Title: Restaurants in Plakias
Post by: Noopsy on January 31, 2012, 12:16:04 PM
I've recently finished drawing up a list of restaurants which I've settled on when I visit Plakias.  It's not a comprehensive list of all restaurants there, and the comments I make focus on features that are of importance to me.  In short, I've produced it purely for my own benefit.  But others, particularly those new to the resort, may find it useful as a quick overview of what is available in the way of places to eat out.

I've eaten at Sophia regularly over several years and have never had a problem with the meat. However, I only eat what is on display in the window - that's one of the reasons I go there; I like to see what I'm going to eat before it's served.
I agree the service is friendly. In 2011 Babbis and George were working there, both having been at Gorgona previously. They're both great guys.

Restaurant reviews are very subjective but I certainly agree that Mousses is the cheapest of the tavernas in Plakias and whilst it might not be the best in terms of quality it is one of the best and the staff are very friendly.

Last year both Mousses and Sifis often brought raki in a jug rather than a single small glass.

My limited experience of Medousa is that Babis always brings a glass of tap water with your meal.

Thanks Noopsey thats really helpful and has whetted my appetite for September.

Which taverna sells the best stifado?

Unsure of the greek translation of some of the tavernas - is there any chance these could be added?

Best wishes Nora

Hi Nora,
The best stifado we have had was at Lysseos restaraunt just by the bridge. Always one of the first meals we have in Plakias.

I've eaten at Sophia regularly over several years and have never had a problem with the meat.
The reason why I've added a cautionary note (to myself, mind) was that in 2010 I ate there the night before I went back home.  The following day I suddenly had the most awful bout of diarrhoea on the plane (very inconvenient and very unpleasant), and an upset stomach for weeks afterwards.  So the prime suspect was the Sophia, though it could have been the Medousa where I had eaten the night before that.  Previously, I too had eaten at the Sophia many times without any ill effects, but you know the saying:  "Once bitten..."

These are the places where we have enjoyed eating out at on our trips to Plakias:

Medousa-always good value. Babis still present but takes more of a back seat these days and lets his son and daughter do most of the running around.
Antonis Place-Well worth a stroll along the bay to visit. Nikos the owner is a nice guy to deal with.
Kri-Kri-Farmers Pizza with Feta is fantastic.
Lysseos-Good food as well but the chicken curry is a hoot-it's curry but not as we know it Jim...
Tasomanolis-Always enjoy a meal here.
Sifis-Good value basic food and he has always put himself out to put together something for us when have arrived in Plakias at 1pm in the morning!
Corali-Good Value. Yannis the owner is a really nice guy to know.
Mouses-Wife likes it here, probably too much choice on the menu-I have a 'beef' about this.
Siroko-Had good experiences here.

There is a very good range of tavernas in Plakias, and despite several visits I haven't eaten in all of them.  Perhaps we will branch out this year. There are some we have eaten in but wouldn't go back to, but these are the same ones that others enjoy, and vice versa.

Noopsy mentions wheelchair access in some of the tavernas.  A word of caution on wheelchair access in Plakias - ramps can be as steep as around 1:3 (3 metres forward for every 1 metre up/down - good practice is 1:20) - some have a ramp made to the same steepness as the stairs.  Some ramps even have a step at the bottom. Several of the tavernas and bars have level access to the eating area.  Many tavernas have made no attempt at accessibility, so perhaps we should give 2 cheers to those that have at least tried.  The ramps are probably there for deliveries really, and the same goes for the ramps in some of the shops.  If you are going to give it a go, you and/or your pusher will have to have some muscles and probably a stiff drink to face some of the ramps.

I want to make a strong recommendation for the Vrisi tavern in Myrthios.  It is a beautiful building next to the restaured laundry place in Myrthios, nicely built with indoor and outdoor space and nicely decorated.  Beatuful view over the Plakias Bay during the day and at night.  Excellent food at prices equal to any other tavern in Plakias.  And of course with the wonderful service of Freddie who used to be the sunbed man at the Far End up until 2010.  A place not to miss on your next visit to Plakias.

Noopsy I'd very much like to read your list but because I am still happily using Word 2000 I can't open the file.  I've tried other methods to open it but without success.  Would it be possible to save it in a .doc format and post it again for me, and possibly others, still living in the dark ages?

Thanks very much if you can.

Thanks steven.  Downloaded  Word Viewer as you suggested but for some reason still didn't open the file.  After a bit more messing around I got hold of Open Office Writer that worked a treat.  Not sure what is going on there.

The info in the doc was interesting and will be useful (thanks Noopsy) but I would still like to find out if there are any 'traditional' Tavernas in Plakias.  By traditional I mean the evenings dishes are cooked during the day and then are 'on show' in the evening inside the taverna or even in the kitchen itself and you choose your mains by the age old pointing method.  Sometime the stuff hangs around for a day or two and other times its a case of 'when its gone its gone'.  Often it pays to be an early bird so to speak.

I must admit I much prefer this sort of place to that where you are making a choice 'unseen' from just a menu.  Any suggestions?

In connection with writing a few reviews for Tripadvisor, I've updated my list of restaurants in Plakias.  Again I stress that I've compiled it for my own use, and that, yes, it is therefore subjective.  I'm only posting it on the forum as a service to any newcomers to Plakias who might like to use it as a starting point when deciding where to go for their evening meal.  I do appreciate that those of us who know Plakias well have already got their own favourites and opinions on the eating places there, and will not necessarily agree with the comments I have made.

Thanks Noopsy, it's been a few years since we've been to Plakias so this will be handy, specially for the newer restaurants.

So far, we have had good meals at Gorgona, Harakas, Mouses, and Tasomanolis. Service at Sofia was very friendly, but the food was too salty for our liking.

I've attached the fourth edition of my list of restaurants in Plakias, mainly to take account of any price increases.

Noopsy, thanks for the newer list, it will come in handy this October for our only visit this year, but at least it's 10 days, more time to visit more tavernas! Can I ask if the prices have been updated from the earlier editions of your list? Especially bearing in mind the exchange rate, but we will not be restricting ourselves for the sake of a few euros, life is too short.

Yes, I've updated the prices too.  Bear in mind, though, that the prices I have shown are not average prices charged by that particular restaurant: where I have shown a high price it is because I had a more expensive dish on my visit e.g. fish.

Unfortunately there will be no update this year as I won't be going to Plakias.
