That makes sense, thanks. Hope they put in bigger sewage pipes as well.

Difficult for me to see from the webcams but does anyone know what's happening to the seafront? Some type of building work?

Thanks for the update! We'd booked 3 weeks at that new hotel for the end of August (Algeria Baech hotel?). Here in Norway the government has effectly banned anyone from travelling internationally until at least the 20 August. If you do travel then insurance won't be valid and the government has said that they won't help you if you get in trouble. You also have to quarantine for 14 days when you get back. I'm hoping they'll have a change of heart before then as I've already had my 8 weeks holiday to Crete in the spring cancelled. Today, for the first time this year here, the temperature has reached double figures! 10 degrees C! Woohoo!

Unfortunately, we're not coming to Plakias in September this year as my Norwegians want to try something else. I've arranged 11 days in Stavros then 10 days in Plaka in the north. I will be hiring a car, though, to spend at least 1 day in Plakias. Would love to read about other peoples visit to Plakias.

Off topic:
I'm currently in Almyrida, where I decamp to every spring to escape the awful climate in Norway. It's been a lot cooler this year with lots of wind.
What I have noticed over the last few years is the amount of new hotels, apartments and luxury villas that have been built. What used to be beautiful green hills are now mostly concrete. On my hikes I notice that almost all the villas stand empty. A shame. And the small coastal town has become overcrowded with tourists. The small beaches are just a mass of bodies.
Was talking to an internet engineer a few days ago and he said they're having a huge problem trying to deal with all the extra internet requirements as the infrastructure is so out of date they can't handle the extra load being asked for.
The view from my balcony across the bay is still wonderful, however.

I forgot to mention that we had to pay an extra 1.5Euros per day in tax for each room. Only for places rated 3 stars and above, apparently. We were given the safe for free, though (would have cost 31.5Euros otherwise). Interestingly, we couldn't pay it with the room bill but had to pay it seperately, in cash.

Yesterday turned out to be wet and windy all day. The town was jam packed with cars but not many people braved the weather.

During the night there was thunder, lightning, lots of rain - the sea looks brown today with all the run off. I didn't hear a thing as I have to use earplugs because of the wife's snoring.

Today is a lot better, less wind and some blue skies. +22. Our last day here, tomorrow we fly back to cold, wet Norway for another long winter. As usual we've had a wonderful three weeks here.

Yesterday had the strongest wind we've ever experienced here. We still went to Damnoni for lunch but it was a battle coming back! Luckily it didn't rain until the late evening.

Today is not quite so windy but I did get wet on my morning walk. It's cloudy now but expected to get a bit better later on. A shame that our last days here this year are not good for the girls to sunbathe.

Today is extremely windy! The expected rain is holding off for now although the forecast is for rain later today and tomorrow. Doesn't look like there will be a town party, at least for now.

We arrived here on Saturday and two of our party were given temporary rooms for the night at Alianthos Beach because they are fully booked. We were given rooms with a sea view for the rest of our stay so we're not complaining. We were told that many of the hotels are also fully booked for September.
The weather is fantastic for me, not too hot and some cloud cover. Very little wind. Good for walking.

We stayed in Paleochora a few years ago as well. It is lovely but there was something about it that didn't click with me. Maybe because I insist on a good sea view and it's hard to find a room with a view. Wife loved it because of all the restaurants and the fact that she didn't find any beasties in our room.

Here's another outside view. There's nowhere to hang wet clothes so we've had to improvise.

Looking into the room. The bedside lamps have USB charging ports!

Here's from inside the room. Very good soundproofed doors plus a net covered door.

Here's a picture of the 'new' Creta Mare from the outside. Looks very good. Because of the forum restrictions I'll post one pic at a time. Sorry for the small size, only 128k max allowed.

There's still a problem with ants. The wife, being a Norwegian, freaked out and spent the first ten minutes hunting and killing them on the balcony. She then moved indoors and started moving furniture around. Found some near the balcony door so freaked out even more and continued her killing spree. She's gone home now leaving me and the ants in peace for two more weeks.

When I got up this morning and looked out from the balcony thers was a fog bank from the left all the way to Souda. Couldn't see Gavdos. As I walked towards Souda it started coming in to land. Quite spectacular.  There were still lots of people Sunbathing on the beach (fogbathing?). By the time I got back to Creta Mare it was completely blanketed in Fog. Could still see the sun, though.
