Thanks Noopsy - it's good to be back. It's one of the many benefits of retirement. Life's been hectic for the last few years (although I always managed to get my Plakias visit in), but now I can take time to do what I really want.
I'm pleased you like the look - I wanted to get away from the blue and white, and make the whole thing cleaner and less cluttered. I always thought the Links page was important, and will hope to add to it as time goes on! Any suggestions?

Announcements / New site
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:02:57 PM »
I've been aware for several years that the information on the 'Welcome to Plakias' site is out of date - and in places, just wrong! I kept promising myself I would get down to a complete update, and this message is to let you know that I've started work.
Ploppy and I had a lot of discussion about hosting etc - and you'll be aware that the site now sits on a new UK based server. We've also got this swish new forum - all credit to Ploppy, as I couldn't do it without him.
He kept the old site up and running for me while i worked on the new one. It's years since I tackled designing web pages, and I was so rusty I even stared an evening class to try to jog my memory. I'm surprised how things have changed since the site first went live in '98.
I finished my first go at two new pages today, and I hope you'll have a look at them for me, and let me know what you think. Comments on design and content are welcome, and suggestions on what I've done so far and what else is needed  would be much appreciated.
While I'm doing this work, I will keep the old site live, and put the new one at  www.ostraco.co.uk. At first you'll just see links to the pages, then I'll pull it together as a site as things develop (and I remember how to do it!).
I know this is a cheeky way to develop a page, but I feel the strength of Welcome to Plakias is in the input from others!
Feel free to tell me what's bad (and good?) - message me through the board, respond here, or mail me: ostraco@plakias.co.uk.

What's the one that's almost, if not next door to Dave and Ali's, that's closed down? I also noticed that the Glaros around the corner at the top of the hill has closed as well.

If I remember right John O was good friends with the family.

Just noticed my posts, spooky, it's also my average weight 66.6

Glaros was always a favourite of mine - when it was run by Nikos a few years back.
He was refused the renewal of his lease, and the owners started to run it - and in the process ran it into the ground!
Nikos has, however, been working ar Sophias for the last few year - I'll be there next Wednesday having my first Raki of the holiday with him!

An update.

Invision say that they did have some FTP accounts compromised and that all customer were notified to change thier passwords. I don't recall seeing any e-mail (but that doesn't mean I didn't get it  ), I can check later.

I have deleted most FTP accounts and changed passwords (get in touch John if you want to do any uploading).

So there has been a threat since the 9th, however both my home and work machine would have been affected and I have found nothing suspicious on either machine after a full Virus and Spyware scan.

Let me know if you encounter any problems.

Thanks,

Paul
I haven't seen any email either Paul - tho my connection at home is still flakey, and I can't check at work.
Things seem to be behaving OK for me at work today - will also check tonight when I get home.
As for uploading Paul - would love to be doing some re-working of the site - but I can't see that happening in the near future.
Cheers all!

I feel sorry for you Brits. If only you had said yes to the euro, you would not have had any exchange rate problems !

Please don't fell sorry for us Brits, most of us don't want the Euro.
Anyway part of the fun of travelling abroad is using the various currencies.
Lets have campaign (or at least a poll) to bring back the Drachma.
I don't know about the 'most of us'
Personally, I can't wait for the Euro. I've been to Fuertaventura this year, and will be able to spend the spare Euros in Plakias next month - would love to be able to use them at home - and if we all used to Euros all the time it would be much easier for us to compare prices!

Ah - sorry - you said 'us Brits'  - I'm Cornish!

Hi Chas

I used to get the Trojan warning on the home page through 'Sophos', so I tend now to enter the site from the email notification links to the messages.

Haven't been near the home page for ages!!

My IT guys didn't seem all that concerned about it.

I've got a pop-up blocker so wouldn't know about No 2.

I don't know what's going on either - had trouble logging on at work - had to enter my password a few times before it would let me post - but the same happened at home (yes, I do have a slow connection back) - where normally I get straight in!
Let's keep our eyes open!

Thanks for the background info John O.

I bet at the time you didn't have any idea what you were creating.

All I can say is THANKYOU!! I'm sure it keeps us ALL in touch during those withdrawall periods.

And THANKS to Paul once again, for keeping it all up and running

george g...

John R, you might find him in the Ostraco one night, just guessing

we've been once.....

we sat there for 20 minutes and were ignored
That happened to me once, we got up and left, and haven't been back since!

That was a long time ago though.

I've had some good food at Christos - the Shrimp saganaki is popular with my frinds (tho a bit spicy for me)
so, I'd rate it about 6/10 - and as so many other places get 9 or 10 - why bother to return?

Plakias / How often do you do it?
« on: August 10, 2007, 01:23:42 PM »
I think my first visit was in 1984 - I've lost my old diaries, and the memory is certainly not what it was! I do know that I've only missed 2 years since my first visit, and that I have been twice in one year a few times - although I have been trying other places for my second holiday in the past couple of years.

Funny you should mention the site being up and running Paul - it only happened because I needed to learn how to write sites for work, and thought I'd give it a go at home. I wasn't going to spend my spare time writing about Project Management (which is what I was doing then). so I chose Plakias as it was something I wanted to write about.
Another motivator was Steve - who often comes out to Plakias with us. He was talking about writing a site as well - and I spoke to him one day his site was nearly finished, and I hadn't really started. SO I cheated, and cobbled something together with a desktop publishing package. It meant I was able to get something live quickly, but I never did meet Steve's standards.

I was amazed that the site started getting accessed regulalry, and I supposed that encouraged me to try to do it properly. The whole thing needs revamping now - just wish I had the time!  Just you wait until I retire!

Initially the site was just stuck up on some free webspace that I got with my Virgin account - then I moved to BT - but a few years back Steve gave me the plakias.co.uk domain as a present, and it's been there ever since. I think that's one reason we get a good listing in the search engines - its been there so long!

Ploppy mentions the old forum - there was always a bit of interest, but they were difficult to maintain. The latest version is so much better - but so much more complicated - so aren't we lucky Ploppy's around to keep his techie eye on thinks - 'cause I'm rubbish there!

Paul also mentions 9/ll. I flew home from Plakias that day - to Gatwick, with Greg and Loz my regular Plakias mates! We landed in Gatwick early evening - and didn't know anything about what had happened until we were outside the airport and the taxi driver mentioned it to us.

What a long and rambling post from me - sorry. I don't get much chance to sign on these days. I am also currently having problems with my broadband connection. So I logged on at work today - I must do this more often - it's a much better lunch option than going to the pub!

Well - back to work soon - see you in Plakias soon (well - Sept 18th!)

Just a word of caution on Santa Maria - the rooms at the front of the building are great - but there are some smaller ones at the back which are not so good!

BTW John, you have a double, 2 weeks ago you were walking down the road in Spili with an older lady.
He had the same walk same smile same haircut and he looked at me as I drove passed, and seemed to recognise me. Our hols were overlapping at one time but then I saw that you had moved your dates, so it couldn't have been you... could it?

george g...

'twas not I George!
Didn't get to Spili at all this time - now who's trying to look like me? No - we got home on Sept 4th (ish)
I hope you found the new pic of me - it will maybe change your mind!

Well, look how long it takes me to get round to replies! But thanks for your good wishes!
And George, in answer to your request, the attached is only a few weeks old, taken in the glorious Plakias sun. Now who can tell me where?

Many Plakias regulars will remember Jacinta, who was the Olympic rep for a couple of seasons. She's settled in Reythimnon now, with Manolis, who used to drive the train. This is her daughter, Artemis, who managed to get her ice-cream everywhere! (Artemis is the one with the dark hair!)

Where to eat...or not! / Lysseos
« on: October 01, 2006, 02:27:46 PM »
Lysseos is one of the places we eat at very frequently.
The food is always hot and cooked to perfection - my favourite being the smoked pork cutlet. I agree with George about Lito too - she rules the place with a first of iron, speaks to most customers in their own language, and is always happy to tell you about the dishes and make suggestions. Her wicked sense of humour makes the place special!

Having been back a few weeks, I finally managed to get my pics downloaded.

People seem to be getting over the fire - and the land is already recovering, as you'll see in the second picture. You can see the scars still left - but already new growth is evident! In places, the fire came right down to the shore!
