Shhhhh !
Don't tell anyone else ... they'll be all over us next year

Did a certain little dog have to be restrained ? :)

The certain little dog was still having his first breakfast at the Plakias Bay Hotel. He missed all the excitement !!

We have been coming to Plakias twice a year now, for the last 18 years. Two days ago we witnessed something that we have never see before. At 8.00 am on the sea shore at the far end we saw hatching sea turtles from the sand and then making their way to the sea. There were about 80 in total and the whole spectacle lasted for about an hour. A truly marvellous sight and something we will never forget.

Hi Jane

The sunbeds are in their usual position and the beach is looking exceptionally clean, thanks to Tollis.

The doughnut man is still making his regular daily visits.

Enjoy your holiday.

For those of you who cannot get enough of Plakias, you will be delighted to know that two webcams are up and running as from today. One pointing at the far-end and the other at the harbour.

It is certainly not taramasalata, it's a slightly darker and practically luminescent dark pink in colour. The taste is not particularly strong, and I couldn't quite recognise it. Just wondered if anyone else knew what it was.

We have eaten in the Medousa every night so far during our stay. In our view, the best food in Plakias. The "Pink" starter was puréed beetroot with yoghurt and olive oil.

We have been here for two weeks now and so far the Mont Preveli weather station has been entirely accurate in it's forecast. The weather is glorious as I write.

Plakias / Re: Sun Beds
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:02:55 PM »
Hi Mark

I am afraid that it is the same situation as last year, with the same number of sunbeds and parasols.
It was fine in May/June when we were there as Plakias was relatively quiet and therefore enough sunbeds for everyone.

We were there last September, and know exactly what you mean. We were on the beach for 7.30am otherwise all the beds had gone. In fact some mornings we arrived before the sun rose. We were moonbathing!!!!

I reckon it is going to be the same again this September as it is the high season.

It will not put us off though and we are counting the days till we arrive on the 28th August for four wonderful weeks.

Congratulations and many thanks to whomsoever has seen the necessity of restoring the far end beach parasols to their original decent distance apart today.

Whether it was tourist protests or just plain commonsence doesn't matter. It had to be done.

Those of you who wrote on the forum about there being more to Plakias than sun beds are quite right. But to me and many many more old people they are an essential requirement to enjoying Plakias when mobility is restricted.

Plakias / Holiday Report May 2011

An open letter to the Plakias authorities

"The joys of Plakias are being eroded by greedy commercialism. What was once a quaint Shangri-la of a village is turning ugly and one fears for it's future as a quiet escape option.

For instance, there is now, on the sea front, the architectural nightmare of a housing estate, so ghastly, that visitors call it Stalag 13.

This season there were no sun beds at the far end until the second week in June (normally in place the first week in May) while the new Mayor decided which highest bidder would be awarded the licence. The winner then installed 41 parasols to a regulation measurement space instruction, so tight that you can touch the naked body alongside you. - men a foot away from the nearest boobs, women face to face with men's essentials, smokers blowing clouds all around and everyone getting up at dawn to secure the outside units of bed-parasol to avoid claustrophobia.

It looks like a giant blue sardine tin with humans as fish - all in the name of 5 euros a throw.

Who is responsible for this disgusting obscene development? May God forgive him for his greed.

Tourists by the hundreds are making alternative arrangements for future holidays.

Plakias / Snakes
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:25:00 PM »
Two years ago, I saw a snake on the road outside a taverna in Plakias (true).  There was also a very very small man near the snake. (Not so true)

The taverna staff, seeing the situation, very quickly cleared both away.

That night's menu included snake and pygmy pie !!!

this little fella was having fun on the beach in 2006

We nicknamed the little fella "Fiddle". He had been abandoned but arrangements were made through the wonderful registered charity "Friends of Animals Rethymnon" to collect him and I am given to understand that he was re-homed and is now living in Germany.

Here he is on the same day that Chris took his photo, with his then best friend Bouzouki.

Here is a little video I made 2 weeks ago from the first floor of the Paligremnos looking towards Plakias.  It shows exactly where the present building work is taking place.
