The boy with the flag looks like a KKK member :)
These things are absolutely everywhere you go nowadays and I must confess I fail to see the attraction. If you were climbing hills somewhere you used to be able to follow the mini cairns or painted rocks to reach your destination. If you go down the gorge to St Anthony's there are literally hundreds of them at the waterfall area. I fail to see the attraction myself, but perhaps that conclusion arrives with a certain age.

Where to eat...or not! / Paligremnos
« on: October 15, 2014, 08:53:08 PM »
For as many times as we have stayed in Plakias, tonight was our first ever time at Paligremnos. It was simply fantastic, we both had dishes from the specials, and tasted some of the most succulent pork I have ever had. We will certainly visit again before we leave. A nice setting, friendly staff, wonderful food and good prices. If you have never ventured along there before, then go, you will not be disappointed.

No doubt we will probably give it another go next year - if my wife's calmed down by then :)

Interesting to note that no one else has mentioned this restaurant since my last post, but we had a bit of a disaster there last night. My wife ordered the mousaka which was served up cold. She informed the waiter who took it back to the kitchen. About 5 minutes or so later, the dish was placed on the table again and this time although a bit hotter, it had been drowned round the edges with paprika. I took a taste myself as I found my wife's statement quite astounding. I have no idea as to why someone would do this, safe to say we won't be eating there again in the future.

We have never eaten there purely because of the girls standing outside trying to coax you in. The same applies to the Gorgona and most of them at that location. In my opinion, if they need someone to tell you it's good, it isn't.

Ate there a couple of times and would certainly go back - they are friendly, as Manousos went out of his way to apologise for the place being so busy that he didn't have time for a chat. Having said this, there are better tavernas if you like fish :)

Plakias / Re: Loutro

Terrible to think something like this can happen to a couple who were just out enjoying their life whilst on holiday. We do like getting out and about but know our limitations only too well. Thoughts are with this poor family at this tragic time.

That sounds promising although we intend to stay at least one night in Loutro. Will have to keep an eye on the weather as we don't want to stay a week if it gets windy!

Plakias / Loutro
« on: August 27, 2014, 08:18:17 PM »
Are there ferries that go from Sfakia to Loutro in October? Most timetables seem to expire in September although I imagine there must still be trips available to supply the locals that live there. Anyone been in October, and if so can you recommend accommodation there.

Looking forward to October again this year, as was mentioned the weather last year was fantastic. It is Europe and it is October but the chance you take is reflected in the price. If it's the amenities you are worried about, then everything is still open for business. Obviously some bus journeys and boat trips may well have finished as these tend to be driven by passenger numbers.

Plakias / Re: Myrthios via old Mill

Don't recall seeing too many myself but I'll double check again in October.

Oh, if anyone is doing Timios Stavros could they take some blue paint with them and finish the painted rocks on both sides? Going up is quite easy to follow, but on the way down you can't see the painted rocks and end up half running as your legs take a life of their own and attempt to out do Usain Bolt style speeds, sending you sideways whilst making vocal emissions along the lines of  "oh sh....." whilst your arms do a good charade impersonation of a windmill and you mutter various expletives much to the amusement of those on their way up. It is not dignified and I detest that it doesn't happen to younger people. Rant over.

Plakias / Re: Weather now - windy ?
« on: August 19, 2014, 11:14:03 AM »
Most people were in shock as it rarely rains in August.

It rained in early June this year and one local was saying he'd been there for 13 years and it was a first for him. Hope it stays dry in October though.....

Gossip / Re: i-Greeks
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:44:58 PM »
I suppose it seemed reasonable to let the ancient Greeks have the wheel, but then some idiot let them have the infernal combustion injun,
What I want to know is, which sadomasochist also allowed them to have the Mobile phone?

I used to love the old two stroke engines that seemed to power everything Greek back in the day. Fishing boats and the old three wheeled farmers contraptions when the engine fires once every three lamp posts. As for mobile phones, the Greeks are the only people I have seen using them whilst riding their bike/mopeds and smoking at the same time. Still not figured out what they do with their coffee whilst carrying out this manoeuvre.....

Plakias / Re: Best beaches, what's yours ?
« on: August 03, 2014, 02:40:10 PM »

Incidentally, does anyone know what is happening with the beach in the cove beyond Souda? There is some sort of pre-fab building there, some old wooden chairs, and it looks like somebody has set-up a handful of parasols, judging by the concrete 'buckets' and hollow poles sticking out of the top.

Is it only a matter of time before Souda becomes a small resort in its own right? It has expanded, albeit very slowly, over the years.

Richard

Do you mean Pefkias beach? Don't recall seeing anything there in May, but will be sure to check it out again in October. Wouldn't have thought it would be busy enough to warrant putting anything there, but time will tell.

Where to go / Old bridge
« on: July 24, 2014, 12:09:17 PM »
I saw a walking tour advertised at one of the travel agencies that had photo's of an old multi arched bridge which seemed to have been made using red stones. Does anyone know where this is, and more importantly, can we strike out from Plakias itself on foot, or do you have to drive somewhere first?
