Where to eat...or not! / Where to eat?

Ostraco, Since we all spend so much time and money doing it and lots of time talking about it, how about a new forum entitled 'Where to eat'?

And, while I'm here, since that is what prompted the thought, could someone help out my aged failing memory (pardon?) with the name of the taverna by the bridge with the bossy Greek Cypriot lady taking the orders?

Not that I'd criticise the place.  After all, we keep going back there!

Plakias / Spending in Plakias

These days, we tend to take a few Euros and then depend on the ATMs for more cash.  We haven't found many places in Plakias that take credit cards.

Where to go / Crete map 1/50,000 wanted

If anyone knows of a good map of Crete, 1 to 50,000 scale or better, I'd be very grateful to hear about it.

I have the usual 1/200,000 road map but would love to get a better one.

Having done a thorough search of the web and visited my usual mapping specialist I've drawn a blank so far.
There is mention of a 1/50,000 walking map but it only covers 5 small areas of Crete and the Plakias area is not one of them.

We have the Plakias area walking books mentioned elsewhere on this forum.

I've heard that the Greeks don't publish good maps of the islands because they don't want potential invaders to get hold of them.
Wonder if that is true?

Plakias / Crowded Plakias?

Looking at the calendar, there are going to be quite a few of us in Plakias in the first two weeks of September.
The peak arrival dates seem to be 2nd to 4th.
There are also one or two others (Yvonne, martinh, ?) who have said they will be there in forum posts but are not on the calendar.

Maybe we should consider getting together for a meal, Greek style?
You know, you turn up in a crowd, re-arrange all the tables in the taverna so you can all sit at one big table and none of the other customers get a look-in for ages!
We could even negotiate a discount!

Anyone interested in meeting for dinner on Tuesday 9th September please respond to this topic with your suggested venue and a reason.
I'd suggest we avoid the places that are always full as they might not want us anyway.
