Plakias / Christmas
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:05:21 PM »
Hi all,

Christmas greetings from Plakias when only two days to Christmas. My wife arrived two weeks ago and she had some rain and thunder now and then during these weeks, but mostly sunny and not to windy. So far this week the weather has been a lot better than the same week last year and the forcast gives hope for remaining good during Christmas.

Here are som pictures to keep your memories alive

I know exactly how you feel.

I never thought I would find a place I wanted to visit all the time that felt like home but it happened

Rowena

Hear, hear.

We feel exactly the same. Wonderful place all year around.
Our house felt at home from the very first moment. Thinking of it at least once every day.
Have to wait until Christmas for next visit though.

PlakChat / 2009 season

Hello,

I agree that Taxi 4 You and especially Zak is a very good choise. At a reasonable price he just not only pick you up on time, he also give you a good and safe drive.
My wife  has tried a unknown taxi from Rethymon to Plakias once. It was cheap and the fastest drive so far, and new record on the distance - but it certainly did not feel good and safe!

Plakias / Bus trips
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:38:08 PM »
Hi,

last year the fee was 4.20 Euro from Plakias to Rethymno. The Bus station is on the west side of Rethymno, but there is a bus stop at the square on the east side of the town park.
Taxi will cost apx 30 Euro. But I guess you can bargin. In March Cina hade to take a taxi because the bus company does not allowe pets inside. The have to go in the luggage compartment!!
The first taxi she asked wantet 40 Euro but next charged only 30 Euro. But on the other hand he drove much faster!
New record on the distance.

If you like walking, then, although there's plenty you can do without taking the car, it's worth driving west to the base of the Imbros gorge, walking up, then getting a taxi down (20 Euro) - or, you can do it the other way round.  A bit further afield, there's the Amari valley which is quite picturesque.
Another nice tour is to drive through Kotsifou Gorge to the Lappa area with its ancient village Argiroupolis. Take a walk inside the village, talk with the "tourist man" in the small shop in the vault of the old city gate. He will be happy to show you several interesting places just nearby to visit.
Just downside the village there is a lot of natural water springs. A lot of remainings of old watermills and canals as well, and just among the running water there are several tavernas. Sounds very touristic, and of course it is, but in a hot summer day it is really cooling to sit down for a short rest and perhaps an Amstel.

It is about an hours drive from Plakias and you can choose another way back to Kotsifou or, a bit longer though, go over the mountains to the road to Chora Sfakia.
