Kalimera, the Deputy Governor of Rethymno, Maria Lioni, accompanied by executives from the Director of Technical Works of the Regional Unit of Rethymno, inspect the construction sites in the Kotsifou Gorge during a joint meeting.

Plakias / "Overtourism" in the Kourtaliotiko gorge
« on: September 12, 2024, 11:09:47 AM »
Kalimera, there have been some newspaper articles in the local media in the last few weeks about ?overtourism? in the Kourtaliotiko gorge (NATURA2000 area).

A big problem is the crowds, there are no toilets and a lot of rubbish is left in the gorge,

The movement to protect the springs of Kourtalioti is fortunately very active and there is a FB group: SOS PLAKIAS #SavePreveli

Plakias / Re: Souda beach no longer naturist
« on: September 12, 2024, 10:05:07 AM »
Kalimera, I was in Souda/Plakias from 29 September to 13 November 2023 and during this time almost half of the beach was nudist.

At the far end of Paligremnos beach by the dunes was also naturist as usual.

Where to go / Re: Mirthios/Myrthios Tavernas
« on: September 11, 2024, 09:42:23 AM »
The village of Mirthios/ Myrthios is just above Plakias and has a few shops and four Tavernas I know of. The Plateia, The Panorama, Dionyssos and Vrisi.

Kalimera, madness, now the 5th Taverna has opened in the small village of Mirthios/Myrthios. In May, the Taverna Kapilio opened in Georgia's Kafepantopleiion.

Mirthios/Myrthios is 2 km from Plakias and 36 km from Rethymnon as the crow flies, at an altitude of 160 - 200 metres and has a wonderful, unobstructed view of the bay of Plakias and the Libyan Sea.

The local community of Mirthios comprises the settlements of Mirthios, Kalipso, Kampos, Kokkina Chorafia, Plakias and Finikas.

Mirthios has long ceased to be an insider tip. Especially in summer, Mirthios gets really busy in the evenings. Everyone wants to eat in the 5 tavernas (Panorama, Plateia, Dyonissos, Vrisi and Kapilio) in the evening and enjoy the panoramic view/sunset over Plakias.

Mirthios has now become very trendy and a little chic (gentrifaction), also thanks to the shops selling jewellery and clothes. Unfortunately, there is no longer a Kafenio. There used to be 2 quaint Kafenia in Mirthios. One was opposite the Dyonissos taverna, which was still called Myrthos at the time. Then there was Georgia's Kafepantopleiion. She was over 90 years old and died a few years ago.

Where to stay / Re: Long term rentals
« on: September 11, 2024, 08:25:44 AM »
Kalimera, I'm bringing this thread up again - as I'm always interested in long-term rentals.

I had a look at the Morpheas Apartments in November 2023, the supermarket is part of it.
Some apartments and studios are rented out here in winter. Just speak to the person at the checkout in the supermarket.

Kalimera, according to a newspaper report from yesterday, the Kotsifou gorge is to be reopened to motor traffic in September.

Specialised teams have already cleared the mountain of dangerous rocks.

Where to stay / Re: Two month stay
« on: August 05, 2024, 10:41:02 AM »
Kalimera Davos, the best way is of course always to be on site and look at a few accommodations and then talk to the landlord about all the details (costs etc.).

Morpheas next to the supermarket (belong together) rents out several studios and apartments, also for longer periods.

Plakias / Re: Lovely to be Back!
« on: July 18, 2024, 12:51:09 PM »
Kalimera DandC, I'm glad you had a nice time in Plakias and thank you for your feedback.

- "tourist profile different to recent years: say 30% German, UK, French"

I don't think much has changed. The majority have always come from German-speaking countries, followed by the UK and France. Then Scandinavia, Benelux, Israel and the USA...

- "definitely busier than previous years but not overly so"

I also observed this last year. Plakias was still packed with tourists until the end of October. October has been the new September for a few years now.

In recent years, Plakias has developed from a resort into a proper town with a school, etc. Plakias is now also to get a secondary school.

The Plakias region has been very popular with northern Europeans and residents for many years - many have a house here. Many families from Albania have also settled in Plakias and the surrounding area in recent years.

Many new villas have been built. Plakias is continuing to expand in the direction of Lefkogia. Permits for 100 new buildings have been issued for 2024. There are even more licences for 2025. Plakias and the surrounding area are booming...

- "The Kotsifou gorge is still closed and prob for some time to come."

Have you been able to find out anything about the current status of the construction work? There hasn't been a new article in the local media since mid-June.

Best regards from Hamburg, kv

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Thread for Friends of Christos
« on: July 18, 2024, 12:49:09 PM »
Kalimera shinaria, I was in Souda/Plakias from 26 March to 22 April. Christos was already open during that time. All the tavernas, cafes, bars and shops in Plakias were open 95% of the time.

If you read the reviews on Google Maps, there are a lot of dissatisfied reviews alongside the many good reviews. Most guests complained about the unfriendly service and, in some cases, the quality of the food.

One example: "Small portions, large prices, rude, serious and impersonal staff. The seafood is delicious, but the portions are only for tasting... At the end there is not even a raki as a treat."

I've been making these observations on Crete for a few years now. The portions are getting smaller and smaller, but the price is getting higher. That's one reason why I hardly go out to eat in tavernas on Crete any more. I prefer to cook for myself.

Kalimera DandC, I wouldn't assume that the road will be clear again in a fortnight. It's probably technically very complicated.

?It is recalled that following a conversation between the Mayor of Ag. Vassiliou with Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his recent visit to Gerani, the Prime Minister was informed of the impact of the landslide, with the Mayor sending him a detailed memorandum to explore a long-term and radical response to the safe link and its funding options.?

I wish you nice days in Plakias, kv

Plakias / Re: Update Plakias: At the end of March/April 2024
« on: June 12, 2024, 03:20:59 PM »
I think it was about 10 years ago that the whole ?food mile? near the harbour burnt down. Now everything is new again and the ?strako is still there.

There are reports in the Cretan newspapers from time to time. But nothing is happening...

The problem is probably that there is no company for this work on Crete, only on the mainland.

There is also a lack of clarity about how to proceed. It seems to be technically complicated...

I assume that the road through the gorge will be closed for some time to come.
