Plakias / Get your ar*ses down to Plakias
« on: July 16, 2015, 06:05:35 PM »
Probably preaching to the converted here, but if anybody who reads this who is procrastinating over whether to go to Plakias or not over the summer, please go and show your support!

We have just arrived (July 15th) and many of the local businesses are finding it very tough going.

The numbers appear well down on what we experienced at the same time last year.

The restaurant businesses affected by the fire in May also get hit by the double whammy of not being able to serve to outside tables when the infamous Plakias wind blows, and it has been doing so since July 8th (8 days) with the winds forecast to carry on for at least another week

The plan is for the installation of 1.8m (?) glass/perspex windbreakers to surround the affected area, but no covered spaces will be allowed in future. Due to financial restrictions this won't happen until at least 2016.

Gossip / What happens after July 1st?
« on: June 15, 2015, 09:19:34 PM »
With the financial situation in Greece deteriorating by the day, and with no sign of an agreement between the state and it's creditors before the end of June, it is starting to look desperate.

Thursday 18th June looks like a crunch day, if no agreement is reached, then the ECB, IMF and other creditors will then start fully preparing for the effects of a Greek default.

Assuming that the current stalemate remains unbroken, it is really unclear about what happens if Greece does default.

There are public sector salaries to be paid at the end of the month (emergency services, civil aviation authorities, local authorities etc.).

If the bailout credit facility is withdrawn (and the probability it seems at the moment looks high), then the credit lines currently available from the ECB to keep the Greek banking system going dries up instantly.

The Greek banks also have outstanding loans to prop up the state and with their liquidity disappearing overnight, within a short space of time, drastic measures may have to be imposed to prevent a run on their assets as depositors try desperately to withdraw their savings

To avoid this the banks may prevent access to their accounts and the value of any savings will plummet (especially if a new currency or a parallel system to the euro is adopted).

Alternatively if controls are similar to those applied in recent years in Cyprus, many depositors with significant savings may find that these are virtually wiped out overnight.

There is also the issue of how essential services are maintained. Law and order, hospitals, energy provision.

The least of their worries but still a big driver to the Greek economy is tourism and if there is no air traffic control (salaries remain unpaid), you have no flights into the mainland or the islands.

I desperately hope that this doomsday scenario doesn't happen, but they will be in unchartered waters with no president, who knows what happens next?

PlakChat / A very wet start to the year?
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:36:41 PM »
Assuming that the data supplied on the meteo website by medousa is accurate, in the first seven weeks Plakias has seen more rain (644mm) than in the whole of 2014!

2014 was overall it appears was also a much wetter year for this area than in previous years.

If the data is 100%, then this is wetter than what we have witnessed in the UK.

My home location of Coventry had around 60-70mm of rain in both December 2014 and Jan 2015 (120mm approx), compared to the figures of around 700mm for Plakias for the same period!

Do these figures stack up with what has actually happened?

Plakias / A shout out to apostolis
« on: July 31, 2013, 12:46:16 PM »
Some of you may have seen the man responsible for the upkeep of the far end post 'freddie'.

Suffice to say that apostolis is a very softly spoken man who is very respectful of the beach and looks after it well, constantly picking up litter.

I in a small way have tried to help over the last few years by removing litter and larger 'non-marine' debris from around the rocks.

The sea is beautiful and cleaner than i can ever recall in the last ten years of my visits and this i believe is down to him and whoever helps him.

I hope you appreciate his input and help to maintain the state of the beach throughout the summer and going forward.

Plakias / Plakias weather july
« on: July 23, 2013, 09:42:24 PM »
Having spent almost seven days here, Plakias is fantastic as ever.

This year we have come one week earlier than usual.

One comment is that the weather is a lot cooler than last year.

I don't think the earlier start makes much difference. The wind has been constant since we have been here but the days are not as hot as in previous years, maybe down by 3-4 degrees.

You certainly feel it in the evenings. We were in Gioma taverna last night and several people were wearing coats because of the cool evening temperatures.

Holiday Companies / Taxi share in August 2010?
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:22:23 PM »
We have booked our perennial Crete flight this year from Manchester on August 17th 2010, so we land at Heraklion in the evening.

Our return flight to Manchester is the night of August 31st 2010.

We normally book a return taxi ride from the airport to Plakias.

If by some stroke of luck there is anybody that would like to share the costs of the taxi with us as a couple, either there and or back, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Plakias / Lefteris-The Doughnut man is back!
« on: August 14, 2009, 01:40:26 PM »
After a couple of years without his absence due to ill-health, we were surprised to see him back selling his famous doughnuts.

He told us that this year may be his last as he is hoping to renovate/build a small house in Plakias (near the Youth Hostel), where he also hopes to have a few tables for friends, to sell coffee, drinks, specialist treats and snacks. So we wish him well and hope that he manages to realise his dream.

PlakChat / Jewellers in Plakias and Myrthios
« on: November 22, 2007, 01:03:41 AM »
Hi Everyone,

As we are getting married in July 2008, with our honeymoon in Plakias (fourth time in a row), we are looking at contacting the local jewellery stores with a view to getting wedding rings made when we get there.

This year, we brought a very nice engagement ring from the one of the main jewellers in plakias (close to Ostraco's) and have lost their details as we hope to approach them again to see if they can make a ring to order or adapt an existing design.

Reading the forum in the past, I also recall that one or two forum members had used a jeweller in Myrthios to make a wedding ring for them and I was wondering if they had their details as well.

I hope that someone can help.

Regards,

Steve & Dawn

PlakChat / Ostraco's-What will they be playing this year?
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:18:00 PM »
During our visits to Plakias, we always like to spend our evenings upstairs at Ostraco's overlooking the main street and the bay.

However it always manages to give us a chuckle because we can always predict what songs will be played. There are always the perenial favourites but in 2006 we noticed some new additions. This is the list of the ones that we remembered good or bad and in no particular order....

REM-Losing my Religion
Mick Hucknall/Simply Red-Fake
Jamiroquai-Virtual Reality
Bon Jovi-Living on a prayer
Bon Jovi-It's my life
Bon Jovi-Always
Nickelback-How you remind me
Shakira/Wyclef Jean-My Hips don't lie
Santana-Smooth
Madonna-Hung Up
Red Hot Chilli Peppers-California Dani
Red Hot Chilli Peppers-By the way
Red Hot Chilli Peppers-Road Trippin'
Foo Fighters-Best of you
Aerosmith/Run DMC-Walk this way
Anastacia-Left outside alone
Robbie Williams-Rock DJ
Robbie Williams-Rudebox
U2-Beautiful Day
U2-Street with no name
Dandy Walhols-Bohemian Like me
Queen-I want to break free
Beyonce-Deja Vu
Natalie Imbruglia-Torn
Men at Work-Down Under
Kylie Minogue-Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
Pink-Just like a Pill
Michael Jackson-they don't really care about us
Stereo MC's-Connected

Feel free to add any other popular requests that I have missed out.

I have a feeling that SexyBack by Justin Trousersnake will be irritating popular in 2007...

Perhaps people might like to add some other songs that they would like to be heard/viewed and we could email the guys at Ostracos with a list-they may even play some of them!

Plakias / ATM next to Municipality of Finikas Office-Problems
« on: August 25, 2006, 07:03:18 PM »
As a follow up to the post that Mandy Harrison made several months ago about problems withdrawing money, I recently had a problem (August 7th) with the above ATM because I tried to withdraw money from this machine and nothing came out (money or receipt) and when I got home I found that my account had been charged.

Fortunately my bank has credited the amount, but maybe some of you that are due for your annual pilgrimage in september should be aware. No problems with the other three ATM's along the strip though.

Where to stay / Anna's Apartments-Plakias
« on: January 05, 2006, 12:11:56 AM »
We have booked our flights for July/August 2006 and we are definitely going back to Plakias (Barring unforseen circumstances)!

We are considering Anna's Apartments in Plakias itself. This is not to be confused with Anna's apartments in Mirthios. Their website looks good with seemingly some excellent endorsements from people who have stayed there.

Has anybody been there? If so would you be so kind as to post your comments?

Where to stay / Anna's Apartments-Mirthios
« on: May 08, 2005, 12:36:03 AM »
We have booked two weeks during the end of July and beginning of August 2005 at Anna's Apartments in Mirthios. Has anybody been there before?

I know that the village is not strictly in Plakias, but as it's our first trip to crete we intend to hire a car and at least spend some time travelling as well enjoy the delights of Plakias itself.

We meticulously researched the islands resorts beforehand and felt that Plakias offered something different and hope that we are not proved wrong.
