Plakias , where the summer never ends

I know Plakias very well lived there for 11 years. Because of my work I moved to Rethymno. I would like to recommend Plakias here for overwintering holidays. There a many sunny days on the south of Crete and untill December you may encounter the beach for swimming and sunning. The place is less crowded of course, but because the locals live there and are not moving back to the cities in the winter, there is also some nightlife with taverns and bars that stay open. Accommodations, with heathing are available, like Anna's and Koules and Zambia. Also Morpheas or many other places that can help you with good rates for longer periods. Than from Januari when spring is making the country like a postcard you can make beautiful walks in the area. See the farmers, collecting their olives, maybe give them a hand and get some oil for your help. If you have no job obligations, why not change your rainy or cold place for a few months in Spring on Crete and come to Plakias, where the summer never ends.

I hear from friends that there are Greek courses for foreigners, that there is a foreign library, that there are bridge evenings, that there is life in Plakias in the winter, see you there than.

Having just returned from Crete I'm obviously busy planning my next trip.  My work at a university means it's only really convenient to take longer holidays during the Easter or Summer breaks, so I was thinking about next April.   What kind of weather should I expect then; and are there likely to be many other visitors around?

In April the weather can be very nice. Some days are good for a long walk, for which this area is very good, some days you can get the first tan on the beach.
Nights are little cooler.
In Plakias its a depending on the foreign easter holidays if everything is open. For sure you'll find some good taverns open, like mouses and sofia or harakas.
and coming direct you'll notice that you can get cheap rooms. No April is a good alternative if you cant come in the Summer.

I cannot answer this specifically about Easter .But I have been in plakias on the Festival of the Assumption , which is a public holiday , and the buses run a sunday service on that day - or indeed on the following monday if the assumption is on a sat or sunday so the public holiday is the monday . Now of course that is at the height of the holiday season , unlike Easter, so it could be different at easter but I would guess that that is the same on all public holidays

Normally in April busses run on winter schedule. which is 7.00 and 15.00 to Rethymno, return 14.15 . Taxi cost 25 euro. But who wants to leave Plakias in springtime

Having visited Plakias for many years I have decided to spend a few months in this wonderful place (who knows it may be a few years).  I am so interested by your information re winter in Plakias and, when I have sold my house in England, I will be looking for somewhere to rent in Plakias hopefully/probably through the winter months.   It is very reassuring that Plakias will be staying alive during the winter and that it will be possible to learn some Greek, as I believe it is important to speak at least a little of this wonderful language.  Will keep you all posted as to when I shall arrive and look forward to joining the Plakias and Mirthios community.

Having visited Plakias for many years I have decided to spend a few months in this wonderful place (who knows it may be a few years).  I am so interested by your information re winter in Plakias and, when I have sold my house in England, I will be looking for somewhere to rent in Plakias hopefully/probably through the winter months.   It is very reassuring that Plakias will be staying alive during the winter and that it will be possible to learn some Greek, as I believe it is important to speak at least a little of this wonderful language.  Will keep you all posted as to when I shall arrive and look forward to joining the Plakias and Mirthios community.

 Thank you Graham and Karen and harribobs for your good wishes - sorry not to have replied earlier - must have been dreaming about Plakias.  House not sold yet, but I`m sure I will be on my way soon.  Can anyone tell me exactly where the library is?   Is it the building on the corner that looked as though it might once have been a primary/infant school?  Am intrigued and can`t wait to visit.  Also, where are the Greek lessons and who is the tutor?  Does anyone know if Agios Pavlos is still an holistic health centre - reiki, etc?   So many questions ......  Many thanks and good wishes to all.

Hi Cecile

The Library is just up past the youth hostel, the building on the corner was considered for it but the guys organising it decided against it.  

The Greek lessons only happened the winter before last and were organised by the Local Womens Group and the district council.  Unfortunately they did not happen last winter.  There is a German guy, Wolfgang, who did lessons last year but do not know if he is still doing them.  It is also possible to do courses throught the University up in Rethymno.

I believe Agios Pavlos is still an Holistic Centre, I haven't heard to the contrary.

In Agios Pavlos is still operating the yoga and reiki center. Much closer to Plakias a german and Dutch couple started from their house this relaxing therapy.

 Hallo again - many thanks to Ali and Dave and to albertdiver for responses to my questions.   With regard to learning Greek, I am trying here with my BBC course!!  It is great fun.  Look forward to visiting the library.

I have had a good visit to the reiki.kreta website which is most interesting and Mixorouma is, as you say, much closer than Agios Pavlos.  I could understand the German enough to see that they have set up what appears to be an excellent `sanctuary`.

I am writing this from a sunny south coast of England, but not as sunny as Plakias I am sure.
