Announcements / Website search
« on: November 06, 2002, 11:55:41 PM »
Andy and I have been working on getting a search function working on the site.
There's still a litttle 'fine tuning' to do, but there is a new facility live now.

Just go to the front page, and there's an input box. Key in a topic you are interested in, and press the search button. You'll get a page of links on that topic! (If you click on the home button above, you'll be there!

I have updated the notes on phoning Plakias on the website. Go to FAQs page and click on 'Plakias telephone numbers'.

I would appreciate any updates and additions to this list.

Plakias / Phoning Plakias
« on: November 06, 2002, 01:00:40 PM »
I thought I would pass on this information I picked up from the Interkriti website.

Just to make you aware that Greek phone numbers are changing over the next few months!

FROM SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3 2002:
If you want to call landline numbers in Greece, you should replace the current (0) with 2, i.e. if the number is currently 0030 (0) xxx xxxxxx you will need to dial 0030 2 xxx xxxxxx.

Examples:
NOW 0030 8220 12345
NEW 0030 28220 12345

-----

FROM SUNDAY JANUARY 19 2003:
If you want to call mobile numbers in Greece, you should replace the current (0) with 6, i.e. if the number is 0030 (0)xx xxx xxxx you will need to dial 0030 6xx xxx xxxx.

Examples:
NOW 0030 97 123 4567
NEW 0030 697 123 4567

Plase tell your friends, who will need to change ALL their records for landlines and mobiles

More information is available from the OTE website - Click Here

So, as far as I can see, if you wanted to ring Anso Travel from the UK, you would need to dial 0030 28320 31712.

I know people who go to Plakias flight only, and make their own accommodation and transfer arrangements are beginning to make thier bookings now. Please let me know how it goes.

Gossip / Trial
« on: November 06, 2002, 11:09:21 AM »
Maybe Andy, - the Greek  Police are often regarded as a little 'heavy handed'. But I wonder if it's the British media who are generating the idea that this is a miscarriage of justice. Because the planespotters wouldn't be treated in this manner at home, they assume that the Greeks have got it wrong.

What do you think about this trial in Greece then?
Personally, I've never seen a Greek airport without strict warnings restricting photography etc. All air force areas are clearly marked, and secure. Isn't it obvious that the authorities are concerned about possible spying?
I don't like to see the innocent locked up - but I suspect they were asking for trouble!

We'll probably go back to Dora next year too - just feels like home!

Keep uo the good work on the sites too Gerald - Plants and Lizards are fascinating sites, so I thought I'd pop the links in here as well.

Looking forward to next years updates!

Gossip / Euro
« on: November 04, 2002, 05:53:19 PM »
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the good wishes - and I have to admit it wouldn't have happened without the help of Andy, the other board Administrator. You'll find his introduction in the Gossip forum of Ostraco's Bar.

I had a week in Kefalonia - where I actually first used the Euro - and I would agree that prices are higher there. Nice island though! They certainly have made the most of Captain K - though having seen the film, it was interesting to visit some of the locations they used.

Totally agree about exchange rates, and I do feel that we can embrace the Euro, and all it's advantages without loosing our National identity. After all - we can all tell the French from the Gremans when we meet them abroad!

Nothing would give me great pleasure than buying you a Mythos or 2 Barny. We'll make it one day!
When you've got your 2003 bookings sorted, pop them on the calender - at least we'll know who's in town, and when!

Hi Ron,

Good to see you here! I understand the Cretan bug all too well!

No - I don't mind a little advertising - in fact, I have been asked about buying property in Crete several times - so now I can tell people who to contact!

Special request: if any peoperty become available in the Plakias area, whould you make a brief posting here to let everyone know? I for one have been dreaming about buying something there for years

Thanks for your good wishes - and yes - love to share a raki or two with you. Watch the board: you'll see when I'll be in Crete next.

Plakias / Easter
« on: November 04, 2002, 04:12:31 PM »
I see Easter is late again this year in Greece - April 27th. This is just before the season starts - but Olympic are taking bookings from the first week in April on some of their properties.

Easter is the big festival throughout Greece - anyone been - or planning on going?

BTW - there's some great pics from Ken & Kathy taken while they were there for Easter this year. Pop into Ostraco's Bar to find the link!

Thanks for the pics - sure brings back memories of standing in the sun on Plakias beach talking about your Easter trip. Sure looks as if you had a good time - and the weather looks (mostly) very good.
I've only been in Plakias once for Easter - but had a great time then. I vividly remember Mikalis from Ostraco running arond in the road with a huge flare!

and Andy - thanks for the direct link!

Hey Ken and Kathy,
It's good to see you both on the board!
Yep - it was good to see you in Plakias last year - and I even beat you to the beach (once!) Like me, you always found your favourite spot!
I went home well relaxed thanks, buy with a lot of reluctance - it gets harder to return home every year! Oh for early retirement!

Holiday Companies / 2003 offerings
« on: November 04, 2002, 03:17:30 PM »
I wish I could plan so far ahead!
Living in Plymouh, we don't have a good airport near us - usually our options are restricted to Gatwick - although there do seem to be some changes afoot for this year, especially if we go flight only.
We've found in the past that May holidays are reasonable, and we couldn't improve on the price by booking flights, rooms and transfers for ourselves. The September prices are such that we are thinking about a go it alone booking this year - I'll let you know - and will probably for asking for advice on the board if that's what we decide to do.

Holiday Companies / Reps
« on: November 04, 2002, 03:08:37 PM »
I couldn't agree more John. Let's hope First Choice have learned their lesson for next year! I did meet the Rotweiller a few times - and once, she was sober.

The Olympic rep was no better - several times she joined us, uninvited, while we were out in the evenings. Neither I, or any of the bar staff I talked too EVER saw her pay for a drink! (and she got through loads!). To be fair to Olympic, who have always been good in the past, I have decided to write to their Customer Services Department with my opinions.

I don't go to Welcome meetings any more: like you, I know where the beach is - and I also know that if I want to do an excursion, I can usually get a better price - or more convenient days/times by looking around at the other options offered in town. Must admit though, I haven't been ticked of for it yet! We know they are not well paid, and supplement their income with commission on excursions, car hire etc.: if they are good, for the sake of a few Euros, I use these services - but I didn't this year.

PlakChat / Sharron and Yannis
« on: November 03, 2002, 10:35:45 PM »
I know so many people drop in to see Sharron and Yannis when they are in town. I spent many a night with them in September. Both are doing well, and enjoying being parents. Little Manolis is doing well too - I think he's going to be a big lad when he grows up, and his dancing skills suggest he's going to be as keen on music as his Dad!
There's a new pic of Manolis on the site News page - don't take any notice of the strange man!
I know there's an Internet connection in Ostraco - but DON'T ask for Sharron's email address - she still hasn't got her head around using it.
