Where to stay / Two-bedroom apartment

Thanks for the advice. Stayed at Calma appartments last week. Very nice: modern, spacious with 2 bedrooms as we wished and the best shower I have had in 27 years of going to Greece! Nice people too.

Plakias / Reporting In
« on: October 15, 2008, 04:22:51 PM »
Re Spinalonga.
In abt1982 I had a trip there with my parents and sister. For some reason we were mad enough to hire a very small boat with a small motor and just chugged across the sea. Except that the sea was very choppy away from land and my arthritic disabled sister had to lie flat in the bottom of the boat to feel safe. I just thought I was going to die.

Spinalonga was great and eerie seeing the skeletons in their graves.

Then we had to grit our teeth and chug back!!

Will be arriving in Crete on 26th Oct - can't wait - fingers crossed for benign weather gods.

Regards
Jane

Where to stay / Two-bedroom apartment

Returning to Plakias last week in October to experience what it's like end of season. Posted before trying to find a larger  apartment for 4 but all seem to have one bedroom and convertible bed in the living room rather than two bedrooms. This tends not to suit as unlike on work days at home I am up at the crack of dawn and would disturb our teenage kids who have discovered how to lie in. Any ideas? Also what can we expect in terms of weather, places being open etc? We have always been previously end of May/beginning of June. Thanks.

Thanks to all for comments.
As long as ferry is running as late as end Oct, we will probably use it.

Best wishes

Plakias / Ferries to/from Paleochora
« on: July 30, 2008, 12:57:37 PM »
Hello to all,
hope that someone can help.
We will be visiting Crete during last week in October. As well as our usual time in Plakias we plan to visit friends who are relocating to Paleochora. Is it at all possible in anyones experience to travel along the south coast between these 2 towns, even with a car and that late in the year?

Maps show those little dotted lines that indicate ferries, but we have never been aware of ferries coming that distance.

Another query - would you know if having hired a car for a week, a company would allow for one car being left in one town and another being picked up in a second town?

Thanks and best wishes

Gossip / How did you first find Plakias?

Try googling Pounda Beach which is west of PL. It had one taverna selling drinks and home cooking such as goat stew, with a donkey asleep on the beach in them old days 15 years ago.
Nice to hear that the little town remains quiet though.  Memories of a very serious (and well oiled) cricket match between Brits, Kiwis and Aussies. Not jumpers for goal posts, but beer crates for stumps.

Our favourite place was Piso Livadi in Paros, much smaller than Plakias, but when we considered going back a few years ago we discovered that the wonderful beach had been taken over by a development including massed discos and bungie jumping on the beach, As well as rows and rows of umbrellas.
Jane

Doesn't sound like Piso Livadi to me, I thought it was a quiet place with up-market restaurants etc. I've been into the little port several times on the Skopelitis Express on its way to the Small Cyclades, but it doesn't go to Piso Livadi any more.

Hi, we found Plakias about '88.

But was miffed/impressd to discover that my parents were in Plakias back in late 70s!

Have been very happy with Plakias ever since.

Hi,
I am catching up on developments as we start to plan our 08 holidays.

What is the comment about the harbour - is the old one being rebuilt or will there be a new one?

Thanks
Jane
Hi Jane

The old harbour is staying as is, and the new harbour is being built some way out of town on the road to Souda Beach.

Nothing to worry about!!

If you have a look on the map (Top right) it's marked where the new harbour is going to be.

Gossip / October Hols

Hello.

Please can those of you who have experience of Plakias in October give us some idea of how things are there.
We usually visit in May half-term hols and therefore had two weeks of unsettled wet weather last time. So we hope that in Oct half -term ie last week in the month, the sea will be warmer, the wind gently breezing and the sun comfortably warm - aah.
Any comments, plus is it quiter than May or similar.

Thanks

Jane

Where to stay / Larger studios/apartments
« on: March 26, 2006, 08:33:38 PM »
Decided to book 2 studios at Apollo, mainly to be able to have a pool for the kids to use. (Evening bar on site maybe handy too!) We will check out some of the other places for future reference though whilst we are there.

We are a family of 4 due to return to Plakias at the end of May (half-term) and still looking for the perfect place to stay. Kids are 10 and 12 years and don't fit small places easily. We have been looking for a good sized apt for 4, close to P centre and with a balcony with for that extra beer and a nice view after the kids have gone to bed. Oasis was OK with a pool, but too small and no view. We wonder if we would be better with 2 adjoining studios?
Does anyone have recommendations?
Nice to speak to you, have been guesting the forums for a few years!
