Plakias / Water sports

Hi......not sure but I'm pretty sure there was a jet ski whizzing across the bay on the webcams this morning. I thought they were banned from Plakias Bay (especially near the beaches) for safety reasons and because of the fine film of diesel they leave on the water that threatens the Blue Flag beach status - I know it was 'orrible swimming through that a few years ago when a visiting jet skier was seen off. Anyone any idea if they've been allowed back ?

Holiday Companies / Check your plans...just in case

Hi.....has anyone else recently had their plans changed by Olympic Holidays.....again ? First we were told our booked flights had been delayed by a few hours. Now they've been brought forward by almost 12 hours ! Whilst I really don't mind getting to Plakias a bit sooner than planned....I do object to having to book an unplanned stay at Gatwick (adding £100 to the budget) so that I'm there for the 07.25 check in !. Why do they think we look for afternoon/evening flights in the first place ? For some of us, the distance to the airport and the lack of 24 hr train services to get there means careful planning and I doubt we'll get any compensation for complying with their changes !

Holiday Companies / New Olympic Brochure

I know not everyone uses Olympic but emails told me yesterday that their new brochure was out for the Summer of 2016 so I had a look. OK....the first attempt on line gave me a silly price for three weeks in Sept ...so I tried again ! It actually came up with some very comparable prices. We have already booked in on a good price so I was pleased to see that the online options were pretty good and only just slightly cheaper......not sure how long that will last (prices change more often than the weather conditions) but it might be worth seeing what they offer........and, by the way, this isn't an ad for Olympic ! I am just keen to ensure Plakias lovers get there for the best possible prices !

Plakias / Eco Plakias

Every year I find something new to research in Plakias and this year it was the rather large moth that decided to join us one evening in the Pool Bar at Costas Chrysoulas...It was HUGE - approx. 10cm across ! ( scared the life out of the house ghecko ). Anyway, I think it was an Oleander Hawk Moth (Daphnis nerii ) which is one of Europe's largest moths. Although not confined to Greece and the islands, it is obviously at home here given the number of Oleander bushes. It varies in colour but usually includes some pink or red and is very beautiful. Sadly my rather poor photo of it is too large to post but, like the rest of us, it stayed for a while and then went home !

Plakias / Threat to Italy's olive groves

A friend found this in the Daily Mail and I would hate to think that this little bug would spread to Crete's olive groves. That would be the last economic hit they need. Does anyone know if this is a cause for concern yet ?

Forum and Website discussion / Membership

Hi...sorry to ask through this bit of the forum but I wasn't sure how else to ask.

My husband tried to join Plakias Forums earlier in the year but has yet to receive anything back in response to the request. He cant register as he doesn't have a password and cant re-register as he is told his user name is already being used. It seems to be a catch 22 situation.....and he is desperate to be part of the discussion !!!! (he's as nuts about Plakias as I am !).

Can you check any requests you have for Dai Edwards (daiedwards101@gmail.com)  and let us know if there is a problem ?

From my point of view (and with apologies to footie fans everywhere) the only good thing about the World Cup is the fact that Tescos Extras (the big stores) now appear to stock Mythos.......will be off to my local supplier asap ! Nothing like celebrating the Plakias way !

It's worth checking with your local Tescos to see if stocks are in !

Plakias / Samaria Gorge the Hard Way !

Hi.....could someone in Plakias....or someone who's going out soon....let me know if the Samaria the Hard Way (the long walk from top to bottom) excursion is being run this year and, if so, how much and which day ? Have been challenged to do this to celebrate my 50th birthday and there could be some sponsorship for my local food association riding on it ! Many thanks.
