Where to eat...or not! / Re: Sifis March 2025
« on: April 19, 2025, 01:10:01 PM »
Oh dear, that is expensive, hope its not repeated elsewhere, but bound to be. Our first night will be in Siroko which I am guessing will also be expensive, but it is our tradition to eat there on the first night for the past 20 years.

I have been told that on the rocks has closed permanently and Nikos has retired, can someone confirm this for me?

OK, but what about the cafe part? It was always a favourite spot for coffee/beer/ G&T/ice creams etc.

Plakias / Re: Update Plakias: At the end of March/April 2024
« on: April 25, 2024, 04:55:20 PM »
Bad health has stopped me getting to anywhere in Greece in the past few years, and my last visit to Plakias was October 2019 (but did get to the Pelopponese in October 2020) so there were zero major changes to the village then, but now? Not too sure, but whatever I and other tourists think, it is up to the local residents to choose, and, if they approve it all, then so be it, us tourists must accept the changes. Over development of more houses is not good, but it's not our village, local voices are the only ones to count.
Of course the people of Plakias are one of the main draws to me after 20+ years of going there, and they remain, and I hope I can still count many of them as friends, so my views on the changes must wait untill I can go and see for myself, God willing.

Thanks Don Vigo, I use Skyline webcams a lot, but didn't see this one! The on screen logo suggests it is from Atlantis taverna and apartments.

Check Youtube for various videos, the latest is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OnFdRWbUEM
This shows the major changes to the seafront road up to the bridge. This is a major change, don't know yet where the taxi rank is, nor how or where the buses will stop and turn. I bet The Livikon is not too pleased with all the work going on in front of them!
Haven't been to Plakias since October 2019, would love to go back and see all the friends there, but other things are conspiring against me that will probably halt my Greek travels, I will have to rely upon Youtube videos from now on.

If anyone wants to see the works nearing competion, check out this video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJfjFmSm6pk
Zameer Pactyan must live on Crete and has posted a large number of videos from all ove Crete with several of them from Plakias. Watch the whole video or fast forward to 21 minutes when he is just driving down the hill into Plakias from Lefkogia. If my link doesnt pass through scrutiny, just do a search for Zameer Pactyan. Nikos at On The Rocks (Nikos Plakias Ontherocks is his Facebook page) has also posted some videos of the new tarmac being laid outside his place, note the PPE being worn by all (not)!
Hopefully my health will improve and I can make it back to Plakias again soon, been missing it these last 3 years, and after 20 years of going there it has been been difficult being away for so long.

Plakias / Floods
« on: October 16, 2022, 12:52:26 PM »
Terrible news and pictures of the floods on Crete, all the news is from the North coast, but can anyone tell me did anything bad happen to Plakias, did the gorges overflow like before and damage the roads etc in the southern areas of Crete?
Best wishes to all those that have been affected, wherever they may be.

I second that, do try Zach, been using him for many years, last price was about 115 euros one way, but that was, sadly, 2 years ago, hope to get back in 2023.

Daniel, We haven't made it to Plakias for over 2 years now, due to covid, travel restrictions and my health causing several cancellations, and we do miss it, it was the place where we fell in love with Greece and the Greek people well over 20 years ago, and we have 2 other places we visit regularly (always try to do all 3 each year) but old age and ill health hasnn't so much as crept up on me, more like charged in with a fanfare of trumpets, and will restrict my choices, if I have any! The long and costly taxi transfer to Plakias is one factor, (I won't drive as I like my ouzo too much) but I know we will try at least one more time, to form our own opinions, and maybe to say a proper goodbye to Plakias and all the good folk who live and work there.

You lucky so-and-so! Wish I were there, if I can do it, I will stay at Creta Mare for the first time in over 22 years, sorry Kostas, you lose out to the view.
