Does anybody whose been to Plakias this year know if Emily's back at Micro Amoudi?
She said that last year would definately be her final one but then she said that the year before and the year before that.

Hear! Hear!
I have no intention of abandoning Plakias and will continue to travel independently.
I may suffer a bit of inconvenience if the taxis and buses don't run but I'm more than prepared to take that risk.
I'm also looking forward to a few weeks of excellent Greek food; fresh, tasty and inexpensive.

Yes, there is a bus from Chania airport but it runs only five times a day. Therefore, it's necessary to take a taxi to the bus station.

By the way, when I was in Pal last year I'm sure Sunvil were still going there.

I visit both Paleochora and Plakias when I go to Crete. No need to take a taxi from Chania to Pal. You do need a taxi from the airport to Chania bus station (about €25) then take the bus to Pal. It's a lovely ride and a fraction the cost of a taxi. Timetables are on the web. Pal has a good "far end", though not as good as Plakias other than a taverna on that part of the beach.
I recommend Taverna Castello to stay. Superb position at the head of the beach with clean simple rooms, a lovely chap running the place and great breakfasts (extra charge).  Taverna Inochoos to eat; on the main town centre street and much better than any of the sea front places I tried.
I'll be there first week in July and then I take the buses from Pal to Plakias for another two weeks. Then the local buses from Plakias to Heraklion to fly home. What better (and cheaper) way to get around?
As much as I like Pal there's nowhere else like Plakias!

£50 for baggage?
I can't understand why anybody has any. I go to Paleochora for a week and then on to Plakias for two and take only a rucksack which I can carry into the aircraft cabin. After all, it is a beach holiday and I've yet to come across anywhere that insists on shirt and tie to dine.
So not only do I save myself the baggage charge but I'm usually first out of the airport and into the sunshine.

I agree with John that the best way for us to support our beloved Greece and Plakias is to continue to visit and spend, even if we have to endure a little inconvenience on the journey. We know how hard some of our friends in Plakias work in the season and they deserve our support more now than ever. This is what sets us apart from those who take a package to Malia and simply sit by a hotel pool all day. I still intend to make my regular two visits in July and September this year.
On the subject of locals paying tax Mike, don't jump to any conclusions about the doctor. I recently saw a consultant here in the UK and had to pay up front. He wasn't avoiding taxes but just ensuring he got paid. He'd obviosly been stung too many times previously. However, why single out the doctor? I, who uses plastic for almost everything I buy at home, use nothing but cash in Plakias and am fully aware of the reason why I sometimes don't receive a written receipt in a restaurant.
With our help they'll get through it.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Restaurants in Plakias
« on: January 31, 2012, 01:50:28 PM »
I've eaten at Sophia regularly over several years and have never had a problem with the meat. However, I only eat what is on display in the window - that's one of the reasons I go there; I like to see what I'm going to eat before it's served.
I agree the service is friendly. In 2011 Babbis and George were working there, both having been at Gorgona previously. They're both great guys.

I agree except that last year the fare was €1.10. You buy the ticket from the machine at the bus stop on the far side of the airport bus/short term car park area. The bus is the No 1 and leaves about every 10 minutes. You get off the bus in Elaftherias Square and basically start heading down hill towards the port.  It's not that far to walk down to the bus station (right next to the ferry port) but if you've got hand luggage  (as opposed to a back pack) greek parking (abandonment) makes the sidewalks a little tricky. Alternatively you can get off the bus before Elaftherias Square but you really need to know the route; I think it's just past McDonalds.
