos is that there's not much there except tourist development. When you go to normal towns you start to meet local people.
I certainly did not mean to criticise Greek people, as I found (most of) them very friendly and helpful.

Wow..just had a look at that forum and the comments, and its a bit frightening. I wonder (and strongly suspect) that it's the Faliraki influence. Someone has seen another town which can make money the same way
Most of us on the forum like a drink but a drink in Plakias is more like having a laugh with friends

we don't (or didn't) really get a lot of southern beers like courage up in the north but i do know what an IPA is like. My favourite pub has it's own brewery and making a magnificent IPA along with many others

We found an interesting article (with Plakias and Myrthos in it) about Greek beers.
We are going to try them out any way next time in Greece as we go for local drinks and dishes anyhow.

I wrote the article in Pints West but unfortunately it is out of date. The bar in Myrthios has removed Craft beer from the menu and the Sky Restaurant in Rethimnon have stopped because the price was raised such that they would need to charge over six euros for a glass. However it is still available fairly widely in Athens and is good quality although expensive. I can recommend the bar next to the pet shop in the Town Hall Square about 100 metres from Omonia and a small bar on the edge of Iroon Square near Monasitaki. Bob.

Thank you Bob, we will cross it out from things to do in Plakias 2006. We have a few Mythos in stead. We donot think Craft beer is worth a de-tour via Athens as our flight is a direct one to Chania / Heraklion.
Cheers
NB Good article any way!

I'm not convinced there is such a thing as a "quick pint". I popped into the pub for "just the one" after work last night and managed to leave 3 hours and four and a half pints of IPA later.
-
Yes, I had a "quick" pint one day, then two days later i got home! we say we can't drink all day in UK but there is always a way! Luckily those days are behind me!

aqua vita is a spirit/liquer isn't it Tom?
Yes, from Latin = Water of life.
The Norwegian variety "Akevitt" is made from potatoes, spiced with caraway seeds and stored in oak casks onboard ships that sail between Norway and Australia. Every cask is suposed to cross the equator at least twice. It acquires a nice golden colour. Many Norwegians have a shot or two with their christmas eve dinner. The bottle should be stored in the freezer for 12 hours before it is served, and drunk before the temperature rises to 0 C. Do not ask...... it is just tradition.

Beachcombers and Harribobs we are locals and also know F & F.
It might be nice to meet sometime in Antwerp (I must warn you that the weather is dreadfull at the moment, rain, wind, cold.... , but I expect that must also be so in England and Walcheren in the Netherlands ? )
I am amazed that you would know the Quinten Matsijs, it is not particulary easy to find...

I see, i would love a visit to Antwerp but i don't know when we'll be over, hopefully we get a visit to Flanders in the New Year
you are right, the weather in the UK is the same, cold, windy and lots of rain
i only found the Quinten Matsijs through a google search, I don't think I have ever been there, but i'm always happy to try a new pub! No doubt beachcombers are recovering from their visit
I have added a new belgium beer to my knowledge this weekend, Kwak! very nice it was as well

Hi LoukaFran,
We were at "Quinten Matsijs" last Friday ± 16:00, a bit too early and found the place quite empty therefore decided to go a bit further and had a few Leffe blondes at "t 'Miniatuurske" had dinner in "t'Hofke"and ended in "'van Beveren". with a lot of "bollekes"
I think we know our way in Antwerp.
Looking forward to meet you in some pubs in Antwerp similar to above mentioned two pubs .

Nice photo ! Cafe Beveren is very well known for the atmosphere.
I am surprised you can buy Kwak over there Harribobs.
I expect you did not drink it in the long tall glas with the wooden holder ?
It's a very tricky way of drinking beer. Either you do not manage to get a sip or else you get the whole lot over you...
A warning: because of the fact that the beerglass and wooden holder are so special the tradition used to be that when you ordered a Kwak you had to give one of your shoes as a deposite. This shoe would only be given back when you returned the glass and holder. Your shoe would be put in a sort of fishingnet and would be raised up to the ceiling so that you could not reach it. In some cafés this tradition still exists !!
-
I was very surprised myself to find the shop myself, it is in the south of the city where i don't go very often, they are selling belgium specialities...including beer
they must have had 30 or so beers, mostly christmas specials but Leffe ( which I have found a good place to buy cheaply, not is shop) also Orval and a few others I had heard of
they were selling Kwak gift set with a very strange glass, but we could not work it out, mandy thought it would be better for putting flowers in
great story about the shoe and the net ! I think i have GOT to get one of those glasses now ( and some kwak to drink from it )

A disco I infrequently visited (in my first youth) had some glasses with this shape as one of it's major attractions. Only difference was that they were 1 meter long. You were only allowed to try them if you took part in a beer drinking race on the stage. Yes, an extra pair of shoes + shirt and trousers would have been useful for all the contestants.

I can advise to change over to the metric system
As you can see much easier to handle
1 meter beer:

and the calculations are much simpler too
1 meter = 1000 mm
1 yard = 36000 mil (914.4 mm)
Leen
-
Still using the imperial units

[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=5117\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
METRIC???
hey! we still use pounds shillings and pence here !!
-
and the calculations are much simpler too
1 meter = 1000 mm
1 yard = 36000 mil (914.4 mm)
I don't quite get it! Can you convert it to Euros please.
-
Surely a yard is 1.705 litres?
-
hmmm maybe if we convert it back to drachmas?
-
No, that would make it 39.35 inches.

there are certain times when you really need that beer, coming off the beach on a hot day, at the end of hard days walking (or in the middle)
so which one do you go for?

If those Belgium beers are as good as you suggest, then I'm glad they're not available here. They would wreck my economy long before they got to the liver.
I tried a canned Guinness last Saturday. 2,50 GBP at the supermarket and it left me slightly irritated and yearning desperately for a real one. Only 8 more weeks (being positive here), before I can settle down in a Yorkshire pub for a few.

Yes, thank you, but I chose to ignore it. Any spare time in York is going to be spent in a traditional Yorkshire environment. That signifies a pub, with a glass of ale or stout. Actually, I prefer British beverages to anything the Greeks produce. Well, at least when I am in Britain. Single Malts, Guinness and ales are what I am looking forward to.
Ouzo, raki and Amstel belong on Crete, and I once had an experience in a Greek restaurant in London that made me very cautious of visiting one again. It's a story including two German hippy-girls, a bad case of Bistromathics (see Douglas Adams) and it is too extended to be told here. It will appear in my memoirs.

The Black Sheep is already on my list. But thanks anyway. I appreciate your concern for my welfare.
The other day, I caught myself eagerly devising plots designed as excuses for moving some of the work out of the auditorium and into the Public House. When I realized what I was doing, I had to admit to myself that this beer tread is actually influencing my thinking. Scary!
Tom
-
Black Sheep, Riggwelter (England)
The name is Yorkshire dialect for a sheep that has rolled onto its back and cannot get up again - perhaps a veiled warning about this beer's strength. Riggwelter pours a very dark chocolate, almost black colour with a cream-coloured head that is quite dense. On the nose lots of toast, roasted aromas and chocolate malt, with a little citrussy note peeking through. On the palate it is a medium-bodied beer, with plenty more dark, espresso and roasted barley flavours, and a dry, savoury character. Hops are minimal, though there is a juicy acidity to keep it fresh. A bright and crisp style of stout-like dark beer. 5.7% ABV, 50cl, £1.79, down to £1.34

Black Sheep, Riggwelter (England)
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=5940\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
Riggwelter must come from Nordic. It is not a Norwegian word any more, but if it was it would be spelt “ryggvelter” (rygg = back and velte = fall over). I think I will add it to my Norwegian vocabulary as a description of a person who is liable to roll over on his/her back……and as a description of a very strong drink.
You gave an experts description of it, so I am realy looking forward to tasting Black Sheep's Riggwelter.

"
Beer Guy: Sampling Belgian beers
By Dan Oliver
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 20, 2006
Belgium has been called "the Disneyland of beer" and with good reason. If a determined beer lover decided to sample one Belgian beer a day until trying them all, he or she would spend the better part of two years accomplishing the feat. And what a feat it would be! There are 110 breweries in Belgium, producing 650 different types of beer. The country is a popular tourist destination for that very reason, attracting thousands of devoted followers who flock there each year to sample the incredible variety of Belgium's unique brews"
And in Greece ......... we only drink and enjoy Greek beers like Mythos and Greek wines not only in bottle but from especially from the "spiti"
(or home wines).
Do not tell us that we do not know what is good !
-
If there are any beer drinkers who would like to try the Craft Beer which is from a micro brewery in Athens (previously mentioned by Bob) it is now possible to get it at On the Rocks and very nice it is too.

I know it is rather late but I think I should report on my liquid experiences in York. I have been home a month now, and I have needed that time to digest all the input I had. The transition from English to Norwegian beer prices was not smooth, and it caused me to sober up quickly.
Most evenings were spent in lively company visiting between two and 10 pubs, and the Guinness was always excellent. I tried to find the Riggwelter, it was hard. On the third last evening I found a place that had it, but only in bottles. It was good, but after such a long search it should have been better. I quite quickly returned to my Guinness. I tried several other ales from Black Sheep and Young’s, and did not find a single one I did not like.
The worst pubs I visited were all at the university. We quickly located the nearest off-campus watering holes. They were only five minutes away, and although both had half a dozen large TV screens they still served good meals and excellent brews.
I’ll not bore you with all details, so I’ll only mention the one pub I liked the most. Located in the medieval part of town, and reputedly the most haunted pub in York, it was called The Golden Fleece. No TVs, no loud music, no level floors, actually not a single 90 degree angle in the whole place, but with loads of atmosphere and excellent service. Initially I thought “The most haunted” would be a tourist trap, but it isn’t. We only met one other foreigner there.
Tom
-
two to ten pubs???
did the Golden Fleece have 90 degree angles before you started on the black stuff?
it sounds like you enjoyed your stay mate

I see Amstel is up a point or two again, Hurray.
I guess the lager consumption over there in Britain have risen to new hights the last few days, eh? The heat is on.

Nope, 6 degrees this morning. Only sign of summer is the tourists. I recived a gift of Belgian beer today: "Jupiler" MMMMMMMM ah, not bad for a blond. But I will save the rest of them for a hotter day.

Don't know how this thread escaped me until now given it's one of my favourite subjects. Have to admit I wasn't that taken with the craft beer at On the Rocks, didn't think it had that much in the way of flavour. The best beer I came across in Plakias were the two organic bottled beers available in the Souvlaki House, a blond and a dark ale. Very nice.

The summer has finally hit Lofoten. For the last few days we have been suffering under a scorching heat approaching 15 C in the shade, cloudless skies and 19 hours of sunshine every day I have had several trips to the "Far End" of Lofoten in order to cool down in the sea (11 C) My tan has improved about 400 % and I have finished off my Jupilers They accompanied my daily BBQs.

Rather like a hint of diluted JUPILER seen through my almost translucent skin but a "hint of blue" is considerably more than a hint when I have just come out of the ocean.....

It's OK in my book to help yourself to something that is only going to be dumped anyway, but I felt really sorry for the South African lady who watched her family heirlooms being taken. Also, the rubbish these people have generated is awful.

I had a beer called Zorba during my first adventure in Plakias. Interesting.
But, here in the States I will usually settle on a Samuel Adams (Boston, MA, USA), Corona (Mexico) or if I'm in a good mood and it is being sold by the glass Bass Ale (one of my favorites).
My vote is cast for Mythos.

Quick answer to my above question .....
Alfa is available - on draught - at K/Costas Chrysoula; Sofia and Lamon .... and probably several other places, too.
Next question:
Does anybody else think that canned Mythos tastes:
a} nothing like Mythos?
b} as bad as any other canned lager?

Hello,
I can't answer this but I do think (bottled) Mythos is the best of the Greek beers and they are appropriate to the ambience and climate of Greece. However, none can compare to the complexity and scope of the wonderful range of real ales we have in England.

Hi, Mike,
No argument from me about the joys of British beers/ales .... however, I don't think they would be as enjoyable in Greece. (Unless, like Dave {of the Village Store} you have been starved of them for a long time .)
As you say, it's all about ambience and climate. In Greece, my preferred swill is draught Alfa or bottled Fix (hard to find) - bottled Mythos is always a good alternative if neither of those is available.
Re. Amstel - having lived in Holland for a few years, the stuff served under that name in Greece is (1) definitely NOT Amstel and (2) bettered suited to Greece than the original but no substitute for Alfa or Mythos (IMHO).
Re. Zorbas - still haven't found any on sale! We went in the Livicon (advertising board outside) only to be told "Sorry, there's no demand - we don't stock it any more."

Does anybody else think that canned Mythos tastes:
a} nothing like Mythos?
b} as bad as any other canned lager?
you forgot
c} dreadful
i don't if it's just my taste buds, the heat, or whatever but canned beer doesn't work out there
certainly doesn't taste like mythos, certainly does taste of the can

1. It must be your taste buds - just like mine
2. In my simple world view, I thought c} was automatically part of b}
The only good thing about canned Mythos is the absence of the dreaded widgit }

I've been going to Greece for over 20 years and for all that time Amstel has been available but I only remember Mythos in latter years. Is this right? I'm sure someone will know.
I think I agree with Chas about real ale not going well in Greece, although I haven't tried it there.
I don't normally drink alcohol on the plane but a few years ago I did as the captain sent out 2 rounds of free drinks to compensate for the plane being about 50 meals short and a delay on take-off. I chose Stella Artois which I hadn't tried before (I'm not a lager drinker except in Greece). To my taste it was markedly inferior to the Amstel I had been drinking in Greece.

Mike,
Mythos, Alfa and the lesser-known Greek beers have only been around for the last 10 years at the most. When I first started going to Greece (17 years ago), Amstel was the only beer available in a lot of places, but some had Heineken as well. There was nothing else. Pumps were a rarity and I don't remember cans, so it was all bottles. The bottles then were 500ml and 300ml (smaller than the present 330ml).

When I first visited Greece (Thasos) in 1972, there seemed to be only two beers available in the tavernas. A greek beer whose name I cannot remember and a beer named Falcon. This tasted much better. Both were sold in 50cl bottles and if I remember correctly, the greek one was 10 drachma and the Falcon 11 drachma. A good dinner could be had for 15 to 20 drachma and wine was half the price of beer. Happy days!
The Falcon was brewed in Greece, but was owned by either Amstel or Oranjeboom.

Hello Greecemad,
Thanks for confirming my memory re. Mythos being relatively recent. The other local beer widely available when I first visited about 20 years ago was Henninger, but I haven't seen it for years. If you wanted something brewed in Greece it was Amstel or Henninger.

Thinking back to our early visits (1980 on), the choice was between bottled Henniger and draught Watneys Red Barrel (both imported) ..... I have seen the odd Henniger in recent years but (thank goodness) no Red Barrel (http://zorbas.de/scripts/phpBB2/images/smiles/078.gif)

For more information about Greek beers see the following:
http://grecja.home.pl/eng/epiwo.htm (http://grecja.home.pl/eng/epiwo.htm)
It appears that I was spot on when I said Mythos had only been available for about the last 10 years - apparently it was created in 1997.
I have heard previously that there were original Greek beers that weren't very good, and that after Amstel and Heineken started brewing in Greece, nobody wanted the original Greek beers so they went out of business.

No, George,
I thought I mentioned it somewhere above ....
Rumour factory: the Fix brewery was "closed" a few years back because of "corruption" and "tax evasion" ..... however, I have seen a few empty crates and bottles in the last twelve months - the one place that was open had no stock left - just empties :'(
IMHO, it's less "sticky" than Mythos but not quite as sharp as Alfa - still a good drink (http://www.chatitaliachat.it/serpe/mangia/27.gif)

I remember now, I'm just getting over a head cold so my heads a bit thick!

i had a can of Fix ( in fact was given ) last may, it went down rather well on a red hot beach

Personally I found the Amstel seemed to be gassier than the Mythos, so I preferred the latter. I also assumed that the Amstel wasn't local, so again I chose the Mythos.

If you think Amstel (Dutch, I think) is gassy, try the draft Alpha!! , excuse me!

I knew this thread would be a good idea, already i have got two new brews to seek out next year
The black beer sounds very interesting, (an IPA style mmmm,) as do the Craft Brewery beers
Mike
Rethymnon Blondes are more fun! Just come back from lovely Plakias, the street Souvlaki outside Sifis serves the blond brew. Absolutely delicious.
-
Amstel is definitely brewed in Greece (tho' I can't remember exactly where).
The "Corali" has both Rethymno dark and light beer on the menu. If I go there next year I will try one or t'other as an alternative to my usual Mythos.

sifis's also sells the rethyemaki beers! €2.70 for 250ml bottle though (and don't let him pour it, he doesn't understand sediment )
when we were having our last meal at the kastro yesterday i spotted a bottle of Mythos Red, never seen it before, yanni said it was very nice and said that the mythos brewery had been bought out by an english company (???)
-
... the mythos brewery had been bought out by an english company (???)
If memory serves ..... Scottish & Newcastle bought it about four years ago.
OMG! Is Mythos Red really Newckie Brown ????
-
Just been talking to a mate of mine just got back from Skiathos. Said it was expensive and a 500ml size of Mythos was 3.5 euros.
What's the price in Plakias, anyone, who's already been this year??
I don't drink a lot of it maybe a couple or three during the day , but there are some forum members (no names mentioned here ) who live on the stuff, so they'll be interested too!

Three weeks ago, the cost for 500ml bottled Mythos was €2.50, in Mastixari, on Kos.
Draught Alfa was €3 (and well worth it IMHO).
(http://www.chatitaliachat.it/serpe/mangia/128.gif) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! That's better (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/more/bigs/c005.gif)

€2.50 a bottle in the tavernas in paleohora, €.90 in the supermarket on the balcony.............

as he bucked up yet? we used to go in for a late beer but stopped going in cos he was such a misery, so went into his uncle's place next door
-
Hi
A bit out of touch with the prices as with the new job not going out nearly as much, don't swoon those of you who have known us a few years!!
Some of the Tavernas are certainly still doing Mythos as 2 euro but the bars tend to be from 2.80 up. With draft at around 3.
If you're wanting different beer for a change, don't forget 'On The Rocks' which has the draft beer from the Craft micro brewery in Athens. Well worth a taste and whilst it can be a bit expensive, the bar is a great place to relax and have a chat and the beer is definitely worth trying.

He was fine when I was there Chris, except one Saturday evening when he got a bit stroppy with local kids doing wheelies just outside his place. That magnificant moustache gives him the impression of someone you wouldn't want to fall out with!

aye he was good in June when i was there, pulled me in for a pint and a chat

there are certain times when you really need that beer, coming off the beach on a hot day, at the end of hard days walking (or in the middle)
so which one do you go for?
