Flooding
« on: February 25, 2019, 05:50:18 PM »
Just seen on Facebook videos of extreme flooding in Plakias. Main river seems to have overtopped the bridge.

This is  shocking & will require major work in some areas.
We hope everyone  living in & around Plakias are safe.

Also it seems the entrance to the gorge has been destroyed and massive repairs required

Yes - detailed photos and video on Facebook show total destruction of road at upper entrance to large gorge. I suspect the road via the smaller gorge may be or become passable. Chania recorded 7 inches of rain in 4 hour. Plakias weather station down at moment but there has been an inch of rain per day for quite some time.

Yes, Stick of Rock, it does work. How appalling. People in the Chania area have lost their lives, so sad. What chance have we against the elements.

Yes Yvonne ... and I can't help thinking of the poor animals who will have been swept away too.
Just think of those poor dogs who spend their whole lives on short chains with no chance of running away
Sorry!

Just checked out the facebook link, and Crete TV, all looks disastrous. The video of the Megalopotomas bridge on the way to Preveli shows how bad it ws. I can only imagine the beach at Preveli and the palms have been washed away, but let's hope not.
The pictures show the overflow onto the car park very well, now Sifi knows why he built the taverna a bit higher than others!
