I think half has been converted to a travel agency.

I have only been there once and the portion size of the pastitsio I ordered was so small that if it had been the portion sizes that were halved, you would have needed a magnifying glass to see it.

It seems their poor standard of cuisine has finally come home to roost.

Sorry, I cannot agree with you. The portions are the same.
During our stay we spent a lot of evenings in the Harakas. It is right, Sonja and Lanbros had to reconstruct
the restaurant but the service is the same. The owner rented the other side to Anso Travel.

I am a bit late posting this, butit may be helpful to others in 2013.

Last September We decided to eat at Harakas one night and booked a table for 4 for 8pm. our friends turned up 10 mins early and already had there drinks and had ordered there starters when we arrived at 8. we then had to wait until Stephen & Martin had got there starters before she took our order. We got our drinks just as the other 2 finished there starters. there was then a long wait, and then Stephen and Martins Main course turned up. We had drunk all our wine by now so I ordered another litre to share.  Our main course arrived about 15mins later, but no wine so I reminded her that we had ordered a litre of wine but it had not turned up. it was at least 10 mins before the wine turned up. The food when we got it was ok but NOT outstanding it was also the most expensive meal of the fortnight. 6 of us went to Virisi for 3 euro's more than it cost 4 of us at Harakas!

Vrisi is in Mirthios, next to the old laundry. Quickest way there is to take the road that goes past the youth hostel and goes steeply up to Mirthios. Great food and views. Plenty of info on this forum and a link to Vrisi website.

We would just like to say to anyone holidaying in 2013 please  do not be put off by any posts for Harakas ...just go and eat there and judge for yourselves because in a 2 week holiday we choose to return there to eat 4 or 5 times at least. The service is friendly and the food has always been excellent and freshly cooked .
Trusty s experience may have been better if his friends had waited to order altogether ...it seems a little confusion or timing  issues arose from this and dosent reflect on the normally good  service that we have always  received .
We love the food at Vrisi but have never really found it too be cheaper than in Plakias ..the polite efficient friendly service from Fredi of course always added to a pleasant meal .The restaurant decor  is undoubtedly far superior to others  and you expect to pay more for this  ...

I have been using Harakas since 1989 and never had a problem. I would highly recommend the place. As for portion size, it's just the amount I need but each to their own as they say?

It was good to see the last two postings by  Ann5 & Barny  . I am all in favour of positive reviews of  tavernas  and as a result of reading some on this forum I have visited and enjoyed the experience. I worry however about any negative reviews. They are just one person’s view point and there can be numerous reasons why an evening has not turned out as well as expected. Why not just accept it and eat elsewhere. It must be particularly hard running a small business in Crete at this time & negative comments, that the owners have no means of replying to, seems to be very unfair. I for one will at least give Harakas a try out this October.

Harakas was and will be one of our favorite eating places in Plakias.

The service is first class , as is the food.

Portion size ?
Never a problem in all the times we have been there.

Sonia her husband Lambros and staff run a very well presented and well organised outfit.

Can't wait until our next Plakias "fix" at the end of May and Harakas will be one of the first places at which we eat.

Ate there last week, and it is still one of my favourite tavernas.

Owners are always friendly and give us a good welcome each year when we return to Plakias. The portion sizes are just right for me, I find too much food off-putting and wasteful; spoils the meal, fo me at least.

Just back from Plakias and our first port of call was Harakas for dinner.

As been stated, the layout of Harakas has changed over the last year.
Part of the old site was taken over by a travel company and we feared for what we may find on our visit this year.

But Sonja and Lambros were able to obtain extra footage at the other side, next to Kri Kri, so the overall size of the place has not been altered.

Now one half is under cover whilst the other half is open to the air.
We felt that this was a much better arrangement and that the changes enforced on Sonja have in fact benefitted her !!

Food , as always , was excellent.

Portion size ?
Never was or is a problem.

Service warm and welcoming.

Will always be the first place we eat at each year we return to Plakias.

And what's with all this RESERVED tables? Where are we..? London..? Every night tables booked at Harakas and other places! Really, if that's what you want then you are holidaying in the wrong country

We also agree.
It is one of the first places we re-visit when in Plakias and always eat there several times during those visits.

Whilst I understand what you're saying, it may be a little bit harsh on the poster. If they like to have an ordered and structured night out then so be it. Just a different choice after all. Personally if we're going to eat somewhere and it's full up we just go for a drink till a table is free, but that's just us. As for harakas, we ate there in June and it was fine, and we'll go there again in October.

I have been eating at the Harakas (as far as I can remember) since 1987 (I think it was operational then !). We noted the changes too but ate there last year and the year before and thoroughly intend to eat there again this year. Sonja was, as always, friendly and she explained what had happened but the tavern was always busy....we even had to reserve a table at one point at Sonja's suggestion. The food was excellent and the portions just right...didn't have any problem.

I agree that concerns should be noted but I also draw the line at posts that might impact on the local economy....praise helps a lot but criticism needs to be very carefully worded..if at all. Each to their own ...yes and, if I need to 'reserve' a table to eat where I want to eat why shouldn't I ? I have always wanted to eat at Harakas...not a problem.

Looking forward to eating at Harakas again in Sept !

We like Harakas a lot and use it as often as possible. But reserving tables could get very tedious if it catches on.

If that's the "French" place, then I give it the thumbs up - service great, portions were fine. I had the bekri meze (spicy pork- with chips AND rice) which was fab. Went back for my "last night" meal as it was my fave (although I tried the spicier Mexican pork instead - v. good too but preferred the bekri meze. I'll be returning for it again whenever next time is(???) Daza.

Not French, don't think so at least, although is in Guide du Routard; but, is Sonja Swiss French? My wife is French and I'd say that Sonja probably is French-speaking Swiss, even despite my crap French!

Cheers, Richard

I think Sonja is Greek but she was telling us that she spends a lot of time in the Winter learning new languages......17 to date I believe...which might explain why the hospitality (and he accent) is so good !

I am a little surprised that Antonis Place is not so well known by people.

As far as I know, it is not new (Barny can probably confirm that), has been there ever since my first visit, loved by my daughters for the fresh orange juice after a day on the beach.

Location on the beach front road. About, but not quite half way along towards the Paligremnos and near (before) the first beach bar. It is shown on the map, linked above.

Recommended, though from memory it is not a place to eat late into the evening - think they close about 10pm, and a bit of a shame it is tagged in a thread about another eatery.

Of course! I remember it well. Good for a beer after a day on the beach. Haven't eaten there, though. Maybe next time.
