This article and photograph I found in the 'Rethymnon bugle'

Good News From Preveli!
On August 22nd last year a devastating wild fire caused an immense amount of damage to the South Coast of Crete. At the time it was estimated that about 70% of the ‘wild palm’ forest at Preveli had been destroyed (on the left you can see a photo that was taken shortly after the fire). However, it would appear to be the case that Cretan Palms are really tough cookies. Roving reporters Derek and Gill (thank you both!) recently made an exploratory visit to Preveli, and from one of the photos that they took (this one seen here to the right) it can be seen that despite being scorched the palm trees are already demonstrating abundant new growth. Brilliant!

We have one in our garden and Decembers harsh frosts seem to have killed it.

Thank you for posting this! I hope they will give the forest time to heal before the  masstourism will be allowed to trample down the fresh green...

cheers!

Revived the palm Preveli who was hit by fire on August 22, 2010. According to an announcement of YPEKA, recent observations in the palm revealed the complete regeneration of the rare ecosystem and the greening of the area.

As noted, all palm trees (a species with the Phoenix theophrastii) Revegetation, seeds that had fallen to earth, grew and developed normally small palm. Similarly regeneration and other forms that complement the ecosystem, carob, mastic trees, trees and trees.

Further initiatives of services YPEKA and decentralized administration of Crete, aimed at protecting and restoring the natural ecosystem are as follows:

1. Declaration as reforestation of burnt forests (GG D: 495/22-9-10 & 737/31-12-2010)

2. Adopted Forest Prohibited (ban grazing in the area, etc.)

3. Daily storage - information from the staff of the Division of Forestry oversaw the Rethymnon area (especially during the period August-November).

4. Perimeter fencing of the central part of the habitat. This work was funded by the YPEKA.

In its YPEKA also noted that the importance of processes of natural regeneration in the region emerged through these actions carried out by the Forestry Department of Rethymnon and focused on protecting natural Revegetation by removing the pressure from grazing and trampling. The services of YPEKA in collaboration with the decentralized administration of Crete will continue to manage the area always aiming to protect the rich biodiversity.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the area is charmed, in the prefecture of Rethymno, included in the network Natura 2000 (GR-4330003) and are classified as archaeological and historical site and a place of natural beauty.
