PlakChat / Sunloungers and Parasols

I am contemplating visiting Plakias from the 4th October for 14 days.  It will be the first time to Plakias for 3 years having been many times before  ( always the last 2 weeks in May and the last 2 weeks in September.

I have never been to Plakias in October before and my question is,  does anyone know if the sunloungers and parasols at the " farend " will be operating throughout October ?

We were there for a week mid-October last year and the loungers and brollies were all there.

The solution is to go at the end of July/August...there is no competition for sun loungers on the beach.

I couldn't believe it was so quiet on the beach so I am going again next year at the same time-idyllic.

I spoke to the guy who looks after the loungers at the far end and he said that his busiest time is always September because the place is full of brits and there is usually a mad scramble for sun loungers...

All true - and we've been to Plakias in May, June, July and October previously but (as we found this year) September is definitely the best for sea and air temperature. October - if the weather's good, is great - we had the entire tree area to ourselves!

Just back from Plakias and a bit saddened to see that the practice of trying to pre-book loungers/brollies has now crept from Germany to Britain with Brits seeking to secure their place in the sun by 'booking' loungers on Plakias beach.

Dear oh dear.

Hi,

We're going to Plakias in September and we were thinking of either hiring a car to get us from Iraklion to Plakias and/or doing the same in reverse at the end of the hol to get us to the airport, rather than risk the long coach trip.

Does anyone know of firms at the airport that are happy for the car to be 'returned' to an office in Plakias and of any Plakias car companies who are happy for the car to be left at the airport?

We have used Anso travel for a number of years for hiring a car on a 3+3 day deal, picking up the car at the airport and leaving it at the Anso office in Plakias 3 days later and then doing the reverse at the end of the holiday.  The rates are competitive - contact them on www.ansotravel.com for a quote.

Thanks - that's very useful info.

We are also going to Plakias in September (27th) and have arranged for a car to be at the airport on our arrival (3am in the morning) and returned by us at the airport at a similar time at the end of the holiday. There are probably a few companies who will do this.

In Plakias itself there is the travel agent Anso from whom we have hired cars (not from the airport though) and I understand they will meet you at airport with car and let you take it back to airport.

Have a look at www.ansotravel.com   email apap@net.forthnet.gr

Last year and this year we were/are with caravel who are going to meet us at Heraklion airport with a car. They were slightly cheaper than Anso and very efficient. offering full waiver insurance etc. etc.

Have a look at [a href=\"http://www.caravel.gr]http://www.caravel.gr[/url] email info@caravel.gr

I have been told on this forum that anso might allow you to hire for 3 days at beginning of holiday and 3 days at end of holiday (useful for 2 week stay) in order to cover the transfer to/from airport. This might be no more expensive than taxi transfer.

I don't think that there will be anyone who will hire a car simply to/from airport to/from Plakias. A taxi should be cheaper than that action even if it was possible. You can hire a car for about 150 euro per week which is not far short of the return taxi fare, so if you make good use of it during your stay (we do) then it represents good value.

We are travelling independently this year (first time for that) but on previous years we never found the transfers to be all that horrific. There are rumours about this years transfers being a bit iffy. We are now very familiar (not complacent) with  driving in Crete but if it is your first time then driving at night (I assume) from Heraklion to Plakias, though easy enough for us (!!!) may not be the easiest of tasks for some.

Hope the above helps

Thanks - that's very useful. We have no problem with driving in Crete and this sounds like a a good work-around.
