Plakias / Re: Changes over the past few years
« on: June 14, 2023, 07:12:04 PM »
Thanks for the information, the videos really do show the ongoing work. It looks like there is construction work everywhere along the road and that will continue all this summer. Not exactly picturesque if as far as Souda as well! There seems to be roadworks everywhere, over here and over there. Yes, I'm now wondering where the development will stop?

Plakias / Changes over the past few years
« on: May 14, 2023, 12:21:01 PM »
My last visit to Plakias was in June 2019, where I had a lovely trip that went pretty well.
In simple terms what has changed since then and over the last four years. I understand that there has been some development of properties that are set back from the main coast road through the village (Somewhere near/behind Antoni's Place I believe)? Are there any updated photos that can be seen on this site?
Anything else that might have changed? There was talk of a ring road making the area pedestrianized so does that limit access by car to some places?
Any further information would be most welcome.
Thank you all.

I will have my second jab in late May so if Greece goes green in June then it might all be fairly easy to arrange a holiday in July/September. Does anyone have an idea of formalities required if fully vaccinated, and regarding any tests needed as well or which type of proof required? : ???

Plakias / Plakias Far end, what's there now (summer 2020)?
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:11:48 PM »
I have just had a look on the web cam and can't see any sunbeds/parasols at the far end at all (maybe it's my eyes)? Does anyone know if any are there this summer? I can see a set of beds nearer towards the web cam but nothing further up.

Also, last year lots of small rocks and boulders were washed up along the shore line at the far end, making for tricky access to the sea. Does anyone know if they have washed away to make for a nice sandy walk into the sea? It was okay there is 2016 and 2017 but not in 2019.

Thanks (I'm still looking for deals this September but nothing is looking discounted yet).

Angelo is still there (I popped in for a cocktail the other day). He still has the same laugh...

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic 2019

What can I say, but as a newbie I was lucky enough to get two cheap solo holidays under £350 for a week in June to Plakias (including transfers and baggage) in 2016 and 2017. This year I paid for 9 nights via Booking dot com and a good return day flight from Leeds and Bradford and night flight back with baggage giving me 10 days to play with. The cost for both was just over £400 then a hire car at 27 Euros per day. The freedom and scenery from the car was stunning so maybe we just have to pay a bit more, and in my case, "grow a pair" as they say, and go for it. An amazing holiday was had with the daily road trips up in the hills and along the beautiful South coast.
If you really want to do something then you can (if you have a driving licence that is).

Plakias / Re: Car hire

I used Moto Auto Plakias, and was met at the airport by Haris's brother on arrival and departure. This helped me greatly for the first time hiring a car. Haris also gave me a gift of a tin of his own grown olive oil (how nice). I did about 430k all holiday including the airport run and return and actually put in 43 Euros of fuel (so 10 Euros per 100K). The car was a suitable little Fiat Panda which was great for getting up the hills, very recommended.
Thanks all.

Plakias / Re: June holiday report

I noticed this at the far end. Boulders all along the entry to the sea apart from one man-made channel, "ooh ah ouch" as you enter and the sea fairly chilly for mid June too. Two years ago the sky was full blue every day but this year the odd partly cloudy muggy day and lots of little black stinging/biting flies (like corn flies). I was constantly attacked by the blighters at Souda but was informed they were everywhere (a first for me).

Yes, this is near the existing beach bar opposite Paligremnos. It is probably built now but looks like a similar beach bar.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Different tavernas to try this year

Report on my return:

Taverna Scirocco (It always looked full and busy before).
I was actually mixed up with Tasomanolis, which looks nice but again very busy on an evening so I avoided it. Scirocco is next door but set back a bit.

Taverna Kastro (I have a car to get there)
I had a drive up there but it looked a bit sad with just one family dining there (and they looked local or Greek).

Taverna Panorama (Myrthios by car)
As advised, I visited Vrisi instead. Wonderful place and great staff. Frank and Julie, I mentioned you to Nickos and it brought a great smile to his face and I also received top service. The young girl was amazing and very attentive. very recommended, thanks.

Antoni's Place (is this place more for lunch at the beach?)
Shame, I visited in the day when slightly off my food so went for an easy omelette. The only thing was that there was enough for two and lots of butter, ham and fatty cheese so I didn't think I did myself any favours (when will I learn to keep it even more simple with a salad). I would return though but maybe on an early evening for something simple and fresh.

Another recommendation is a trip up to Sellia. I went with a friend I met on the beach. She suggested Elia but when we went in there it was so warm at the rear of the non reserved tables, without a breeze. We then walked round to Merastri Taverna and took a table near the roadside with the glass balustrades which had a view over everyone's heads down to Plakias. We received top class service from the young lads who were part of the family run taverna. We tried the specials, Artichokes in lemon sauce and green beans in a tomato sauce, followed by wild rabbit with big Greek chips (fiddly, but yummo as they say).

Thanks all, Plakias is great isn't it? (Three visits now in four years and no doubt more to come).

Everything is booked with Haris and Moto Auto Plakias, and I have the details.
I am hoping it is a Fiat Panda as stated (as have never driven one before) and they are slightly higher price on the other sites than the most basic small car. The initial daytime journey is 71 miles from the airport to Plakias so the more comfy the ride the better.

Some good info there thanks, I might try Antoni's Place for sure, it looks more rustic too.

Where to eat...or not! / Different tavernas to try this year
« on: June 08, 2019, 11:43:46 AM »
I would like to try a few different tavernas this year in Plakias and have picked several but wonder about bookings required and value and views from the table:

Taverna Scirocco (It always looked full and busy before)
Taverna Kastro (I have a car to get there)
Taverna Panorama (Myrthios by car)
Antoni's Place (is this place more for lunch at the beach?)

Does anyone have any reports or experience of these places, as they all look like they have a sea view and very nice indeed?

Fingers crossed, I have just sent off my form to Haris (Moto Plakias) for the hire car. He stated it was a Panda for E27 per day, which I believe is the slightly better small car (the last one I hired in Kos last year was a Suzuki Alto small car)? I paid E26 per day in Kos and was not sure if the insurance fully covered me but Haris states that this policy is full. I always panic when driving when the mirror could hit the bushes on the side of the road. I am always thinking there could be a sting of a bill for scratches at the end of the holiday.
