Gossip / Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL
« on: December 22, 2004, 01:31:53 PM »
As the title says, here's wishing everyone the compliments of the season, and may all your wishes be fulfilled.
Heading Crete way again next year but not sure if we'll pitch up in Plakias, may go somewhere different.
For no other reason than lots of the Island still to see, and why not.

Have a safe one, have a happy one and best regards to all.

Cheers

PlakChat / Nearly There !!!!
« on: August 16, 2004, 12:45:34 PM »
Its nearly time to set the alarm for an ungodly hour Tuesday morning to head out to the airport, get on that plane (please be on time.....) and head out for Plak.
Can't wait, as within 24hrs a cold Mythos or few will be welcoming yet another few days in that wonderfull Town.
Will probably post a message from the Forum after one of their indulgent breakfasts with an 'on the spot report'.
Lets hope the forecasted storms have passed through by the time we get there and the wind isn't too strong !!!
For all those yet to travel - have a good one, me, I can't wait to get there to let the Plakian ambience restore the soul, as it has a wonderful habit of doing.
Looking forward to seeing our good friends again, as its been far too long.

Catch you later guys.......................

PlakChat / Far Enders
« on: June 15, 2004, 01:52:08 PM »
Hi All,
as a regular to Plak we have checked out a few of the local swimming/snorkelling beaches - Lefgoya/Damnoni/Souda, but have never actually been to the Eastern end of Plak itself !
We are back in August and was wondering if you could give me some idea as to what its like for snorkelling etc.
Admit I love the Souda end as its got our favourite Taverna - Gallini, where many a long lunch has been spent most enjoyably.
I know a lot of you prefer the 'far end' so grateful to know what its like by comparison, as may well give it a go this August.
We will have a car so assume parking is no problem, ut hey, you guys know all about it so looking forward to your replies.

Thanks

PlakChat / Bedtime Reading
« on: June 02, 2004, 04:01:16 PM »
Greetings all, and trust everyone well and looking forward to the Summer ahead. Myself, am off on the 17th August 'en famile' and can't wait to get back and kick back !!

To the point of this topic - Book on Crete.

I love a good book and have finished for the 3rd time 'Winds Of Crete' (originally read in 1986)- has anyone read it ? If not then thoroughly recommend it. Avaialble from any bookseller in Crete, and am sure have seen it in the main - gift shop - on the front in Plakias

Got me thinking as well, has anyone else read any good books on Crete and if so what are they so I may add to my collection for those long winter evenings ?

Cheers guys,

Pritch

Gossip / A Place In Greece
« on: April 14, 2004, 01:53:39 PM »
Whilst I know not strictly on the topic of Plakias, am I the only one appalled by the behaviour and ignorance of the people on the latest Ch 4 documentary ??
Going to buy a house/land in Crete as after many visits they fell in love with the Island and the people - nothing strange there as we all know. However, for people that have visited the islands 'many times before' don't you think they might just have picked up the odd word, like - good morning/hello not to mention Please and Thank You. Even my 8 year old knows those words !!!
I had to admit to both my wife and I cringing when the guy went into a local Kafenion looking for a local to assist with his quest to purchase, and his first words being 'do you speak English...?'
My Greek I admit is faltering and very basic, and if I weren't in the Company of fluent speakers most of the time, then the least I would have with me would be a phrasebook, but at least try I certainly do.
To make a huge purchase like a house in a different Country - at least learn a few words, manners after all cost nothing.

Happy Easter all, Chronia Polla !!

Plakias / Plakias Members Photo Album
« on: September 14, 2003, 10:50:03 AM »
Having just sorted out the photos from our recent visit it got me thinking about posting some of the more scenic ones to the site, but don't know how to ?
Then I got to think about all the photos collectively we must have taken, and reckoned it would be a good idea to have a sort of 'Members Album' where we could post photos to ?
Reckon this one is more for Admin to fix/sort, but just wondered what everyone else thought ?
I know someone mentioned in a previous thread an issue over copyright, so not sure how that impacts but on the basis that the photos would be willingly 'donated' would it be a problem ?
Anyway, interested to hear what others thoughts are, and if its possible ?

Cheers

Where to go / Links Additions ?
« on: August 29, 2003, 12:18:29 PM »
Not sure if additional links are requiredf but have found this great site, hosted by an English couple who moved out to the NW part of Crete, which gives a great insight into Cretan life.
Whilst not about Plakias, it might be worth a visit or even adding to the Links page - Admin your call.

PlakChat / Who Speaks Greek ?
« on: August 29, 2003, 08:57:13 AM »
Wasn't sure whether to do this as a poll or not, but was wondering how many of us speak Greek ?
I have a very small vocabulary but enough to get by, and certainly only use English as a last resort even if whoever I'm talking to is using English.
Just curious as to whether when in the shops/bars/tavernas you would initiate Greek as the first language or not ?
Interested to find out.

Cheers

Plakias / Car Hire Companies
« on: August 27, 2003, 09:40:31 AM »
All,
I know there has been a number of questions about car hire companies dotted throughout this site, but just though I'd share my recent experience.
We have friends that live in Iraklion who normally have contacts that get a car sorted for me, but their contacts were all elswhere on the island so had to go it alone.
I booked a car through the Interkriti link on this site through a Co called City Cars - www.citycars.gr, who were also some way the cheapest deal I found.
Everything was confirmed on email, and they didn't want any money up front, pay it at the airport, and yes they would prefer cash.
Admit a certain amount of trepidation, will they turn up, will the car be ok etc etc.
Anyway, George was waiting for us at the airport, and was a bit worried, because 'my' car was not ready, so he had to give me a Jeep for the one night, but he would deliver my other car the next day at whatever time I wanted.
The next morning at 0900 (which is what we agreed on) a virtually new, Hyundai Atos with a/c (not originally ordered) was delivered outside our friends appartment. Impressed...yep. Had no probs with car, we did over 500k over the 12 days, and George picked it up from the appt on Sunday as agreed.
He does airport pickups and drop offs, so I would highly reccomend them to anyone thinking of wanting to hire a car.
We paid Euro300 for 12 days, everything included, all insurances everything, and the car was great.
Hope this helps,

Pritch

Plakias / Plakias Update
« on: August 17, 2003, 11:13:06 AM »
Greetings all from the Pritchards here in Plakias.
We arrived on Wednesday to tremendous winds, blowing a real hooly, but that didn't stop us !!
Wind has now gone and the heat is here - marvellous.
Sitting in the Forum Bar typing this discussing which beach to go to today.
Seriously chilled, thoroughly enjoying ourselves, and typing this HERE in Plak - just marvellous.
Got to go as the Frappe's have arrived,

Plakias / Where Not to Go ?
« on: July 29, 2003, 01:29:53 PM »
Anyone reading any of my posts will know were off in a couple of weeks and we'll be spending 6 glorious days with our friends in Plak. We have decided to do a bit more exploring this time, and as you guys seem to be a wealth of information I was hoping you could give us some hints.
We will have cars, so travel not a prob, but don't want to spend hours in a car, so anything under half an hour (or longer if worth it, but you get my drift....)
We have 2 kids 12 and 8, love beaches, snorkelling, long lunches. as its August not into walking too much.
This is very much a 'chill out de-stress' holiday
We've tended to stick fairly close to Plak before, favouring Souda Beach, and lunching/late afternoon beers and Connect 4 in the Taverna Galini.

So, is there anywhere that is not worth going to, and conversely anywhere that we really should go to given the above.

Any suggestions/ideas most welcome.

Cheers

Plakias / Wheres The English Couple ?
« on: June 09, 2003, 09:03:50 AM »
Hi all, first time post, but have been reading the topics for some time now.
I remember reading somewhere on here about an English couple setting up shop, but can't for the life of me find it now - typical.
Has anyone the details (guys if your reading this then apologies for not remembering your names...), as we will be back out again in August, and would naturally like to tender our custom at the place.
Also, the freinds we are going with, live in Crete and frequent Plakias a lot more than we do, so would like to get them to know where you are.
9 weeks and counting before a Mythos or few will be sipped on the balcony at Tasomanolis watching the sun disappear behind the Sleeping Dragon, Kotopoulou Souvlaki from Taverna Galini.....how good is it......you all know.

Cheers and kalo taxidi to anyone heading out.
