Enjoy.

Thanks Bob. Some great photos - the underwater ones were very clear - Mikro AMoudi?

Yes. Mikro Amoudi.
I hope to get more underwater photos when I return to Plakias this week.
I used a compact Kodak camera that uses a thick plastic case good for five meters depth.
On my next trip, I hope to use a dedicated underwater camera if I can find one at the dive shop that will rent one to me.

Back from Plakias, more pictures have been posted and more to come. http://notalus.spaces.live.com/
Sadly, this may well be the last time I will go to Plakias as I have caught the diving bug.
More accessible diving sites are closer to me in the America's than are offered to me in Europe (close to my wife's family), let alone Crete.
I will miss Crete, it's picturesque landscape, warm people (love the raki at the end of your meal), spectacular beaches and all around cheerful laid back atmosphere. Hope I can live vicariously through the stories and pictures people post on this forum until another day when my travels land me in the south of Crete.

Plakias / Where do you sunbathe?

I don't understand that, why? when there is a perfectly good clean beach with facilities, in Plakias, either Far End or otherwise, some people still prefer to travel long distances to more secluded beaches with little or no ameanities.

Let's have some good reasons why these places are chosen as an alternative to probably (in my opinion) the best beach (Far End) for miles.

Micro Amoudi offers good snorkeling around the many surrounding rocks. The sandy bottom beyond the Micro Amoudi beach is usually clear of any grassy debris and the water deepens quickly.

I manage to get a few pictures of the fish among the beautiful rocky walls that cup Micro Amoudi.
You can view the pictures here http://notalus.spaces.live.com/.

Plakias / Where do you sunbathe?

I believe I voted for Plakias far end beach, but on my visit from this month I spent most of my time on Micro Amoudi.

Attached (if I have done it correctly) is a picture from Micro Amoudi from the 13th of July when the waves could easily drown children.

Plakias / Diving in Plakias
« on: July 15, 2007, 05:52:00 PM »
I have just arrive back from Plakias today.

I wanted to give an update to this thread.

Instead of diving with the Dutch team at Dive Together, I instead decided to dive with the crew at Kalypso.

http://www.kalypsodivingcenter.com/eng/courses.htm

I was less than impressed with the attention to safety.
It was shocking to me given my instructor on my Check Out dive in the Bahamas who paid
particular attention to this important detail in my training.

I suppose they expect you should be responsible for your own equipment (even if it is a rental)
and your own safety.

However, even while on the second dive I didn't feel as secure as our dive master lead the way but did
little to communicate or check our condition.

Beware.

Plakias / Diving in Plakias

Hello everyone. Well, we've done it. We have booked our first holiday to Plakias! We will be staying the first 2 weeks of July. My husband used to be a keen diver. He hasn't done much in the last few years, because of back problems and lack of time. He has turned to cycling instead. However, he would like to dive again this summer. Also, our teenage kids would like to have a go at diving. Does anyone have any experience with the dive centre in Plakias ?

Last year I was planning on diving with the Dutch Dive school but I didn't want to take the time to learn it during my vacation in Plakias.

This year, I plan on diving with them in the second week of July.

One thing I learned on my first trip to Plakias last year, is that the Dutch Dive school are shore divers.
I have only dived a few times off of a boat in the Bahamas where I became a certified Open Water diver, so I am looking forward to this new adventure.

I'm excited and eager to see if the beauty of Plakias above water is matched under water.

Where to go / Waterfalls
« on: June 21, 2007, 04:40:50 AM »
I'm interested in going to this waterfall, what is the best footwear for this hike?

I was thinking water shoes, am I overly concern about this? Are sandles a good choice?

PlakChat / Beer, Beer we want more beer
« on: June 15, 2007, 03:23:57 AM »
I had a beer called Zorba during my first adventure in Plakias. Interesting.
But, here in the States I will usually settle on a Samuel Adams (Boston, MA, USA), Corona (Mexico) or if I'm in a good mood and it is being sold by the glass Bass Ale (one of my favorites).
My vote is cast for Mythos.

Where to stay / Alianthos Beach Hotel

Can anyone tell me something about this hotel ?
Thanks

I stayed there with my wife last year and I will be there again this year. Service is excellent, always feel warmly welcomed and the location is convenient.
The rooms are spartan, beds are not the most comfortable. Renting and returning your moped or car can all be managed at the front desk.
Overall a great place to stay.
