Plakias / Timeos Stavros
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:20:10 PM »
Mike, my memory's not so good and we aren't the best at finding or keeping to paths but I do remember that we started at the path behind the Plakias Bay hotel that gets you to the top of the cliff, then walked round the headland some way. There were two opportunities to climb. I think walking further round got to the easier route where, looking up you could see a saddle. No path as such but easy enough climbing to the top of the saddle, then left following the ridge to the peak.

Oh no, there's not another way up it? Is it easier than the zig zag way? Not that i will climb it again!

Barny.
Nothing easier than the zig-zag path Barny (not sure whether that's good news for you or not  )
If you don't fancy Timeos Stavros again, how about Kaka Mouri (above the cliff at the far end). Great views of the bay.

Quite right George, get the priorities right.

Babbis is great and trips to Medousa are a highlight but I have seen him quite stroppy on occasions, but hey they don't call me stroppy ploppy for nothing.
I'd probably be stroppy sometimes if I had to serve us lot day in day out.
Staying off topic (sorry) - We usually have at least one meal at Medousa but have never built up a rapport with Babbis - maybe we go there too early before he's started winding down.

When I first climbed it about 5 years ago I went up the "western", poorly defined path to the top which starts (as described in Lance Chilton's Plakias walks book- 2003 edition) at a point overlooked by a small chapel on a hillock to the west. The last two times I went up I used the well defined, initially ziz-zag, track that starts from the south side of the mountain, overlooking the Libyan sea. Last year I couldn't find the "western" path although as I was on my way home and pretty tired I didn't really search for it.

Could anyone who has climbed Timeos Stavros this year advise if this path is still in existence or whether it has become too overgrown to be useable.

Mike
Not this year, but when we first climbed it in 2007, we managed to follow the western path briefly (going down) but then lost it. In 2008 we struggled to make out any of the path; certainly not well enough for us to follow.

Although not liking the beach, the palms were a joy to walk through. As they were so established, I imagine it will take many years to return to something like it was. Very sad.

Enjoyed Angels and Demons, and pretty much all of Terry Brooks's stuff. The Island was a great read - made a visit to Spinalonga a must.
Oops
I've got my authors confused. Angels and Demons sounds like a Terry brooks book, but of course was Dan Brown. I liked The Davinci Code very much; less so, Angels and Demons, and but was put off Dan
Brown completely when I read The Digital Fortress which I thought was too predictable.

Spottttt - My (and several others') understanding is that the end 'shower' is allowed to run continuosly so that the water in the pipe doesn't get scaldingly hot. Maybe not a strong arguement at the moment but makes sense in the height of summer.

C&S - definitely checking out the info on moneysavingexpert.com, as jann says. Nationwide and Santander Zero debit cards have no charge, and, just as importantly, give you a good exchange rate; better than you'd get exchanging money. Even if the ATMs play up, you can always use them in the restaurants (we avoid this if poss. though, so the locals don't have to pay the bank's commission)

Thanks for that. Fingers crossed for him. I guess the road to recovery will be long.

I spoke to Marcus Last night he said his Dad is OK now.......Alex

Excellent news and quite remarkable, remembering how ill he was last September. We may struggle to make it this year as our 3 week C. American holiday got extended to a just over a month. Back to work tomorrow and will find out how it's affected my holiday allowance
