Plakias / The perfect picture from Plakias
« on: January 25, 2005, 10:59:03 AM »
Nice photos Paul !
Interesting to see the ones of the 'Dragon' as it looks very different from further up the road !!
Have started my first attempt at getting some photos loaded up on top the web -java script:ol('http://groups.msn.com/CretanLandscapes');
First attempt, as a real raw beginner on this type of thing.
How do you do it ? Do you need to get a load of web space ?
May be obvious, but interested to know.

Know I have mentioned before, but maybe another case of getting a library for this forum ???

Cheers all,

Neil

Gossip / Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL
« on: December 22, 2004, 01:31:53 PM »
As the title says, here's wishing everyone the compliments of the season, and may all your wishes be fulfilled.
Heading Crete way again next year but not sure if we'll pitch up in Plakias, may go somewhere different.
For no other reason than lots of the Island still to see, and why not.

Have a safe one, have a happy one and best regards to all.

Cheers

Where to eat...or not! / what still remains?& what's new?
« on: October 25, 2004, 01:06:32 PM »
For what its worth, I can honestly say I haven't had a duff meal in Plak since going. OK we haven't eaten - everywhere, but where we have eaten :-

Tassomanolis/Sirroco/Christos (stunning !!)/Sofia/Galini (Souda) and other names that I can't remember !

As I think I've said before, it may be easier to list the places NOT to go. As for prices, I thougt they were slightly down this year. For 6 of us with starters, mains and no holding back on beer/soft drinks and Wine, we were averaging 70-80 Euros (more if we went for fresh fish), not exactly over the top !!!
Mind you we are usually there in the height of the season so everywhere is open. Later in the year you 'may' be limited - don't know.

I've no complaints, and am always a happy chappy,

Cheers

Cheers Guys, something to think about for the next visit !!!

John, not sure if it was noticeable to you (I also drove the same route back to Plak) but that the road conditions changed considerably when exiting 'Sphakia Prefecture' and entering 'Rethymnon Prefecture' i.e lines on the roads, barriers on the bends etc.
Superb drive though with some stunning views of Plakias when on your on the 'Dragons Back'.

Pritch, how long to walk down the Imbros gorge for a fairly sedentary fifty something?
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=2439\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

John.
not being a walker myself (and closer to fifty than I care to think), I would say you are looking at a good days hike. Not sure though if its actually possible to walk the Gorge itself, think rather you walk down the road, but in all honesty, I don't know. You can get a taxi and or bus at the botom which will take you to the top, and then I guess you walk back down, must be something somewhere on the net though on whether you can walk it.
There are a couple of little stop offs on the way, and the 'Caravan' about halfway offers some stunning views and a chance for a frappe, though not sure you would get there if you were in the Gorge itself
We drove, and whilst fairly scary going up - there are certain parts just wide enough for 2 small cars, so its in the the lap of the Gods if you meet a dirty great truck at this point - when you get up to the top and onto the plateu there are some stunning little villages to mooch around.
As I mentioned, the WW2 Museum is an absolute MUST, quite something to see.
In August, when we went, the air was much cooler and fresher at the top, and we had a cracking lunch in a very quiete little Taverna overlooking a patchwork of fields and small villages - happy memories, and their 'Macaronia Tyri' was one of the best I've tasted.
Worth a day out if youve a car though.

Reading all the various reports over the weeks/months especially those on places to eat, what has tsruck me is I can't remember a post saying 'don't eat at........'.

Think that says it all doesn't it.......

And yes the restaurant with the 'wheel' outside is 'Tasso Manolis' but the wheel is from Tasso's first boat (his new one is the yellow one at the end of the boats on the harbour). Tasso gets most of the fish himself for sale in the restaurant. My wife reckons (more an arni eater me) that they are always fantastic, and always has a plate of 'mixed fishes' i.e. whatever has been caught, and not stupidly priced either !!

Cicade's - could listen to them all night !!!

Haven't eaten in Lysseos, haven't quite worked our way that far down the Town yet, keep getting stuck in the ones we know, but hey, can't be bad.

Think the Taverna you mention at Soudha is 'Gallini' - one of my most favourite places to be in the World (just wish the seats were a tad wider - but then I'd probably only spend longer there - shame !

Indeed, there is much good to say about Plakias, and everyone see's a different bit of it I guess dependant on where they are staying, which makes life all the more richer.

Enjoy,

Pritch

As I type this now back home in the UK, most of you will be out there and I hope your having as good a time as we did !! Finally got to see Ali & Dave which was great to put some faces to names - and what a lovely couple, long may you enjoy !!
I know I said I would probably do some on the spot reporting, but as we (were) in the middle of selling our house, my email time was restricted to sorting that out so sorry no reports !! Though it was nice sitting in Ostraco checking emails, and of course havingto have the odd Mythos whilst waiting, much nicer ambience than my study I can tell you !!
Weather was superb, breezy rather than blowing a hooly as slept out on the balcony every night under the stars...marvellous.
Can anyone tell me why there seems to be a weird almost water/oil type tinge to the beach at Lefgoya ? Don't experience it at any of the other beaches - is it to do with the fresh water running into the sea ????
Some new shops we noticed this year, which my daughter was drawn to like a magnet and a good few Euros were separated from us....
Noticed also that the prices were if anything, slighlty down on last year, but fortunately nothing much has radically changed.
We had our second week further towards Chora Sphakion, total contrast, very very quiete, few Tavernas, but got some great sightseeing in - anyone done the Imbros Gorge ??? If you haven't, whilst not for the faint hearted I can give you some absolutely fantastic places to go and see.
Anyone been to the WW2 Museum at the top of the Gorge, stunning and very moving, but don't overdo Giorgos's hospitality, his Raki is a killer !!!
This years holiday was as good as the last 3 we have been and fortunately Crete (apart from Iraklion) was not overly hit by Olympic fever, certainly not where we went.
Talk soon,

Pritch

Plakias / Crowded Plakias?
« on: August 16, 2004, 12:57:08 PM »
Regrettably will have left Plak by the 31st, but will be in Heraklion, so all plse enjoy. Will be back in the Sofia for a meal definately as we had great food in there last year.
Mind you, with all the good eating places around do not have enough nights to eat at each one.
Keep saying we'll try somehwere different, but difficult when you know what your getting and where you are going, and simply not going to get stressed about choice of eating place - not on hols.
Have a great night night though and wish everyone well.

Cheers

Its nearly time to set the alarm for an ungodly hour Tuesday morning to head out to the airport, get on that plane (please be on time.....) and head out for Plak.
Can't wait, as within 24hrs a cold Mythos or few will be welcoming yet another few days in that wonderfull Town.
Will probably post a message from the Forum after one of their indulgent breakfasts with an 'on the spot report'.
Lets hope the forecasted storms have passed through by the time we get there and the wind isn't too strong !!!
For all those yet to travel - have a good one, me, I can't wait to get there to let the Plakian ambience restore the soul, as it has a wonderful habit of doing.
Looking forward to seeing our good friends again, as its been far too long.

Catch you later guys.......................

Hello there guys,
Just thinking about one of  my favourite celebrations in Greece; the Assumption of the Virgin Mary   (  or Panagia in Greek )  is there still a celebration held in Plakias on August 15th?
                                    Fraoula
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=2009\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Fraoula,
we have been in Plakias the last two years over this period, admit have not seen any specific celebrations, though one or two of the Tavernas have laid on some live music. Also noticed that the menu boards tend to revert to Greek, over this period as not surpsisingly a lot of locals are in Town - which is nice.
Know that Taverna Galini (Souda Bay) usually has a Bouzouki player in for the night, though we've never been able to get a table.
Won't be there this time this year as were not going out till the 17th - can't wait !!!

Cheers
