Hello all.
I read good and not so good things about Taverna manousos, has anyone had a meal here this year?

I've never eaten here because of the bad things I've read about this place.

Read some reports elsewhere for 2012 that people enjoyed eating here. Places and food do change. So was wondering if anyone had eaten here recently. Changes of chef can transform a place.
-
Maybe I'll risk it then, and go there one evening. (It'll reduce the number of restaurants I'll have to double-up on during my 3 week stay.)

Just returned from Plakias (yesterday) We ate at Manousos quite a few times as we did last year. The food etc was excellent, service v good and the wine and raki flowed. Really good food would recommend to all.

If this is the one behind Alianthos Gardens/Beach, near the bakery, the taverna that my wife and I call 'round the back', then we had happy experiences here 2010/11.
The service was a little slow but very, very friendly - perhaps more so than average in Plakias - and the food was certainly up to the standards that I'd expect; reasonably priced, too. The grilled meat was lovely, as were the staff.
The only reason we didn't visit this year was too much choice and too little time. We are quite sentimental about where we eat and we simply didn't discover this place until we'd been visiting Plakias for a number of years.

That illustrates a common problem Richard. There are several places that have become favourites, for any number of reasons. 3 or 4 visits to Lysseos are a must, and the same goes for the wonderful taverna in Sellia. Then there's a couple of trips to Kastro, probably just 1 visit to KriKri for a pizza and a night out in Reythimno. So there's not a lot of nights left on a 2 week holiday to take the gamble of trying something new. Having said that, I've got a few on the 'must try' list from other recent Forum postings.

Well, we will be back in September, for a little longer than in May (a last minute decision to go with Olympic, that I really regret, see rant elsewhere on this site!).
Perhaps there will be time this time after all. Can't wait either way!

anyone tried this place during 2014 ? We usually go, but havent so far, think the menu is a bit limited for our 5 year old !
-
Went in may this year and had a "very acceptable" mixed grill. It was very quite in there and the service was slow but not uncomfortably so. It was quite late in the evening however. I would go again no problem!
-
We always go at least once. It's a lovely place - very charming and always good value.
-
Agree completely with charming, there's something about the owner/staff/location that I can't quite put my finger on, but that I like a lot. Maybe they could seem a little more amateurish than staff at the water-front tavernas, with 'touts' outside the tavernas between Nufaro and Christos, although, if so, I find this more genuine, friendly, and very much preferable.
Even more charming than usual, this spring. Owner - afraid don't know his name - sat down and drank a couple of Rakis with us, and other diners, without being at all intrusive; this is something that Iamvery particular about also, where other people have 'personal space', I have a three-mile exclusion zone! Altogether, nice evening all round
Food was very good, nothing outstanding, perhaps, in a place where grilled meat is generally simple but excellent, but haven't ever been disappointed, all the same. The smell of the grilling meat itself is lovely!
Maybe a personal preference? No accounting for taste, so I won't preach, but I'll go again the next time that I'm in Plakias.

He is Manousos! Lovely family, been going for years.
-
Yes, eaten there recently. The food and service is average, and, I agree, the menu is somewhat limited.

It's true that it's unpretentious. But that, and the setting, is part of its charm.
-
Ate there a couple of times and would certainly go back - they are friendly, as Manousos went out of his way to apologise for the place being so busy that he didn't have time for a chat. Having said this, there are better tavernas if you like fish :)
-
Interesting to note that no one else has mentioned this restaurant since my last post, but we had a bit of a disaster there last night. My wife ordered the mousaka which was served up cold. She informed the waiter who took it back to the kitchen. About 5 minutes or so later, the dish was placed on the table again and this time although a bit hotter, it had been drowned round the edges with paprika. I took a taste myself as I found my wife's statement quite astounding. I have no idea as to why someone would do this, safe to say we won't be eating there again in the future.
-
I can believe that of Manouses! I like the quirkiness of the place but as Karen's a veggie, we tend to go for tavernas with etensive menus. Mind you, that didn't work out that well at Sofia's last night. I hope we'll try Manouses before we leave.
-
That seems SO unlike Manoussos.
-
End of season maybe?
-
Agree with comment above, quirky maybe, service sometimes seems a little slow, although living just outside London my standards are far from Hellenic in that sense!
Still, food always fine, simple fare but cooked very well, and Manousos always chatty (and liberal with Raki!). Being very stereotypically English, I don't like fuss or unctuous service, but here, it doesn't ever seem intrusive, rather just genuine friendliness.
Perhaps we all just have bad days. I certainly do.
Imagine that I'll head back there next year in any event, and thoroughly looking forward to it. Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit and hope that perhaps you'll give them another chance.

No doubt we will probably give it another go next year - if my wife's calmed down by then :)
-
Good :-)
-
Well, had dinner here this evening and still a fan of the place. Service still 'quirky' but not a problem at all. The raki still flows 'apres' also....
Food was fine, again. Nothing particularly special for Plakias, but good. simple food cooked well, squid starter then mixed fish.
It is also out of the worst wind that has been a bit full-on since Friday.
Might very well go again before we return home.

We will now have to wait till next year to eat there again :-)
-
We did go once again and no regrets at all. Mixed grill tasty and left me completely full!
Wish I was still there...

I think despite all the 'comments' about the place it's been going a fair few years?

I love this place and have been there off and on for well over 20 years.
Sometimes if Manoussos is a bit off colour or rushed off his feet then the service and food becomes slightly ecccentric.
Despite this they come bouncing back and after a winter break I am sure they will all reach full steam soon.
Never had a bad meal there and If I do make it to Plakias in May 2016 that is the very first place I will go to eat.
Looking forward to it already. Greek food as it should be. :)
Heather.

I never did say. We ate there twice last time we were in Plakias. Enjoyed our meals, the friendliness and the Taverna itself.
Will eat there again on our next visit.
Our favourite places are in no particular order. Minoiko, Gio-Ma, Paligremnos and Taverna Mariou.
-
Certainly agree re Gio Ma - love the place. The others we haven't tried but hope to next time.

Went to Manoussos recently and can't believe that we ignored this place for so many years.
It doesn't look up to much, but the welcome was very sincere.
The waitress was very knowledgeable about the food, the ingredients and the way it was cooked.
Food was simple but very tasty indeed.
Would recommend again.

Hi
Although this is my first post and we are relative newbies to Plakias and have only been going for the last 5 years, although we do go at least 3-4 times a year so I guess that's 15 years + in real terms IYSWIM :)
Taverna Manousos is a great place to eat, Manousos himself has goats, Chickens and lambs, he has his own fishing boat moored at the new harbour and goes out at least a couple of times a week, so the meat is always good and the fish fresh, and you know were it came from, and its all fresh not frozen.
We often go there and ask him just to give us a meze of what he has and the food just keeps coming and its always good.
It is a bit tucked away and not flash tables and décor like the new Taverna next door but for real Greek food its great, and there is always a warm welcome from him and his daughter Maria and wife Desula ( not sure about spelling ! ) , its a real family business.
As they say " You should not judge a book by its cover"
We are back (4th time this year you can`t get enough of a good thing !) end of Aug and will definitely be paying Manousos a visit !

Taverna Manoussos is one of our favourites!
