PlakChat / What's Plakias like in Febuary?
« on: December 04, 2016, 02:29:09 PM »
I have a few spare days in February and I'm looking at the possibilities of a trip to Plakias. I've not yet seen Crete in winter and would welcome any advice.....which restaurants are open , which accommodation is availabe, is it heated ect. I,'m quite happy to fly to Athens, then either plane or ferry to  Crete, and will probably use a hire car. Perhaps some of the expat community may be able to help. In advance..Thanks

Plakias / Major fire in Plakias
« on: May 10, 2015, 09:35:37 AM »
At 5.0am this morning,  a fire swept  through the beach side restaurants at plakias,  completely destroying them from Sofia to ostracio.  As far as I know  no one  was injured  fortunately.  A sad day for the town,  I  have many happy memories of eating there.  I hope there is sufficient time to rebuild before the peak of the season.

PlakChat / flights
« on: August 21, 2014, 02:19:19 PM »
Easyjet flights....just noticed, Easyjet are flying Gatwick to Heraklion throughout November, making the season longer. I wonder how much of Plakias knows this, and will stay open?  Also the flights seem reasonably priced

SDOE spots tourism tax dodgers

One in every two enterprises inspected across Greece by the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) over the June 21-24 long weekend was found to be withholding tax payments. Checks were conducted at tourism resorts around the country and violations were identified in 381 enterprises.

Inspectors performed 841 checks at destinations including Santorini, Paros, Antiparos, Myconos, Crete, Thasos, Corfu, Lesvos, Skyros, Halkidiki, Platamonas, Rhodes, Loutraki, Kyparissia, Kalamata, Parga, Skopelos, Skiathos and Pylos.

Almost half of all the businesses were found to be failing to issue receipts, not paying VAT to the state or being in violation of other tax regulations, with the violation rate amounting to 45.3 percent.

The highest rate of violations was identified at Pilio in central Greece, with eight out of every 10 entrepreneurs (83 percent) breaking the tax code. In Corfu the rate stood at 77.7 percent, on Paros at 61.9 percent, on Santorini and Evia at 60 percent, in the Peloponnese at 46 percent, on Myconos, Skiathos and Skopelos at 42 percent, on Rhodes at 36 percent, on Lesvos at 34 percent, in Halkidiki at 32 percent, at Parga at 30 percent and on Crete at 27 percent.

SDOE has drafted a strategic plan for the summer season, up to September 15, for the monitoring of all types of enterprises active in the tourism sector. It said in a statement that its aim is to beat tax evasion, to protect consumers from dangerous food and drinks, and to contain undeclared labor.

The Financial Crimes Squad will also try to put a stop to unfair competition and to identify luxury homes that are being leased illegally in expensive resorts on the pretext of hospitality.

PlakChat / Just returned,
« on: May 07, 2013, 09:15:05 PM »
Just returned from seven days in Plakias, some general comments and observations. Nothing changes much, the usual musical chairs over the winterwith shops and premises, and waiters. Not many of the actual workers are greek, in spite of the high unemployment, ? minimum wage!
Eating out seems to be slightly more expensive, but still good value. The best two meals were Apnoea and Minoiko, neither of which are mainstream , but good value, very 'Greek' and very good. Am I the only one on the forum who eats at Apnoea?
Sun loungers at far-end, not many, but loads at Bay of pigs. Nudism, most greeks couldn't care less nowadays. Anyone disputing that should remember that until recently, the largest shop in town displayed hard core porn at knee level. Sad that the bakery is closed, but I am told its only for a refit.
I've just had a week, booked at short notice, which was devoid of problems, inexpensive and enjoyable....what more can anybody want?
