Plakias / Re: Still hoping to make it this year!

There is a solution.

Ferries are now operating form Piraeus (Athens' port) to Crete (Heraklion) although I think you'll need to go via the Cyclades.

I've always tried to avoid getting political on my site, so I just offer this as a travel option!

I'v been watching the Keep Talking Greece website for a few weeks now - thoroughly recommended for Greek news in English. Click https://www.keeptalkinggreece.com/

Here's their take on the opening up of flights - including items about both Heraklion and Chania

Fingers still crossed!

PlakChat / Sun warning
« on: June 30, 2020, 06:25:29 PM »
I've recently been receiving treatment at the excellent Dermatology Department of University Hospital Plymouth - better known as Derriford.

While chatting to a nurse specialist today, I mentioned Sunscreen, assuring her I always used factor 50. She then reminded me that almost all sunscreens have a shelf life - which she finds many patients are surprised by. She suggested I write the purchase date on any bottle as I buy it, and check it's not expired before use. She showed me several bottles which have a small picture on the rear label, usually with a little '12' inside a bottle. That's the shelf life -in months.

So before setting off to Plakias, check any lotions you pack!

Stay safe!

With 'Local Lock-downs' in the news, I think any problems we might have in getting to or from Plakias are more likely to be a reflection of the UK situation rather than hassles in Greece.

Plakias / Re: October ?
« on: June 30, 2020, 12:29:00 PM »
Having grown up near some of the best beaches in Cornwall, I've never bed a sun bed fan. I visited a few years ago in November, and really enjoyed using the beach with no beds in view.

I do feel Daniel's point on the risks is valid. A couple of years ago EasyJet cancelled our return flight a few hours before we were due to fly home. Inconvenient, but the Plakias locals helped us out - and I had three extra days in the sun.

I didn't make it to Plakias last year, so this time I'm just going to go for it, and hopefully handle any problems if/when they arise. To be honest, I think any hassles are more likely to be caused at the UK end rather than in Greece.

Plakias / Still hoping to make it this year!
« on: June 29, 2020, 03:17:52 PM »
Hi everyone. Is anyone else still hoping to make it to Plakias this year. I am! Currently booked for early September. We've booked EasyJet flights, so if they are forced to cancel we can use a voucher later - next year if necessary. Personally I'm happy to go in October if I must.

I see from 'Keep Talking Greece', flights will NOT be allowed from the UK until July 15th at the the earliest,

Article:https://www.keeptalkinggreece.com/2020/06/29/no-direct-flights-from-uk-sweden-to-greece-until-july-15/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+KeepTalkingGreece+%28Keep+Talking+Greece%29

We've booked accommodation on a 'no fee cancellation' basis, similar with car hire. Fingers firmly crossed!

That's certainly worth bearing in mind - still hoping to get there in September: fingers firmly crossed!

I certainly would be happy to visit later in the year if I can't get there in September. I've not heard anything about extending the season - but I guess this will be so dependant on the airlines. As I said in earlier posts, I've enjoyed a visit in November in the past, but it was a very different experience from a 'summer season' visit.
As for Taxis - I know several of the drivers live locally, so I expect that if the need is there, they will oblige.

I'm still hoping to get to Plakias this year. I had to stay home last year, so really need to get back to my favourite place. Keeping a careful eye on the news reports - and crossing my fingers!

Plakias / Re: Re Lance Chilton - HELP NEEDED
« on: January 08, 2019, 04:57:06 PM »
I had a really nice mail from Rutger:
  • Thank you very much! A mister going by the name Roger Foden, who occasionally reads the forum, saw your post.
He sent me an e-mail to a link to download a digital version.
I would like to thank you very much for your help. It really gives the project an enormous boost.
If there's anything I can do in return, just let me know
.
In acknowledging his reply, I said:
  • Many thanks for your reply. I am so glad one of the Plakias regulars was able to help!
Nothing is needed in return – just keep up the good work, and keep us informed of developments!
And many thanks from me to Roger!

Holiday Companies / Olympic discounts?
« on: January 06, 2019, 04:45:51 PM »
I must be on an Olympic mailing list somewhere.
Yesterday I received a mini-brochure regarding this years holidays.
There was a section offering the following discounts:

  • £80 off when you spend £800 - code SALE80
    £150 off when you spend £1250 - code SALE150
Solo travellers - £35 off your booking - code SOLO35

I have no idea if they are still current, but if you are about to make a booking, it might be worth trying one!
Please let us know if you do.

Plakias / Re Lance Chilton - HELP NEEDED
« on: January 03, 2019, 03:48:34 PM »
I'm hoping one of the long standing Plakias regulars can help with this request I received today.

  • First I'll explain a bit about myself. My name is Rutger Niemeijer, I'm a 22-year old student from the Netherlands.
For my studies, Ecology and Wildlife, I am doing an internship at Archipelagos, an organisation on the Greek island Samos.
With a few other people, I'm trying to make a list, or an index, of the plant species on the island. During our research we found a post you made in 2014 which said that Mr. Lance Chilton has sadly passed away. As you might know he once authored a book titled 'Plant list for Samos'. This work would be very useful to have for us. Since we couldn't find it online I was wondering if you perhaps know any place where we can find a digital version of the book, or if there is anyone on the island that we could borrow the work from.
My e-mail is rutgerniem@gmail.com, in case you want to answer this question.
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Yours sincerely,
    Rutger Niemeijer

It looks as if Rutger is engaged on some important work - could anyone help please?

Looks like just another government regulation to be widely ignored!  I love Greece!

Let us know how you get on Roger. It's certainly something I'd think about doing again.
