PlakChat / GMaps - pedometer

Gmaps - pedometer
A really useful tool for finding out whether that long walk you went on really was as far as you thought.    I now know that it is just under 1.56km from Costas Chrysoullis to our favourite spot under the trees at the far end of the beach. You have to switch to satellite view for Crete but the imagery is good enough to recognise most places.

Where to go / Zante - request for recommendations
« on: April 18, 2006, 01:03:53 PM »
We are planning a last minute holiday to Zante (no holidays to Crete from stansted, this early in the season). Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for good or bad resorts. As a far-ender, it looks like we won't find any naturist beaches   . Never mind. Not surprisingly, we're looking for somewhere like Plakias. Any suggestions. Also, we like walking so info on the best (or any) places to walk would be appreciated.

Thanks

Where to go / Link to Holiday Photos - 2005

Little attempt to edit the photos - mainly scenery. Some failed to upload (mainly Plakforms meal photos) as the titles were too long. I may add them later.

Plakias / Cheapest way to phone home?
« on: September 02, 2005, 05:38:02 PM »
Can anyone tell us whether the public payphones in Plakias are still working? Last year some, if not most of the ones I tried didn't work. As more and more people use their mobiles I was concerned that the public payphones might have been left to rot. Alternatively, is there anywhere in Plakias to buy a SIM card for a Greek network? (I'm told that should work out cheaper than my UK PAYG SIM).

Thanks

Holiday Companies / Kosmar
« on: October 24, 2004, 02:52:45 PM »
Just booked for September 2005   I see that Gatwick flights go to Chania rather than Heraklion (may be the same from other UK airports - I didn't check). Looking forward to it being less chaotic than the night flight back from Heraklion. The price was lower than Olympic by about £60 per person (for 2 weeks) so well worth looking at.

Where to go / Suggestions for Walks
« on: October 04, 2004, 12:54:59 PM »
This year the cooler, breezier conditions made walking a bit easier . Here are a few suggestions based on our experiences.
First – arm yourself with a good local map. The Plakias Walker’s Map is fine but the Damnoni Area Map covers the same area with the same level of detail and is about 1.5 Euro cheaper. Available from a couple of the Supermarkets in Plakias.

1.   Plakias to Lefkoyia
Out of Plakias along the road, turn right at the main road, going to Lefkoyia, take the 2nd or 3rd, uphill. Keep going until you reach the irrigation channel. Turn right and follow it as it meanders through the hills. There will be several tracks leading back down to the main road but keep going until you see a church on the left. At the crossroads here you can turn right or continue on and take the next right. Both take you to Lefkoyia. From Lefkoyia you can take a back road/track running parallel to the main road which joins the road to Amoudi. From Amoudi, you can go via Damnoni and the Olive grove route to Plakias.

2.   Plakias to Finikas Monastery
Take a route of your choice to Selia, then take the road heading WSW slightly downhill across the valley leading to Souda. Be careful not to take a left turn which will take you down to Souda (although we did just that and managed to get across the river with only a couple of attempts). The road to Finikas Monastery is quite tortuous but a pleasant walk none the less – very peaceful. On the way back, you need to turn right, off the road before where the bulls are kept (Sept. 04) (take the thin black line on the map) The path is not at all clear but if you go through the olive grove and vegetable patch you can pick up a track for a while, then another ‘thin black line’ track (this one is easier to follow) takes you to a track leading to Souda. If you get there at the right time, you can get the train back to Plakias.

3.   Kali Sykea to Plakias
We got a taxi to Kali Sykea, then ambled down the road to a junction. Turned left to check out Aghios Ioannis. On the far side of Aghios Ioannis there is a track on the right which goes down into a small valley, then up again to Kanevos. After exploring the back streets there, we followed the road down through the gorge. It would have been possible to have dropped down to the dried out river bed (in the summer) but it’s not easy to tell how ‘lumpy’ that route is from the road so we didn’t try it. Once through the gorge, just after taking the left turn to Myrthios there is a track leading down towards the river bed. If you take this it goes down some way but then climbs again to join a track running along the Selia side of the valley. For another time, note that the track that runs parallel to this one, but a bit lower down gives excellent views of the old mills from above.
Eventually the track meets one of the rough roads going to Selia and you can turn left to get back to Plakias.

Plakias / September Holiday 2004
« on: September 18, 2004, 05:16:02 PM »
I'm sure those of us that were in Plakias in the first half of September will have many happy memories of ...  The Wind!!  :'( (It was a bit blowy wasn't it). We had a great time - even better than last year as the breeze made walking more pleasant. I hope to post a couple of photos once I've sorted through them but just wanted to say how nice it was bumping into some familiar friendly faces during the holiday. We made some new friends as well   - difficult not to in a place like Plakias. Back in 2005? You bet!

Where to stay / Stella Pension
« on: August 30, 2004, 04:12:21 PM »
This time next week we will be at Stella Pension. One thing I didn't think about was that, being B+B, I guess there will be no cooking facilities. Does anyone know whether there is anything like; a kettle, cups, plates, cutlery etc?

Forum and Website discussion / Is it a record ??
« on: August 13, 2004, 11:12:38 PM »
I see that the record for the most users online at one time was broken - now stands at 42 on 8th August. I suppose it must be true but I've never seen anywhere near that many users online at one time. Does anyone remember seeing lots of users on the 8th?

Where to eat...or not! / Vegetarian Food?
« on: August 18, 2003, 04:28:34 AM »
Not a problem for me but Karen doesn't eat meat. When we visit Plakias in Sept. we will probably do our usual thing of studying the menu of just about every eating establishment in the town but if anyone can recommend places that are particularly good for veggie food it would be good to know. Last year in Crete we discovered Briam - it would be good to try it again.

Where to go / Walks in the Plakias Area
« on: July 30, 2003, 01:15:14 PM »
For those who like walking, I saw information on two books that might be of interest. I can't vouch for the info on local availability though.

Info can be found on http://www.marengo.supanet.com/index.htm

'Ten Walks in the Plakias Area' .
Explore the magnificent coastal mountains and beautiful scenery of the area around Plakias, a lovely resort in southern Crete. The book features routes to interesting local villages. In spring this is probably the best resort in Crete for seeing the island's wildflowers.
Large-scale sketch maps of the villages Gianniou, Lefkoyia, Mariou, Myrthios, Plakias and Sellia are included within the text.
Accompanied by a double-sided A2 colour walkers' map of the area, at a scale of 4cm: 1km.
ISBN 1 900802 09 0

'Seven More and More Challenging Walks in the Plakias Area'.With longer and often more mountainous routes for the more experienced and adventurous walker, this book concentrates on the areas east and north of Plakias, including the Agios Ioannis valley. Reach nearby summits for even better views.
ISBN 1 900802 07 4

The books and maps are also available - with an extensive range of other items at very competitive prices - at the seafront Plakias Market supermarket in Plakias, near the Livikon Hotel and bus stop.
