Plakias / Re: Sofia hotel 2016
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:51:27 AM »
I second that.
Just booked my transfer for July with Zacharias (taxi4you.gr).
And if you book trip and return together, you get a discount.

Best Regards,

XXXX: can't remember name, but hidden behind Alianthos Beach Hotel and worth mentioning; facing away from beach by mini-roundabout, hotel on left, walk past hotel, follow road round to left, taverna on right. Really nice people, lovely food/surroundings. Again, try your Greek here.
I reckon that's Manoussos (next to Medousa)

I didn't realise there were any snakes on Crete.
There are some, but you hardly ever see them.
They're very shy for fear of being run over by a pick-up truck (see thread from a few years back).

Moundros to Nisi (deserted village)
This one is doable with a motorbike, too (and then on to Kastelos IIRC). Very nice!
Nisi has indeed been deserted by people, but it's inhabited by (quite nosey) goats ;-)

Where to go / Resorts similar to Plakias

I am an avid Plakias fan, too, and my #2 is Lendas.
It's a lot smaller and quite quiet, but less windy.
Weather-wise it's quite a sweet spot where you can find acceptable weather even if most of Crete is experiencing bad weather conditions.
The tap water there is drinkable (like in Plakias).
Downside: It's quite remote.
As of my last stay there in October 2006, the next gas station is  30 km away (across the Asterousia mountains) and the next cash dispenser is even further away (in Mires). (Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm always pleased to find closer cash dispensers.)

Just my €0.02

Plakias / Decent road map
« on: July 05, 2009, 11:29:02 PM »
Καλισπέρα σας!

I don't know if this thread is still active and if it still makes sense to reply, but I wanted to add my €0.02 on the road map issue.
I have long struggled with several road maps (Harms ic, Road editions), but as soon as I was trying to navigate on gravel roads, I got lost because not all intersections were marked and the course of the road was not even close to accurate.
However, earlier this year I have found a reference to the Road & Touring Atlas Crete by Anavasi (could have been in this forum, but I'm not sure), have ordered it and it looks pretty useful. It's 1:50000.
I have checked some routes in Google Earth and the course of the roads I checked really matches.
I think it's good value for €18, and €6 shipping is OK (considering there were €7.5 in stamps on the envelope) (to Austria, I'm not sure about the shipping costs to GB).
If you want to check it out: http://www.anavasi.gr/en/greece.php?c=13 the third map from the top.
I haven't checked it on site yet, but am looking forward to doing so in September.

Καλινύχτα σας,
Ανδρέας

PlakChat / Car Hire Plakias
« on: September 01, 2008, 09:50:20 AM »
Picking up the car at the airport saves you from the bus transfer
This more than makes up for the slightly increased cost you get when making a reservation per email.
And you only get (very slightly) cheaper rates if you compare prices in Heraklion (which implies an overnight stay in Heraklion).
So if you intend to rent a car for the whole duration of your holiday, email reservation and airport pickup is your best bet.

Plakias / Internetcafe?
« on: August 19, 2008, 01:37:38 PM »
Hi Herb!

These are the connection types that were available 3 years ago: (searched for "kbps", couldn't find my own old posts ;-) )
Internet connections: Ostraco: 64 kbps ISDN, Forum: 128 kbps ISDN
So if you want to send larger files to your tutor this might take some time...
At the Ostraco they wouldn't let me attach any device to the USB interface. So it wouldn't be very useful for you, I guess.
At the Forum (upstairs from the souvenir shop) they had no objections plus the PCs had front USB ports.
But that was 3 years ago. Things might have changed. Maybe they have broadband now and maybe they have changed their policy...
Fee was € 1.- per 15 minutes IIRC.
Have a nice holiday!

The phrase in the e-mail was:
"The forum involved studies T_T which i HATE"
Any idea what on earth that means?
Hi Roland!

I looked up "T_T" in Wikipedia and found out that it's a horizontal smiley representing crying eyes.
My guess would be that the script that this little @$$ wrote (or, more likely, copied from someone else) checks the forum's keywords first and hacks every vulnerable forum with keyword "studies" (and maybe some others, like e.g. "science" or "mathematics").

I have to admit that I haven't been lurking in the forum much in recent times. I only found out how important it's become for me when I found out that it had been hacked. I almost went mad!

Ploppy, thanks a lot for all the effort you put into this forum. This recent annoying attack didn't make it easier for you. You really give a lot to the commuity. I want you to know that I really appreciate it and if I'm ever at Plakias when you're there, I'd love to show my thankfulness in the form of some nice cool Mythoses.

Where to stay / New appartments behind Ostraco
« on: October 01, 2005, 05:44:53 AM »
I'm off!

Just leaving for the airport in a few minutes.
I just wanted to thank everybody for their help.
This year this forum has really improved my holiday (Limani apartments and valuable info on car rental in a thread earlier this year).
I'll share my experiences as soon as I get back.

From the outside and looking at the photo's on the website these apartments look very expensive. Does anyone have an idea of the price ?
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=4380\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
That's what I thought, but I gave it a try and emailed them anyway, and they're quite reasonably-priced.
I got the apartment for 2 persons for €250 a week (in October). I assume the larger ones will cost a bit more, though.

Where to stay / New appartments behind Ostraco
« on: September 07, 2005, 06:58:27 PM »
Hi all!

As i am in the fortunate position to spend another (rather unexpected) week in Plakias this year  (October 1 - 8)  , I thought it's time to look at some new venues.
At my last stay this June I noticed a new building just behind the Ostraco. It's in the small alley  that goes around the block where Ostraco is in and ends at Aura bar. Does anybody know about these appartments / rooms? (where we can find the owner, approx. prices, etc.)
Thanks!

Do you, or anyone, have any recommendations for the best English breakfast in town?
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3747\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]
We had breakfast at Gialos bar frequently. It's called 'English breakfast', but I'm not sure if it's authentic. However, we really enjoyed it.
Greek coffee (or tea)
1 egg
2 slices of cheese
1 slice of ham
bread
butter + marmalade
yoghurt + honey
fresh orange juice
... very good value for €4.50.

Enjoy!
Andy
