Yes we did notice the Fish and Chip shop in Plakias and thought how sad that someone might even think we were even slightly interested in frequenting it

[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3733\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Strange as it may seem - that Plakias fish and chip shop is perhaps the one fish and chip shop in Crete that really is well worth a visit.

I've walked passd this chippy on numerous occations, and thought 'no way I'm going in there' but on your recommendation John I might, just might, give it a try.
Do you, or anyone, have any recommendations for the best English breakfast in town? I don't usually bother, but have been told I should start!

on the subject of breakfast - I used to like the "Cretan omelette" with feta cheese and tomato, I think it was at the Livicon.  Which was also my favourite spot for a sundowner.

Anyone ever spent the night at Omalos before walking the Gorge?

I'm quite tempted to try it this year.  According to the Rough Guide accommodation should be plentiful and cheap, mostly due to the fact that hardly anyone stays there.

We did originaly plan to stay at Omalos, but like Harribobs says we found the bus option better as we stayed in Sougia for several days.
Looked a bit of a dismal place compared to a good evening down in Sougia on the night before our trek
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3751\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Yes, Sougia's a pleasant place to while away a few days - a bit low-key compared to Plakias but that's part of its charm.

I hadn't actually thought of starting from Sougia, I've always got the dawn bus from Chania in previous years.  Thanks for the tip.

Sorry to Mike G and John R, no offence was meant.

My remarks were just meant as an advice to some.

I didn't take offence LoukaFran. The British fish and chip brigade is a reality but we, thankfully, saw none of it in Plakias. They were probably in Malia, Kavos, Faliraki, or Laganas. Probably followed by a deep fried Mars bar, not that I have ever encountered one.

Each to his own though.

Deep fried Mars bar is really a Scottish speciality - I've seen them on sale in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Here in Brighton you can get deep-fried pizza, except we call it "pizza frittata"...

sorry, this is getting a bit off-topic

There is no sign of any buses between Plakias and Chora Sfakion as there used to be.

This is bad news.  Makes exploring the south-west coast from Plakias pretty challenging for those of us who don't drive.  I wonder if they might re-introduce it on the summer timetable? (which hasn't yet been posted on the website.)

We are arriving in  myrthos.. on the 5th of july and would really like to walk the samaria gorge, are there any excursions from plakios !!
We will have a car but looking at the various websites it seems that getting back to the starting point would be a real problem.

Getting back to the start would indeed be a problem.  The only ways I can think of are:

- walk  back up

- get a boat from Ayia Roumeli (bottom of the gorge) to Souyia or Paleochora, spend the night there and get the early morning bus (between 6 and 7 am) which supposedly goes to Omalos, a mere 5km from the entrance to the gorge.

You might be better off doing it on an excursion from Yeoryoupolis (sp?) as it's a fair bit closer to the start.

We can also post a vote for the Souvlaki House - we arrived at 11.30pm, with the memories of the in-flight meal thankfully fading. The veggie and souvlaki pittas were very cheap and very tasty.
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=1150\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

well that's one thing that's obviously improved - in my day the "veggie pita" consisted entirely of chips (seriously) ...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a vegetarian?  (who has been known to eat fish)

Hi all

I'm planning to arrive in Plakias on Saturday morning (July 9th) - what's availability of accommodation likely to be?  I've always just found a place when I got there in the past, but haven't visited in July before.

thanks

One of the blights of Damnoni was the awful derelict hotel (was it called the minoan princess or summat?)

well....it's gone,

now the bad news, i heard that it's been demolished so that Hapimag can extend their time shares further
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3438\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

It was called the Minoan Prince.

Did it ever actually open?  I've only ever seen it in a derelict state.

hi, welcome to the forum

well for my 2d i would say make sure the price quoted for the flights includes airport taxes

and consider getting a cheap (late) deal to (say) malia/hersonnisos, as the package may well be cheaper than a flight only (obviously you ignore the accomodation)
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3276\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

I just got a cheap charter flight to Heraklion via Olympic's website, under Special Offers.  They do flight-only deals.  Much cheaper than anything I found on Expedia or lastminute.com for instance, including taxes and other extras.

The translation of Mikro Amoudi and Amoudaki is the same thing: "Small Amoudi", so the two names mean the same thing and probably are both used. I like the photograph of it as there seem to be no ranks of umbrellas. I hope that it's still like that when I arrive around about the 21st June (I am working on Greek time!)

Greecemad
[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=3496\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Well I guess you've found out by now ... when I was last there back in the late 20th century they had installed sunbeds, umbrellas and even a shower, not at all like the old days ...

BTW the description of this beach in the Rough Guide to Crete seems unchanged from the first edition of the Rough Guide to Greece, 1980-something, even down to the "Nivea beach balls".  Anyone ever spotted one of them?

Plakias / Nudist beaches

How is Frangokastello beach these days?  Not exactly local to Plakias but on the same side of the island at least.

Last time I visited (over 10 years ago) it was totally deserted apart from half a dozen unclothed folk at the far end.  Totally undeveloped, hundreds of metres of sand-dunes.

BTW I also met a couple who'd been stuck there for three days through failing to guess the time the bus would turn up ...
