waiting at midnight for the EasyJet flights for next summer to be released so that we can try to grab a bargain deal from Manchester to Heraklion.  Nothing as yet so I suppose I'll have to go to bed and try in the morning. Good hunting

Plakias / Changes at the DVLA and car hire in Crete
« on: April 27, 2015, 05:28:16 PM »
Hi,
Just noticed this on the BBC news site. It may be something that people need to be aware of although I think I have only been asked to show my plastic licence each time I have hired a car.

PlakChat / Petrol Scam at Heraklion Airport
« on: May 29, 2013, 10:35:12 AM »
Hi,

We returned from Plakias and Elounda  a few weeks ago. We hired a car (peugeot cabriolet) from the airport. We had to return the car with the same level of fuel in it as we picked up (between 1/4 and 1/2 full. We drove around a bit and kept topping up with 20 euros of fuel to keep it at that level. When returning to the airport (from Elounda) I stopped at a petrol station not too far from the airport on the main highway to add a top up of 10 euros. the owner at the pump took my 10 euros took the keys to open the filler cap . Allegedly put the fuel in (but the filler was at the rear of the car) gave me keys back and off I drove. The fuel gauge was slow to respond at the best of times but it didn't appear to move at all. I stopped at the next petrol station the last before the airport. I was ushered forward by the owner again keys handed over, fuel "put in", keys back and off I set again. The fuel gauge didn't move again. I was due to hand the car back shortly so went to the car rental depot at the airport where the rental company was fortunately more concerned about a faulty boot lock than the fuel reading. So I think I was scammed over fuel twice.

Moral of the story . If topping up before reu5rning your car to the airport check that the fuel you have purchased is actually going into your car

Where to go / Travelling up to Spinalonga
« on: April 17, 2013, 05:57:20 PM »
Hi All,
We are off to Crete in 2 weeks time. We are hiring a car (the missis made me get a convertible) from Heraklion airport then we are traveling to stay with our friends in Asomatos and spending the Easter weekend in the Plakias area. Sandra read the Victoria Hislop book "The Island" about Spinalonga a few years ago and wants to go and explore the North East of Crete for the rest of our stay. So we will probably have about 4 days to travel there and look around before the pleasures of Heraklion airport again.
Can anyone suggest places we should see apart from the old leper colony and suggest places to stay for a few nights.
We have been as far as Knossos in the past but no further.

Cheers

Tony

PlakChat / Car rental at Heraklion Airport
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:49:51 AM »
Hi,
We are having 8 days in Crete in early May. Arriving with  Easyjet in Heraklion. We want to hire a car to come to Asomatos to stay with our friends for 4 days then travel to explore the northeast of the island (unknown area for us) until we fly out again from Heraklion.
Any recommendations for car hire companies or indeed any firms to avoid.

PlakChat / Thinking of Plakias in early May 2013
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:52:55 AM »
Hi All,

In the past we have always travelled to Plakias in August or September or early October. We can't make it this year but are thinking of going in early May next year.  Can I have the board's collective wisdom as to whether the tavernas etc are all running at that time (second to the 12th of May).  Also grateful for any hints as to what the weather is likely to be like at that time.

Gossip / The words of Philip "The Greek"

Many happy returns on your 90th Birthday.

Here are a few Prince Philip quotes to celebrate the wit of one of our national treasures.

If you stay here much longer, you’ll all be slitty-eyed.

2. To a blind women with a guide

“Do you know they have eating dogs for the anorexic now?”

6. To a Briton in Budapest

“You can’t have been here that long – you haven’t got a pot belly.”

7. To a driving instructor in Scotland

“How do you keep the natives off the booze long enough to get them through the test?”

8. After the Dunblane shooting

“If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?”

9. To a student who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea

“You managed not to get eaten, then?”

10. To Elton John after hearing Elton had sold his Gold Aston Martin

“Oh, it’s you that owns that ghastly car – we often see it when driving to Windsor Castle.”

13. Unknown

Where to eat...or not! / Stelios Taverna in Lefkogia
« on: June 19, 2008, 10:56:51 PM »
We stay with friends who live in Asomatos  (lucky devils) when we come to stay in Crete. We have a favourite taverna in Lefkogia that we eat in frequently at lunchtimes (at night it is a strictly Greek place). As Brian and Kathy are known to Stelios (and his lovely wife Stella) we don't get the "tourist menu" but a greeting of "what would you like?"
he has the most wonderful lamb chops (from his own flock)and virtually any dish "with tomato sauce"
      • "lamb with tomato sauce"
      • "beef with tomato sauce"
      • "chicken with tomato sauce"
      • "pork with tomato sauce"
        "rabbit in tomato sauce"
      • "tomato with tomato sauce!!!"
      [/li]
He is a real gentleman and when he knows you he gives you free wine and endless raki after the meal.

We discovered that Stella has a soft spot for chocolates and when we gave her a (relatively small) box of Thornton's chocolates on a return visit we were given endless wine and a litre bottle of Raki to bring back home!

I recommend that you try it if you are travelling out of Plakias itself.

I'm contemplating what books I will be taking to read when we go to Plakias in September. What is everyone else taking this year?

Hi,

We've been looking at  the calendar and there seems to be a few of us in Plakias in early September. Can we suggest a meet at Medousa on the 10th in the evening for a meal and some drinks for anyone interested as we would love to meet some of the others off the Forum. Please post if interested.

Gossip / Gazing at the moon and stars in Plakias
« on: February 20, 2008, 12:52:22 PM »
Hi all,

When we stay in Crete one of the things that always fascinates me is the beauty of the stars visible at night. I suppose it is the clear Sky's and the relative lack of light pollution (we stay with friends on the mountainside outside Asomatos).
If you have clear skies tonight there is a lunar eclipse visible throughout the Americas and Europe. A link can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_February_2008_lunar_eclipse  . This is the last opportunity to see a total lunar eclipse for 3 years.

Where to eat...or not! / Any ideas for where to eat in Spili?
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:47:16 PM »
After seeing the pictures of Spili on the "Carruthers" thread I thought that we may try a trip out one evening for a meal to see the fountains lit up after dark. Any suggestions or recommendations for where to eat?

PlakChat / A Greek Olive Grower
« on: August 02, 2007, 10:15:40 AM »
A Greek Olive Grower

In a small traditional tavern just outside Plakias in the Greek Island of Crete, an American tourist complimented a Greek villager on the quality of his olives and asked where he found them.

"I have my own olive trees and I pick a few for me, my family and my tavern", answered the Greek.

"But since they are excellent, why don't you pick more?", asked the American.

The Greek explained that his small crop was sufficient to meet his needs, those of his family and his tavern.

The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"I sleep late, fish a little, go to my olive tree field to collect a few olives, go to my tavern for a few hours, play with my children, and take siestas with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends; and sing a few songs. I have a full life."

The American interrupted, "I have a degree from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by picking more olives every day. You can then sell the extra you don't need. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger field. With the extra money the larger field of olive trees will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire area of olive trees where you will have other people working for you!"

"Instead of selling your olives to a middle man, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants which bottle them for consumption and maybe even open your own. You can then leave this little village and move to Athens, Rome or even America! From there you can direct your huge olive enterprise."

"How long will this take?", asked the Greek.

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years", replied the American.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? Well that's when it gets really good", answered the American laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?"

"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children and grandchildren, catch a few fish, take a siesta, and spend your evenings with your friends."
