Plakias / Crowded Plakias?
« on: July 16, 2004, 11:30:25 AM »
Thanks, Compage.  That's filled the picture in a bit.  Now I know what to expect.  Just one more question though.  Why is the taverna quiet in the evenings?  Is the food not good?  (I ask because I plan to eat there in the evening once or twice (being a bit lazy to walk into town).)

Oh, well.  We'll probably pass each other in Reception!

Incidentally, what is the Paligremnos like?  There is very little mention of it on the Forum.  Though nowhere has anyone said anything bad about it.

Mike G,

On the subject of transfer from Heraklion Airport to Plakias.

If you don't mind "slumming it", one option is the bus.  First of all you take the airport bus into Heraklion Port.  Journey time: 20 mins.  Cost: €1/2.  Next, you take the interurban bus to Rethymno.  Journey time: 1 1/2 hrs.  Cost: €5.90.  Finally you take another interurban bus to Plakias.  Journey time: 1 hr.  Cost: €3.10.  Total estimated journey time (this includes waiting for connections):  approx. 7 1/2 hrs.  However, this method is reliable and dirt cheap.  I will be using it.  I don't know how much baggage you take with you: might be a bit of a fag if you carry a lot.  I plan to take only a rucksack.

Hope this helps.

Compage,

Much as I'd like to, I won't be able to come to the Plakforms Dinner as I'm leaving on the 6th.   :'(

However, I have read this topic from the beginning , and have gone through all your 'photos with particular interest as this will be my first trip to Plakias.  I thought they were super, and gave me an idea of what the place is like.  They should certainly be required viewing for any first-timers as John R suggests.

O.K.  I voted no but this may be because I don't know enough about these things.  If you showed all the topics that were ever raised, won't they "run off" the page?  A drop-down menu seems to me to be a neater solution.

You'll have to excuse me, Andy:  I'm a complete computer ignoramus so I'll answer as best as I can.  The browser I'm using is msn, and the operating system is ntl world.  Does that make sense?

The other thing that I've noticed today is the exact opposite of what I've already described: the symbol is highlighted indicating new posts but when I've gone in, there is no new material at all!  The mystery deepens.

An establishment worthy of "investigation" for sure, but...the foreground looks a bit shingly/messy.  How barefoot-friendly is the approach?

I don't know if I'm missing something but I've noticed that the highlighting of the symbols on the left (signifying that you haven't read that forum/topic) disappears pretty fast now.  Before the upgrade these would stay highlighted until you clicked on (and read) them.  Now it's not so easy keeping track of new material that has been posted.   :'(

I do like that additional information now appearing below the name of those posting messages.

Have to step in here with a defence of the film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", although I would stress that I haven't read the book.  At the time of its release the film was given the most awful slating by the critics.  But I found it (or rather, the bit that I saw) very enjoyable:  a nice romantic storyline, and good music.

On the other hand "Traffik" - released round about the same time - received such rave reviews that I made a special point of going to see it...and regretted it.  It was so boring I could hardly keep my eyes open, and was glad when it finally came to an end.

Just shows you can't trust the critics.

Thanks John and Zell (and everybody else) for the information.

I am staying at the Paligremnos, and was wondering if the bus stopped nearby (on its way to Preveli?).  I'll ask the driver if he can drop me off there; if not, it doesn't matter: I can manage a ten-minute walk, as I plan to be only taking a rucksack.  (I'm sorry, I don't yet know where LAMON is in the scheme of things.)

I'm going in the first week of September so I won't be able to take you up on your kind invitation.  However, on your advice, I will be packing insect-repellent, just to be on the safe side!

Thank you everybody, once again.

I'm holidaying in Plakias for the first time this year, and was wondering if anyone out there could advise me on a couple of basics:

1. Arrival.  After the bus has dropped you off in town, how far is to walk to accomodation at the eastern end of the beach?

2. Crime.  What are the levels?  I mean, how safe is it to leave your things on the beach unattended while you go in to the sea for a dip, the taverna for a drink, etc.?

3. Insect life.  Are there any mosquitos (they love me, unfortunately), and, if so, how troublesome are they?

Thanks.
