Very - just been looking at close ups on Google maps and the distance between Youth Hostel and virtually anywhere in Plakias is very small in the context of a big fire and flammable olive groves.

Babis at Medousa was telling me of a fire a few years ago when he had lost hundreds of olive trees.
I was reading only the other day on the Sfakia web page of a local fire that burnt out thousand's of olive trees... they were speaking of the long distance that fire engines had to travel.
This got me thinking about Plakias, the nearest fire station I can think of is on the left hand side as you drop down into Rethymno. Is there one closer?

I've spoken to Babis, he said it was a big fire, in the olive trees between Plakias and Sellia. No-one was injured and the fire was now out but they had to watch for twenty-four hours as the fire can continue inside the olive trees, burning on the oil in the wood. He had been fighting the fire and sounded very tired.
