Title: Supermarkets selling local produce
Post by: SunnyC on April 29, 2012, 11:27:10 AM
First post :-)Which supermarkets sell local produce such as home grown tomatoes, cucumbers, water melons and also sell local olives and feta? Do any of them sell wine and raki by the barrel? We're staying at the Dora, so any supermarket down that end would be be better for us.

Hi & welcome
most supermarkets  fruit/veg shops sell fresh Crete produce (not sure how local)
They all sell wine/raki/feta/herbs etc etc.
We can also recommend all the local butchers (3 we know of) they also sell 'house wine' 5 ltre plastic containers...ok after the first taste ...hic..hic.
There is also a fresh fish shop near the Irida appartments
The bakers near the camp site has lovely fresh bread/cakes every morning....although the supermarkets also sell bread.
Hope you have a wonderful time!!!
We go to Plakias 1st to 29th May staying at the Kostas ....can't wait ...especially in this awful weather.
 :)

PS. when are you there?

When you are walking from Dora to the seafront turn right just before Sofia hotel and there is a SM on the left at the top of the hill. They have 1.5L. plastic bottles of red and white wine and raki which don't have professional type labels so are likely to be home-made or cottage industry produce. They may have the 5L. bottles as well.

I have generally found this to be the cheapest SM in Plakias although the one where Ali worked last year on the seafront seems to have the cheapest raki.

Yes I did. There is always a slight concern when you buy it that it might be water!

Thanks. When I said, by the barrell, I meant, on tap, if you like. Local, house wine. Clean, no additives, like the commercial wines. The wine and raki in plastic bottles will be what we're looking for. Thanks for the info on where to find these. Really love the rakomelo (honey raki)!

Do any of the supermarkets sell local feta, usually sold in a tub of liquid? Any loose olives?

Oooh good. I love good food and the Greeks know how to eat well without being pretentious about it.
