Pics from the in-laws, these are evidently from 1991, but I have a feeling they might be earlier:

The Forum without a palm tree??

Very interesting, George. Thanks for posting them.

I am not convinced they were taken at the same time - if you look closely there's some orange rope at the bottom of the first picture that is not there on the second. Also, there's some water that doesn't match up, and I think the boat is higher up in the second picture.

The 2nd pic is definitely after my 1990 pic as the sea wall is finished, so it could well be 1991. This pic solves a puzzle for me. In my pic there looks to be a building under constrcution beyond the Livikon, which I thought was the Forum. But I don't remember the Forum shop not being there. Your pic shows the Forum shop open but the 2nd storeys on this building and the one next to it are empty. There used to be a lot of buildings like this in Greece, many of them just concrete pillars, floors and staircases.

The 1st pic could be older, or maybe this part of the sea wall was not built at the same time. I don't think is much older, though. The yellow hut opposite the souvlaki bar was the post office. It all looks pretty scruffy compared to nowadays.

Hi George

I cannot take credit for the photo as it was taken by friends who have recently jouned the forum.......but I will find out.  I understand though that it was taken in the 1960's

Yes, this is a good one. When I have more time I'm going to enjoy comparing this with more recent photos and google earth to see what I can locate.

Well I've had a go at this, but it's an almost impossible task as I can't find many pointers. You can't see the stream, so cannot locate the position of the bridge, and it looks as though the road out of the village has been straightened out from the original track so you can't identify the line of it.

I think that the road where the chip shop, post office etc now is runs between the leftmost two buildings that you can see on the front on the photograph. The leftmost building is probably the old building that is still there today and doesn't appear to be used for anything. After that there is probably the Lamon hotel, or part of it, Flisvos Rooms and somehwere there is probably the Alianthos Pension (if you look at the 1980s photos on www.plakias.co.uk, Lance Chilton mentions this and I think it forms the seaward bit of the present buildings).

I don't know what the buildings are in the foreground, but the harbour looks to be a hive of activity.

If you can do any better than that, let me know.  Hopper might be able to help us.

I asked Denis of Livicon and I've forgotten what he said. I do remember it being much later than I would have thought and queried his answer (nothing like arguing with the locals !!). As a result of this "argument" I can't remember now what we were arguing about !! I think he said about 1980 but I thought earlier. Obviously after Livicon was built if anyone knows that date !!

Looking at the picture I would say around 1980 as we have some friends who's first visit was 1981 & the way the describe it looks simular to the picture. I can't remember exactly when the Livicon was built but in the 60's sometime 69 rings a bell. Stelios (god bless him) did tell me but that was years ago & my memory doesn't always work so well. Will find out for sure
& let you know.

John,

Another very interesting photograph. If you compare it with Lance Chilton's 1982 photos and his description, there's not a lot of difference, so 1980 is probably about right.

What baffles me now is that is very difficult to reconcile anything on this photo with boxerlover's 1960s shot, so I don't think my identification of anything on that one is correct now. In fact, are we sure that that is Plakias at all?

I am absolutely certain that photo from Boxerlover is Plakias. I have printed it out and stared a lot at it. I understand that Livicon was the first (modern ??) building in Plakias (??) and wonder if the nearest building along the beach on that photo is Livicon or Livicon under construction.

Anything is possible as it's Greece! If it is Plakias, then I think all the buildings on that photo (Boxerlover's) are between the travel agency in front of the pharmacy, and the Alianthos. A lot must then have been pulled down or changed their shape a lot before 1980. If the Livicon was there, it's possible that it was off the photo to the left.

Another historical fact: I was once told that the ground floor of the Livicon was originally the general store. The first few times I went to Plakias, this was a self-service cafe: I like to go there for breakfast, probably because getting served and trying to pay the bill was very slow everywhere else. The Livicon also sold bus tickets - there was a sign at the bus stop that read something like "Get your tickets before you get in the bus", pointing at the Livicon.

This is my first attempt at attaching anything...fingers crossed...here goes...

[attachment=485:IMG.jpg]

That was a nerve-wracking experience!

Copies of the above photo (pity it's come out so small) were handed out at this year's Festival of the Sea in Plakias.  Is this the oldest image of the village we have on the forum?

Noopsy,

It definitely is. I might even be the oldest photograph of the village that there is anywhere. What surprises me is that there are any buildings at all behind the beach. I would have thought that in those days the only buildings would be at the port which I thought was the oldest part. There must have been two parts to the village for a long time - the bit around the port and then the bit around where the Livikon and Alianthos now are.
