Plakias / Re: Rain?
« on: June 01, 2017, 08:16:37 PM »
We stayed May 19th - Jun 1st, and had more rain than all other visits over 15 years combined. It was torrential on a couple of days, although not for too long, particularly over the last weekend.

That said, it was 'sort of' quite nice to just sit and relax rather than deciding what to do, and except for Sunday the rain wasn't continuous and we had some sun. Leaving this morning, it was getting too hot for us, heading towards 30C.

We also took advantage of the BA chaos last weekend to obtain a refund and stay 2 days longer than we'd planned - our apartment at Skinos was, by chance, available, and we had two lovely sunny days this week, which were not too hot, and a pleasant breeze to boot.

Had pleasant and interesting conversation with Zak from Heraklion - Plakias and return. Nice chap. Bang on time and would recommend on that basis. Do our own thing these days and better than the 'interesting' Olympic magical mystery tour

I arrive 30 Apr and would be happy to make up one of the fifteen over the following week if needed - I've always wanted to visit Gavdos.

Hope it doesn't spoil Gio Ma if so, it is my favourite taverna.

Still, resistance is futile...

Many thanks, everyone, for the informative, considered, and helpful replies. I couldn't arrange a trip in the end for health reasons, but am now seriously thinking of doing so at a similar time next year, which I wouldn't have thought about otherwise.

Any 'negatives' pointed out seem to be positive for me and my wife, the reason we like the place but accentuated!

Well, fingers crossed.

Best wishes to all, Richard

Thanks Ostraco - I believe that the sea is actually at its warmest in November!
I don't bother with sunbeds so not a problem. As long as there's somewhere to eat-out if I feel like it, or buy food to eat in, then all is good.

I am currently off work, while I recuperate from a long-term illness, and am considering spending a few days in Plakias since I have the opportunity.

I'd very much appreciate any thoughts based on personal experience. I can check the likely weather on Google, but I am thinking more about the general 'feel', compared to May or September when I usually visit, for example which tavernas may be open, how busy is it (quiet I'd guess, but I don't know), and any other comments really.

I've been travelling to Plakias for over 20 years - yes, I know, some of you will think that I'm a mere newcomer :) - and I suppose I am just trying to avoid being disappointed for the first time.

Many thanks, Richard

Appreciate the sentiment of the initial post, very much, but also agree with the 'BUT' comments in the post above.

For example, my wife and I did make the walk to Myrthios via the mill this year (we are still just about OK physically unless my gout flares up), but at times it felt like we were trespassers. I don't really like the new tavernas in Sellia and Myrthios, either. I preferred the dirt-track walk to Souda and remember the track beyond being created with some sadness.

Despite the changes, I presented at a conference in Athens earlier this year, and without wanting to criticise anyone Athenian, or working in Athens, I'd forgotten just how friendly and welcoming Plakias is.

The harbour is almost needless. Wasted money. I used to look at the house just above it, and think what a perfect place to live as nobody could spoil the view, no room for a road in front of it on an escarpment. Imagined that it could be the sort of place that I'd retire to. Silly me!

I have visited Plakias for the last 21 years and hope to return next year. Hope I am not disappointed.

Sorry Barny, not having a pop at anyone, just a bit depressed about the whole thing, whichever side you back.

I'd say about 10 mins from memory, although we strolled down.

We stopped for a 'proper' look for the first time in twenty years this May. Fantastic displays by the Lammergeiers and some smaller raptors, pigeons rather sensibly sticking to the base of the gorge! My wife eventually dragged me away but I could have watched all day.

Saw a young Golden Eagle here also a couple of years ago. I have seen images of these things but the reality is so much more striking - their wings are huge!

As suggested above, well worth a look if this is your thing.
