Where to stay / First Choice Pull out of Plakias!
« on: July 07, 2004, 12:52:55 PM »
Just had to reply to the comments re Argo/Apollo.
We went to the Apollo with Argo earlier this year and could not fault it. We opted to take a hire car from the airport instead of the taxi transfer. Worked out at just over £900 for accomodation for 2 and 2 weeks car hire. The Apollo is a bit quiet and basic but has an excellent pool and is only about 2 mins walk to the beach/tavernas etc.
The first minimarket you come to on your stroll to the beach is run by a very friendly English couple who are always willing to help with any problems you may have They also run a small library.
Argo reps were always there at the appointed time and were much in evidence at the airport. Best holiday we've had for ages, will definately be back.

Where to go / First Visit

We used Argo Holidays (found on an internet search).
Stayed at the Apollo self catering 4-18 May. £309 each flying from Manchester at 0600 & from Heraklion at 1300.
The only downside is you then have to add taxi transfer at £109.00.
As we had planned to hire a car for a week we decided to make it 2 weeks starting & ending at the airport, so the taxi transfer went towards the car hire.
Total for the holiday was £970 for 2 people and 2 weeks car hire which we thought was not bad.
Next time we go I'm thinking of booking a cheap short notice holiday to anywhere on Crete and tell them we don't want the accomodation. Hire a car at the airport and then use "rent rooms" and spend 3 or 4 days at different places.
We could not fault Argo at all. Flights were with Air Malta, on time and the roomiest aircraft we have ever flown (Airbus 320 I think it was). I think they use Excel Airline later in the year.
All in all a really good holiday with no snags.

Plakias / Plakias Up Dates
« on: May 19, 2004, 06:40:16 AM »
We have just returned from Plakias after a 2 week stay.
This was our 1st stay in Plakias but hopefully not our last. We stayed at the "Apollo" - very quite - ideal for us as that's what we like.
We experienced our first "sandfall". Woke on thurs 6th to find the whole island completely covered in a thick layer of sand. What a mess. Apparently it comes from the Sahara Desert under certain weather conditions.
On the whole the weather was pretty good but we were driven from the beach a few times by cold winds.
We visited  Plakias a few years ago on a day trip and it was still pretty much as we remembered it. Not much sign of any major building work going on but while we were there 12 new beach umbrellas/sunbeds were installed along with a changing booth on the beach, also some new street lights are going in along the promenade.
Our best holiday on Crete so far, can't wait to go back

Hi John
Thanks for the map.
We are there for the first 2 weeks in May.
Any reports on the Apollo?

Eric

Where to stay / Apollo studios

My wife & I have visited Plakias for odd days on previous trips to Crete. This year we are staying there at the Apollo Studios, just wondering if anyone can guide me to the Apollo.
Also we have heard that prices have increased since the introduction of the Euro. Have you regulars seen any evidence of this?.
