Plakias / Re: Taxis and return to Plakias
« on: May 14, 2017, 01:55:55 PM »
Taxis and, then, two feet are the best option...nothing is too remote around Plakias. Quad bikes are fun but they re not covered on many holiday insurance deals (as they young lady in Zante found out) and, although the roads are in much better shape than they used to be, many of the off-road paths are simply that...paths. They are not built or designed for quad bikes. There is also the fact that they make so much noise and many would not welcome that. That's the reason why you seldom see jet skis in the bay - too much noise and pollution. The taxi drivers will do their very best to take you where you want to go....and it will be safe, relaxing and quick.

It's up to you.....simply tell them where you want to go. You could go to Damnoni and then walk or they could drop you off at the beach. The only problem would be getting the taxi back if there is nowhere to ring from...but I have often found the mobile signals are better in Crete than they are here (and I live in the middle of a city !). Most of the tavernas will be able to ring a taxi for you....you just need to make sure you're near one as some of the beaches are just that........nothing but sand, cliffs and sea.....and sunshine....and relaxation....and...and. Hope you enjoy it however you get there. When you get to Plakias just ask where Taxis 4 U are based. I cant quite remember but it is down one of the side streets and they speak good English too. Enjoy.x

Dont be afraid to approach the taxi drivers on the sea front...they nearly all speak English and are extremely helpful. We have used them loads of times and they are good value for money too. Many of them take coffee in the Livikon Hotel so you can always check there too. For example, I wanted to go and see the new solar panels at Assomatos.....Georgia from the Livikon explained this to one of the drivers who was amazing - taking me up to the site and to various other installations (I work in low carbon energy issues in the UK). Getting a taxi to the beaches, to Mirthios, Sellia, Rethymnon, Spilli or Prevelli is not a problem. And there's always the taxi office of Taxis 4 U who are also helpful......and Takis Milonakis....one of the drivers I am friends with on Facebook. Give it a go and dont lose out by being shy ! Enjoy !

Hmmmm........went booking yesterday ! Donna at Thomas Cook in town went through the offer for Plakias in September and, on their system, it included transfers. I explained the 'problem' with transfers as, when I had checked on line there was still a big red cross against their inclusion. On Thomas Cook's system there was the additional option of 'upgrading' to a personal taxi transfer at £120 each way.....which is what seems to have been offered to many people in this thread.
Anyway our rep, the lovely Donna, rang them, explained the concern and confirmed that transfers were included and that it has nothing to do with which airport or airline. So, I managed to book with transfers included and an additional £200+ of budgeted money transferred to the 'cocktail account'.
Just to say....be careful with this especially if you are booking online yourself. It may be better to work with a Travel Agent as they can question things for you. In the circumstances its going to be a very early arrival so a few hours kip on the coach wont be a problem.
Looking forward to Sept now !

Me too.......they were having some very stormy, wet and cold weather so I suspect there's a technical hitch.

It seems to have been a bit blowy in Plakias Bay recently - interspersed with bright, clear calm days (a bit like Plymouth at the best of times). Going to be interesting to hear whether this year's weather is any better or worse than usual. Hoping to be back in September !

We were warned about this just before we left in September and it looks as though Olympic are coming in for lots of flack about it...I dont think it has anything to do with which flight you're on or which company you book with. We were advised to check out Taxis 4 You in Plakias (www.taxiplakias.com or www.taxi4you.gr ) as the website is also in English and you can book in very easily. At the moment only the 2016 prices are displayed but they still appear to be cheaper than hailing a taxi at the airport (something we've done a couple of times). I think it is very cynical of Olympic to add this to the bill....so will take every opportunity of ensuring my money goes to a local company.

How do you tell the difference between a stoat and a weasel ? One's weasily recognised the other's stoat-ally different ! Blame Arthur Askey for that one !

I will have visited Plakias for 30 years next year and...yes....it has changed but nowhere near as much as many of the other places I love. There is still something there. I thought the first week this year was very vibrant and hectic but, by the end of the holiday, things had quietened down. We've tried other places (dont get e started on Tenerife !!!) but I think there is a pulley somewhere with Plakias's name on it. I never thought I'd grow tired of Plymouth but I am now having second thoughts and guess where I'd choose. Horse for courses as they say !
