nice to see you back after a long gap George, complete with a new photo.
Yes, the 'photo looks suspiciously familiar... :-
But it was a very enjoyable evening, wasn't it?

Noopsy

Hi guys

Haven't written for ages but I remember the evening well despite the after-effects of the raki the next day. It's my striped shirt in the background of the photo. Not sure yet whether we'll be in Plakias this September as we've not booked anything yet. Hope to see you again sometime - it was a great holiday.

Where to stay / Two-bedroom apartment

Returning to Plakias last week in October to experience what it's like end of season. Posted before trying to find a larger  apartment for 4 but all seem to have one bedroom and convertible bed in the living room rather than two bedrooms. This tends not to suit as unlike on work days at home I am up at the crack of dawn and would disturb our teenage kids who have discovered how to lie in. Any ideas? Also what can we expect in terms of weather, places being open etc? We have always been previously end of May/beginning of June. Thanks.

Try Morpheas Apartments on the front overlooking the sea. They have 2 bedroom family apartments with the other bedroom on an upper floor. They also have a well-equipped kitchen incl. a washing machine in the family apartments, although we only had a studio for 2 when we visited in Sept.

Cheers

I usually take £-Sterling TC's and I usually change them in the Alianthos, I find the staff very agreeable  , and no they do not charge any commision  . The rate on the board is what you get!

george g...

You're lucky,George. If I remember correctly the Alianthos always charged me commission even though my T/Cs were in Euros, and even though I was actually staying there.

Noopsy

George,

To check if my recollection was correct I've just changed E100 at the Alianthos, and they charged me 2 percent commission (whilst remaining "very agreeable").    So you must have PP status with them...

I've just returned from Plakias and apart from taking some €s left over from our June holiday I only used my (Nationwide) debit card to obtain cash. As a result of my query on the forum when I established there were 4 ATMs along the front I used my card on several occasions (you can only draw €300 at a time) and never had any problems. There was an ATM only a few steps from where we were staying and although on 1 occasion it was empty I used another a little further down the road. On checking my account on return to the UK I found I was getting between €1.25/26 to the £, a much better rate than at home and no handling charge or commission. I've never had any difficulty with this method (touch wood) anywhere in Greece over the years.

Hi Guys

Well you've got my picture, and it seems to look like me, got approached (sorry wrong word, but you know what I mean) three or four times, last year by people who recognised me.

Stick one up of yourselves, that might help.

If all fails, I'll be reading the telegraph and have an Alianthos in the... button hole!!

Hi George

Have now put a photo of us both on my profile (I'm the one with the beard!)

See you all on the 10th.

We are out there on 5th September. Are you still up for a meet at Medousa on 10th September?

Tony and Sandra
I've checked the diary and it's looking good, got a bit of free time on my hands, so yes I'm in!!

george g...

We are in Plakias from 5-17 Sept. but as this is only our 2nd time (1st time was 18 yrs. ago) we won't know any of you guys. We had thought of joining you at Medousa on 10th if that's OK.

Anyone else on holiday in Plakias during those 2 weeks. Maybe meet for a drink or 2 at night or if interested in football watch a game as my wife is not interested in football Unless Scotland are playing that is!!

We are in Plakias from 5th - 17th Sept. but as we don't know anyone, not sure how we could meet up. Is there a particular bar where you all go? As we're from the West country (well Gloucester anyway) are there any bars that serve draught/bottled cider?

I have suggested a meet at Medousa on 10th Sept (see http://forums.plakias.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1281). come along if you fancy it!

Tony

Sounds a great idea - we'll try and be there.

For several years I have bought € at the Post Office as they didn't charge commission and the rate was good. They are still commission free but the rate is now very poor. My bank (Barclays) is now commission free and offers a much better rate. On the day I bought € it was €1.1994 against €1.1741. With the recent decline in the value of the £ we need all the help we can get!

For those with a Nationwide credit card (which also charges no commission for purchases abroad) I found their rate (which is the commercial rate rather than the tourist rate) was about €0.07 better than buying € in the UK. If you do use a CC abroad make sure they charge you in €, because if they convert to £ the rate they use is likely to be poor.

This thread could also be used to share experiences of the ATMs in Plakias, should anyone wish to do so.

Mike

We went to Paros in June and I took €100 with me which I got from the Post Office at the pathetic rate of 119 to £. I then used my N/wide debit card to withdraw cash for the whole holiday and got between 127/129 to £ in Greece. Now, thanks to those who replied to my earlier query about ATMs in Plakias I'll take my leftover €s from June for the 1st day or so and draw all my cash there. If you use a N/wide credit card in an ATM you will get the same rate of exchange without any transaction charge but you will pay interest from the date you draw it out until you pay it off.

Regarding using cards for car hire - if you arrange a pick-up from the airport in the middle of the night you may not be able to use a card to pay directly (our cotact took mastercard but not visa). However - no problem as we just popped back into the airport and got money out from an ATM. It did mean we'd used up our withdrawal limit for that day though.

They have always taken my card details by hand in the past. Just to show how laid back and trusting they can be this is my experience for this coming year (Mid Sept) :-

I went with them last year (excellent) so they know me and they are aware that I know the ropes so to speak. I told them that I will be arriving at the airport early hours of the morning. They don't want to get up in the middle of the night so they are going to leave the car documentation and car keys with the kiosk at the car park (familiar to me and I know where they park up). I have sent them my licence details so that they can fill in documentation correctly. When I asked about how I should pay them (was cash last year) they simply said - see you around at some time during your 18 day stay - we trust you.

John R

Thanks to everyone who replied. We will probably wait until we get to Plakias to hire a car - I don't fancy trying to find my way from Heraklion airport to Plakias at 10.30pm and the owner of Morpheas Apartments where we're staying says she will arrange for a local taxi to collect us (I've asked her to let me know how much it will cost).

there are four atms along the front  now

Many thanks. That's put my mind at rest - I didn't want to have to change my £s in the UK. I think I posted my query in the wrong section, it was my 1st.

My wife and I are visiting Plakias for only the 2nd time, the 1st being in 1990! (I thought it was time we went again). We have visited Greece every year since 1980 but have been going to Paros for the last 10+ years. My specific query is whether there are any banks or ATM cash machines in Plakias as I prefer to use my Debit card in Greece to draw out money as we need it as we get a much better exchange rate than in UK and my bank doesn't charge any commission or handling fee. Also do car hire places etc take credit/debit cards?
