Could anyone who has been to Plakias recently and , like me , regards the Lysseos as a really good restaurant , help to whet my appetite . Is the food there as good as ever ? Any notgable additions to the menu or just the usual excellent dishes - the roasts , lamb in the oven , pork afelia , chicken skordata , duck a l'orange , and above all , kleftiko - by far the best kleftiko i have had because it is the Cypriot version and not the Greek one = the chef is a Cypriot
Three weeks tonight and I will be sampling my first meal there = and be spoilt for choice

Hi Roger if the food is as good as you say my Wife and I will probably see you in the Lysseos when you arrive.
Are you travelling alone or accompanied?
We arrive on the 15th and rather late in the evening I suspect.
Regards
John

I have been to Lysseios a few weeks ago - and I loved it again.

my turn to be the dissenting voice on this thread (sorry uli, ems and roger), although i must say mandy really likes Lysseos, i don't rate it, i find the portion sizes too small, the food a little boring and the (female) staff indifferent to unfriendly

We went for the first time last year and we rated it average. Not writing it off after one go though, will try it again this year.
Any dishes I should try in particular?

Ploppy, try the ones mentioned earlier in this thread, particularly kleftiko and pork afelia.

OK cheers John. Forgive me my laziness in not reading the rest of the thread

I'll second that!
I even tried the baby goat last year and it was superb, never had a bad meal in there.
Sorry Chris, the female staff ie Lito is a wonderful lady, as is Christina in Harakas, always had time for a chat and a laugh, perhaps we just 'clicked'

Lysseos is one of the places we eat at very frequently.
The food is always hot and cooked to perfection - my favourite being the smoked pork cutlet. I agree with George about Lito too - she rules the place with a first of iron, speaks to most customers in their own language, and is always happy to tell you about the dishes and make suggestions. Her wicked sense of humour makes the place special!

Have just spent the last 14 nights in Lysseos and managed a different main course every night - every one deliciousl - don't know how many litres of wine I've consumed there over the last 18 years or so. As you say Lito is very special lady with a wicked sense of humour.
-
I only had one disappointment this year and unfortunately it was at the Lysseous. I usually adore the kleftico there and always get my nose ready when opening the foil. It just didn't happen for me this year. Saying that everything else was to it's usual perfection, and Lito her usual self.
Best meal overal and memorable, got to be the Spicey Pork Meze at Medusa, sensational!

I had the kleftiko at the Lysseos also. Having read that this was Cypriot style on the Forum, I was not surprised it was not the same as the Greek cooking I am used to, but had no reference point for comparison. The impression I had was it lacked the garlic hammer blow of the Greek version, and so, seemed a little bland.
Agree that overall the Lysseos food is blinding.

On recent visits to Plakias (last was June 2005), I've rarely eaten anywhere else but Lysseos. The food's always great, and Lito is superb at languages.
Somehow they seem to have less custom than they used to. I can remember years when they used to pack more tables in and they were full. I notice that they still have gas lanterns - I can remember when they had to be used fairly regular - power cuts were a feature of going to Greek islands.

Ah the good old days, I remember when you didn't go out out at night without a torch.
There were a couple of power cuts while I was there this year and the gas lamps were utilised in the Lysseos. The days of romantic candles are well gone.

I would have to agree with this opinion, having ate there once, during the last week, our party were mot impressed

well it was very full most nights this year, we ate there once and we enjoyed it, i had a steak (which was pretty good) and mandy had her fav, the pork aphelia ( she loved it)
btw they're not gas lanterns, they are gas heaters! you can pick them up pretty cheap these days and they can extend those nights in the garden

Harribobs,
I have just returned from Plakias and I will agree with you that they were busier than I remembered from the last time I was there, but I think Plakias in general was busier - it may be because there are now a lot of people from the Czech Republic there (I assume they are all Czech anyway - I couldn't recognise the language that a lot of them were speaking) - at least a couple of the bars had young Czechs working there and they couldn't understand my Greek.
Lysseos does have gas heaters, I think. But the gas lanterns are hanging from the roof, where the fans are. I don't they would be much good as heaters up there!

I thought they were lights too, probably because they lit them when we had a power cut last year

opps sorry i missed them!
i know there was at least one power cut while we were there but it didn't affect us

Just returned home today... its official - Lysseos does the best food in Plakias, leagues ahead of any of the others. And the service is excellent too

baby goat is indeed delicious, as is the rabbit merenge. not sure if there was anything new as such, although I tried the chicken curry this year for the first time and it was amazing. Gutted I didnt get to try the pork lemonata... or the afore mentioned gateaux!!! ... we had the same tactic as you, try everything !

I've always avoided the Curries ems, perhaps at the back of my mind they weren't Cretan, but on your recommendation I'll give it a go.

I haver never tried the curry at Lysseos - but I very rarely have curry at anything other than an indina restaurant and it seems slightly od to have curry at a Greek restaurant . I doubt i will try that given the terrific choice of other dishes which i cannot get in this country
Yes I had the baby goat last year- i think it was new then - and it was excellent . Not so keen on the rabbit ramngo and from meory that is rather more expensive than most other dishes . And the duck a l'orange is really good but not often on - apparently it does not sell well which surpises me . There was a new lamb dish last year or the year before - harama i think with tomatos and onions from meory . For some reason the lamb there is always very tasty whereas i normally think of lamb as a bit bland
40 days to go - I will be a day later than you Goerge at the Lysseos because I am on a night flight so it will be wednesday night for me . So please check that the leftiko and the lamb in the oen are both on - I usually start with one of those and can never decide which one is my favourite
the starters and sweets are perhaps less adventuours than the main courses and certsainly less choice . I usully dont bother with a starter but always have a sweet - yoghourt and honey , a cake , peach melba , strawberries and cream i wish they did yoghourt and fruit but I will go for that if they close fr an evening and I have to go elsewhere

Well that's it then, Chicken Curry at the top of the list as I've never tried it in Plakias.

Does your PC have a spell check?

There are lots of comments on this thread and others about tavernas but in the "Article System" there are no reviews for 2007. For new forum members this could be a useful resource and even for us regular visitors it gives encouragement to try tavernas other than our favourites of previous years. Ditto accommodation.
Paul (Ploppy), how about another "Your Forum Needs You" appeal for reviews. If everyone who has been this year were to write some it would make a good collection.

I have been to Lysseos in Oct. 2007 - and again: It was fantastic!!!
My favorite is the chicken in wineleaves - but whatever I ever ordered - it was always a big pleasure to have my dinner there.

I am going to be the lone dissenting voice on this issue.
The Chicken Curry that I had at Lysseos was certainly the most oddest 'curry' that I have ever encountered (maybe they sent out the wrong food?).
It consisted of a whole chicken leg sticking up in a (very) mildly spiced stock and some cooked vegetables.
Certainly worth going for if you like a surprise with your curry.
The surprise being that there is no curry in it though...

Hi Steve
I haven't tried the chicken curry yet but P&D's daughter Tracy did last year and I must admit it did look a bit odd when it turned up. As you said it looks nothing like a curry but she ate it and said it was nice. So perhaps I'll give it a try.
Never had a bad meal in Lysseous, and will keep going back if only to see the fab Lito!!

Ethnic recipes are often adapted to suit the local palate - I remember having an Indian in Spain in a restaurant staffed by a Bangladeshi family that tasted nothing like the Bangladeshi food we have at our local Indian.

I am not a curry fan, but even I was I don't think I'd go for one at a Greek restaurant. Since Lysseos is a Cypriot restaurant I would stick to the Greek and Cypriot dishes - they are always excellent.

Back home 2 nights and missing Lysseos already. Had been fairly quiet but food wonderful as always - until next time!
-
P.S. the curry is excellent.
-
Only ate here once....the last two years we have avoided it !!!!
We were sat near the kitchens, and could constantly hear the sound of the ping of the microwave !!!! Seems to have been more empty last few years we have been past....
-
Sorry don't get your comments. Near the kitchen where exactly?
I can assure everyone that the food in Lysseos is freshly sourced and prepared and of the highest quality.
-
Lysseous has always been a favourite of mine and I am puzzled as to where one could be sat to hear the 'ping' of the microwave.
However, having returned from Plakias on 28th May following a 2 week holiday I was surprised how few tables were occupied at Lysseous each evening. In previous years it was a case if you did not get there by 7.30pm there would not be a table available.
It is not only Lysseous who seem to be suffering in the present economic climate, apart from Gorgona and Kri Kri the tavernas had significantly fewer diners than at the same time in previous years as holidaymakers seem to be opting for self catering.
-
The ping you can hear is an order bell that the kitchen uses to inform waiting staff a meal is ready. We also do not rate the Food. Small portions and we ate tastier food elsewhere. We had another try last year but it was not for us.
There were only two places that did not live up to our expectations.
I suspect one of them was because it was so quiet the kitchen was not prepared.
-
Again I don't get the comment. Never once heard a ping in all the years I have frequented the restaurant. It is such a tightly run ship with Lito at the helm that there is no need to attract the waiting staff's attention - they spend most of the time in and out of the kitchen anyway with Lito front of house. And if a dish is ready to go out and staff busy elsewhere Lucas the chef will bring it out personally. They take great pride in what they serve.
Anyway I've had my say and would suggest people give it a go and judge for themselves.
-
Can only agree 100% with you Ian!
-
To keep everyone happy, let me try the taverna again next week, and I will report how we get on!
-
I will try it a few times in August.
Barny.

The night we ate in Lysseos (see photos). We could hear a bell, when we went inside there was a small bell on the counter, we assume this is what we heard.
Happy that other people like Lysseos, I love Cypriot food after being stationed in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. My Sister has lived in Cyprus since 1974 too.
We really have tried to like the food and Lito is indeed entertaining and friendly.
There are two places in Plakias we have ever left hungry because of portion size. My other half is slim and petite and not a huge eater and whilst I am not fat I am a big bloke.
Both of us left hungry again, wanted to give it another go in case the first time was an off night.
Wish Lysseos every success and I am sure looking at how many tables Lito fills she will not miss our custom.
Everyone should make up their own minds and eat where they enjoy the food. Love everything else about the Lysseos.
Most importantly everyone have a happy time in Plakias.
-
I have also 'tried' to make Lysseos a favourite, having had it highly recommended by regulars that pre-date my firt visit to Plakis in the mid-90s, but I can't rave about it. The food is good, but always leaves me thinking that there was something that wasn't quite right.
Kleftiko is an old favourite of mine and while it was good, the local Greek resstaurant in the village that I used to live in in the UK made a better one. I like quite highly spiced food and perhaps this is where thing go wrong, for me at least. Not stupidly hot curries, but loads of flavour. But, given Kleftiko's origins perhaps this is how it really should taste.
I suspect that this is merely a case of my liking for Plakias leading to too-high expectations, but all the same... I could certainly recommend Lysseos, all the same, and given the lack of seating after 19:00, I doubt that I would need to.
Richard
-
Lysseos will certainly be near the top of our list in September. We usually go 3 or 4 times in a fortnight.
-
Pleased to report Lysseos as good as ever having spent many nights there recently. A few new dishes I was unfamiliar with but the old favourites still there.
-
Still one of the best places to eat!
-
We ate here twice in July. The veal T-bone Steak was fantastic.
Always love the food there and its great for people watching.
Don't forget you pay at the counter inside !
-
Well, I finally tried the chicken curry tonight, 25 years after it was first recommended to me.
As others have mentioned I'm not sure it truly qualifies as a curry, maybe half curry-half tagine, but it was very good. I'll certainly have it again. Otherwise, the atmosphere was as pleasant as ever and it was good to eat there again, after a couple of years. It struck me that Lysseos is was one of very few tavernas that haven't really changed over the years.
-
George?
-
Ah Lysseos, without question my favourite eating place in the whole world! Missed you so much this year.
-
Lysseos was good as ever in the last decades, but it wasn't really well frequented. Maybe you all should give it a try if not done yet.
-
i had mixed feelings initially, some years ago, largely I think because my expectations were too high because of such good reviews. The last two years, though, I?ve gone back, and really like it. Genuinely and unfussily friendly, good food, and, for me, a bit nostalgic, hasn?t changed much (if at all!) since I started visiting Plakias yearly about 20 years ago. I?d give it a try.
-
In Plakias at the moment and enjoying our evenings in Lysseos as usual. However just to advise that Lysseos will be closing at the end of the season as Lucas and Lito are retiring. Wishing them all the best but we sure will miss them. Many great memories to look back on.
-
I ate there a few times over the last two weeks. Shame to see it go. Wonder what it will be next. I liked Harakas when it was there too. I went to Antonis in the evenings, well worth it, go if you've never been.
Barny.

I was in Plakias last week, for a very short stay, and didn?t eat at Lysseos - I wish I?d read this before going! I will really miss the place.
Wasn?t everyone?s favourite, but felt the same when Harakas closed. Both were there since my first visit in ?95 (which seems a very long time ago now). I did see Sonja and Lambros early in June, having lunch on the prom, in the trees opposite Alianthos Beach hotel. Was nice to say hello!
-
Yes, hard to imagine Plakias without them. I heard that Xristos is also closing at the end of the season.
Can anyone confirm this?
