Title: Any changes ?
Post by: Daniel on May 18, 2014, 04:59:33 PM
We are due back in Plakias on the 29th May for 2 weeks for our regular summer "fix"
Car booked from the airport and room with George at Creta Mere sorted out (I think !!).

From those who have been there earlier in May, are there any major changes from 2013 ?

I know things don't change at any great pace in the village but are all the same tavernas open and do any of them have changes in staff/owners ?

Is Sonja still at Harakas ?

Yes, Sonja is still at Harakas, and for reasons of sentiment we always return at least once per holiday.

Plakias seemed a little quiet (May 2nd to 13th).

The Gavdos ferry in the harbour had gone, which is a bit of a shame, although something of that size and a likely profit always seemed a little optimistic to me, at least if Gavdos excursions were to be its major source of income. Does anyone else have more information on possible ferry services from the harbour?

Someone now in Plakias has just sent me a video of the newly fitted out interior of Medousa Restaurant. Incredible. Do pack your dinner jacket :)))

Yes, we tried a couple of weeks ago. Very nice, very good service and food, good value, even the loos are swanky; just not sure if it is what I look for in Plakias. Still, know to take DJ next time!

We ate there last night and it is very nicely done out, good food, reasonable prices as well. Glad to say not a dinner jacket in sight. At the start of the meal we were served bread with two dips. One of these was a garlic spread, but the other one was nuclear pink in colour and of an indeterminate taste. Does anyone know what it is, or supposed to be?

Just a guess - if it's pink it's probably taramasalata.

It is certainly not taramasalata, it's a slightly darker and practically luminescent dark pink in colour. The taste is not particularly strong, and I couldn't quite recognise it. Just wondered if anyone else knew what it was.

No further suggestions here then - but maybe I'll try it out in September..........

Yes, I think so. I prefer the 'simpler' Taverna feel.

We have eaten in the Medousa every night so far during our stay. In our view, the best food in Plakias. The "Pink" starter was puréed beetroot with yoghurt and olive oil.

If you like beetroot, then go to Xezonis and order the beetroot salad - simply the best I have ever tasted anywhere. If you can be bothered, go to Elia restaurant in Sellia. Outstanding food, makes the trip worthwhile, their lamb in the oven dishes are way above what you would normally expect in a Greek restaurant. Stunning menu but remember to check out the blackboard for the days choices. So many restaurants, so little time.......

On another subject, photos earlier in the year showing storm damage to the tree at the far end of the "far end" were misleading. Although it is slightly smaller than last year, and one main branch is being propped up, it still provides a substantial amount of shade at that end of the beach. Well done to those who rescued it.

I love beetroot.  Where is Xezonis?  A few years ago I had a beetroot salad at Kastro, and thought that it was quite nice.

Xezonis is the kafenion on the same street as Minoiko and OPAP lottery shop. Do not attempt to drive anywhere after eating here as they can be somewhat liberal with the Raki. Greek spelling is ξεζωνης.

Back to the original topic, it looks like the old Paralia club is going to open again as there seems to be a fair bit of work going on in the original building and across the road where a new deck, complete with massive umbrella is taking shape. Also another music bar ( I use the term loosely ) virtually opposite Gio Mas is open with comfortable looking seats which means the drinks will be pricey. Does being cynical progress with years? I have to report that most people here are now younger than me which is utterly depressing. Obviously though, my tastes are much more refined than theirs, meaning I can take the moral high ground. Ahhh that's better.

As Kenny Everett said, "How dare you be so young!".

Xezonis, Ah, that clears up something for me.  We have always known it as just"the Kafenion" as we could not pronounce the Greek name.  We have eaten there many times over the years and found it to be amongst the best tavernas in Plakias, really good food and a very nice family.  Cant wait to get back there next Tuesday!!   ;)

Every time we eat there, there is always a Greek family eating there too, which speaks volumes for me. It is not a fine dining experience, but if you want to experience Cretan hospitality at it's best, then I believe this is the best place to eat in Plakias. Nikos ( both of them ) are friendly and attentive, and if you catch them on a night when they are being generous with the Raki you will struggle to walk back to your rooms in a straight line. I was a victim of this hospitality myself last night and went to bed very contented with this little corner of the world. A bottle of water and some paksikadia are supplied with a dip before you order anything, free of charge, and the dip is delicious. Free water melon or cake is offered at the end of the meal, again free of charge. The prices are very competitive which is another good reason not to miss out on this place when you are here.

Ah, good.  Another (new) place to check out this year.  So, although this is a kafeinon, they serve meals here?  And what is paksikadia?

Hi Noopsy,

It is open all day, and serves different purposes at different times of day. It is definitely a place where locals eats, drink and chat, and is one of our favourites. I think you probably know paximidakia - dry bread. Perhaps we'll see you there in August.
