Hi Harribobs,
You are correct this picture belongs to a serie of the WW2 German invasion of Crete: "Operation Mercury"
Most likely picture has been taken during this invasion period 20-05-1941 / 01-06-1941.

well, (not wishing to be picky....oh why not!! )
if it was taken by the Germans then it would have been after 1-6-41 ( sphakia was in allied hands until that time)
good picture though, the harbour has been improved greatly

Its Chora Sfakia, south west Crete, the place where the U.K. soldiers where pick up during the second world war. After ending your walk in the Samaria Gorge, leaving the ferry boat, you'll pass the memorial for this.
-
Yes, you're right Albert
the memorial is over on the left hand side (when you look out to the sea)

I've been though Chora Sfakion a few days, but can't understand how this picture can be the same place. Does anyone know where there is an up-to-date photograph on the web that shows the same area?
As an aside, there is a collection of similar photographs on the web taken on the island of Anafi in 1941. I have a photo that I took that is almost exactly the same view - this was taken before I knew about the 1941 photos.

The tree has grown a bit hasn't it! Looking at the pictures side by side it's interesting to note that at least one of the original buildings seems to have survived.

I really do not know. As you can see in the right top corner the picture is copied from the website Chora-Sfakion.com and is the opening window. As a Crete lover (who is not) and photographic enthusiast I am frequently exploring the photo-galleries of other enthusiasts and came across this picture.
