Where to eat...or not! / Re: Kastro

Bad luck Noopsy! We're usually there in September/early October - and it's always been open then.

It's uphill, but not a difficult walk, and only takes a few minutes. It's worth it for the view over Plakias alone. I enjoy the walk back too - we usually head to Frame for an after dinner coffee.

Daza - I went to Thassos about 10 years ago and thought it was fantastic. If I didn't go to Plakias, I think Thassos would be my second choice.

Agreed. We always visit a couple of times when we are in town.

Holiday Companies / Re: Olympic-Will they give lift (Flight Only)
« on: March 18, 2013, 03:20:26 PM »
It's always worth asking! It might be worth finding out if you can pay for a transfer. I've done that in the past - but not with Olympic.
Generally holiday companies will not do 'lifts' - they say that they need a list of passengers in advance, as they are then covered for insurance.
Also, there is no set way Olympic arrange transfers. If there are a lot of people they might have a coach - otherwise they use minibuses or even taxis - whatever is cheapest!

PlakChat / Re: Car rental at Heraklion Airport
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:35:02 PM »
We've been hiring cars for our 2 week holidays for the last few years. With Olympic transfers being a nightmare, we were taking taxis. Add the cost of two airport to Plakias journeys and it's not a lot less than 2 week car hire. Having the car available makes it easy to pop up to Sellia for dinner, or nip up to Reythimno for a night out.
I usually book a few weeks before departure, and use either Holiday Autos or Rentalcars. Both are UK based, and have arrangements with various local firms so they can offer a selection and competitive prices. Last year we paid about £240 for a Golf - collected and returned to Heraklion Airport.
Prices do vary day to day, so it's worth watching the different sites.
I do check most years, but sadly I usually find that the UK sites are cheaper than using the local ones.

Having said that, if you don't intend leaving the resort, give Zak a ring for taxi transfers. Oh! - don't forget to let the reps know that you're making your own way to the resort, as otherwise they be looking for you at the airport and holding everyone else up.

Selia is well worth a visit. We always pop up several times, and had our special last night meal there last year. The food is simply excellent - the chicken chops are a favourite, but if there's lamb in tomato on the specials list, go for it!
Mikalis has extended the outdoor area twice since we've been visiting, so as well as friendly service and great food you'll get a lovely view over Plakias and the bay.

Where to stay / Re: afternoon sun at Sofia
« on: June 12, 2012, 04:16:11 PM »
Hotel Sophia is very impressive. My last stay there was great - lovely rooms, well decorated and looked after. The staff are excellent too - Kostas and Chrysoula are always around and make sure standards don't slip.
The trouble is, people are getting to know - we couldn't get a booking there last year or this . Perhaps we'll try earlier next year.

Thanks 'Reception' for such a useful post. I'll make a copy of the taxi prices and build them into the new version of the website I'm still working on!

Great to see Nicos' big smile again. Looking forward to a drink with him in September! I'll try to get a message to him at Ostraco - or see if I can get an email address.

Trying not to think about sunny Plakias too much at the moment. We're not going until mid September this year. I'll be enjoying the UK summer (if we have one), and Cornish beaches until then.

I managed to get a little more done today. Raymond, I included a link to your site - and Noopsy, many thanks - typos now corrected!
Other bits and pieces added in from mails and previous posts.
Next job is to get some better pictures included, and sort out a proper banner.

Any comments gratefully received - especially additions or errors. Please check at www.ostraco.co.uk

Thanks Noopsy  and Steve - this is the sort of feedback that I need.
It looks as if I'll be busy tomorrow!
