Advice re: resorts like Plakias on Rhodes
« on: January 16, 2012, 11:37:31 AM »
Hi,
we are frequent travellers to Plakias but this year have decided to have a change. We have booked some flights to Rhodes with the aim of spending a week in Tilos and the 2nd week in Rhodes. I am having difficulty finding a resort I like the look of in Rhodes.
Have any of the Plakias regulars been to Rhodes and could recommend a resort similar to Plakias?
I've looked at Pefkos, Kremasti & Tholos so far.

Many thanks

I have a friend who goes a lot to Afandou, and she also loves Plakias. I haven't been myself, but it may be worth checking it out  ;)

Hi Joe and Tony,

We went to Haraki in May 2011.  It is a very small place - one street, several tavernas and a few bars.  The road is behind the accommodation and the sea-front is a promenade - no traffic.  It has a pebbly/stony town beach and a very long, pebbly beach to the south, which goes all the way round to Lindos, with very little in between.  If you are a far ender, it is possible to be naturist on the long beach, but you need to be discreet (and there is nowhere to hide).  We found the food generally uninspiring and expensive, but other people we spoke to enjoyed the food and the ambience.  They do marvellous gyros pitta at Bottoms Up.  I understand it gets very busy with Greek visitors in the summer and families come down from the villages around, so it may have a very different atmosphere then.  It has its own medieval castle ruins to climb up to, and a sandy bay (reportedly the best beach in Rhodes), on the other side of the castle.  There is also a lovely view of Lindos several kilometers away at the other end of the bay, looking very romantic floodlit at night.  It all sounds right, and we enjoyed it, but we won't be going back.  It may not have helped that we had thunderstorms for 4 out of 7 days, and the weather was glorious at home.  It has its own forum and lots of return visitors, so judge for yourself, or at least call in to visit when you are in Rhodes.

Olympic is the only UK company (and possibly the only company) that goes to Haraki, so it is not overrun by British visitors.  However, there are plenty of rooms you can book directly, as you already have your flight organised.

I understand that the south of the island is pretty unspoilt and off the tourist track, but we did not get there.

I say this not to discourage you, but to give you one person's view.

I hope you find what you want and enjoy yourselves.

IMHO, there are no resorts on Rhodes that would appeal to those who love Plakias. Shame, as the weather is so good.

Thanks for all your replies.
Arnaki, thanks for the heads up on Haraki. It was one we were considering, but found it difficult to find independent accomodation. Don't fancy it anyway now I've read your review!
We did also look at Afandou, but it seems that the town/accomodation is quite far from the beach.

I have been on the Rhodes forums and will keep looking.

Many thanks

Oh dear, now I feel guilty having put you off!  It is nice enough but it isn't Plakias -

You can find accommodation on here if all else fails -

Good luck!

As a Plakias regular who ended up on Rhodos last year, I would recommend Stegna where we spent 10 days. Quiet village, good restaurants, OK beach. I visited Haraki once, looked nice and quiet (october).
Of course it must be said, it still ain't Plakias...  :)

Have had a couple of holidays in Rhodes.  Stayed in Haraki the first time - not nice.  Noisy accommodation over bar etc.
Stayed in Pefkos last year - much nicer with great selection of eateries for the evening.  Hired a car for the duration and
travelled down south and also along the west coast.  Plenty of secluded beaches (some of the beaten track) and often
had beach to ourselves.  The west coast can get very windy and the sea is then rough.  If peace and quite is what you
want that's the place to be.
