Plakias / Draught Beer

You can get draught Mythos at the Gorgona, and the Corali serves both dark and light Rethymno (bottled) beer.

When I was there last, the Lamon had draught Alfa.

Are you sure that these are 'Draught' beers and not 'keg' beer, as the Cretean climate is not really suited to a live beer?

There's several bars serving draught lager - the one next to the Dancing Bar springs to mind but forgotten its name. Also, Ostraco's  and a few others. I prefer bottled so can't comment about where's best.

The Kyma does a nice Mythos or three. See you there.

Both Ostraco and Kyma only sell keg beer or bottles, I know of no english type draught beer in Plakias.

THe Rethymno brewery sells dark and light beers but when I was last in Plakias only the bottled versions were available

Yes Easyride the motor/ mountain bike hire was run by a Greek/Austrian couple and is now part of Adonis empire, but I don't somehow see Adonis cycling

Odysses who ran the bike hire  near the main Anso offices was disabled and as far as I can remember he moved his buisiness to Rethymno

Several years ago I recall seeing advertised a disability group cycling club based in Rethymnon. It was organised by a chap called Odysseus who himself was an amputee.





I assume this is the same Odysseus who ran the cycle hire/tours from oppersite the 'Village store', if so perhaps Ali or Dave will have  contact details for him

Still no sign of the Gatwick-Heraklion easyJet flights going on sale. Anybody got any idea when they might or if they've scrapped the route?

Latest info is later this week probably 5th December

Summer'09 flights now on sale from £100 (inclusive) in September!

I was just about to ask if you knew when the Gatwick flights went on sale.

Having just got the money back from my credit card company after the xl affair, I've got a bit of spare cash to invest in doing the same thing all over again!

Jet2 flights also on sale from Manchester and Leeds, but airline probably not as finacially robust as Easyjet

2009 now on sale from Manchester, flights from £157 inc taxes and baggage, be quick for the bargains  

Gatwick i think will be bookable from 1/12/2008

I got quoted £305 Gatwick to Chania, Sept 01, good flight time too 06.40am.

I'm still looking and hoping that the prices will fall a bit more before I rush into anything, but I'm not holding my breath!

Where to go / Bus to Hora Sfakia

The service has restarted (as from 26/6/08) Bus leaves Plakias at 9.00am and HS at 11.00am and 17.30.
Service is 12 euro return and is expected to last until mid/late september.

Plakias / Cycling in Plakias

Yes the last stretch from the top of the gorge at Kanevos to kali sikia alwas seems very hot, as you usually lose the cooling 'breeze' after climbing the gorge. (Excellent taverna at Kanevos with typical local food [including snails] still using the 'look in the kitchen' menu system)

Flatter routes can be found by making use of the service roads alongside the aquaducts eg turn left at the top of the hill towards Mirthios and turn right to drop down to the aquaduct after about 300 meters. This will give you a virtally flat ride all the way to the main road just above Lefcogia and its nearly downhill all the way then to Plakias. The route back can be also made via Amoudi the via the headland to Damnoni leaving a small climb up to the main road

Ali (as in A & D ) has cycled in the local area with Odysses before he moved to Rethymno and proved helpful in locating the backroads route from Angouseliana to Koxare

Next time try the new Aegean flights from Stansted, they involve a transfer via Athens but you have through ticketing,and a 10.00am departure from STN and 15.00 departure from HER

I am quoted £238 return for mid June

I suppose it shouldn't come as a shock - flights changed and, surprise, surprise, it means we are travelling at less convenient times and losing 11 hours from our holiday  .
Stansted flights are quite expensive but worth it for the convenience (for us). With the Easyjet flights now, we'll put up with the extra travelling to Gatwick if it means better times and saving about £70 per person. With luck the cancellation charges won't be too high.

[We have booked already for next June with BA from Manchester & for the first time booked the same flights for some friends too typical it could all go horribly wrong now if they decide they are not operating that route any more.

Easyjets contract with Liverpool airport means that they cannot operate from Manchester , unless they can renegoate that contract. in the end it will all come down to money or a trip via Liverpool
