Other than Olympic, are there any other travel companies which serve Plakias ?

Only Olympic from the U.K. you can arrange you own travel via jet 2.com, Ryanair, etc into chania or Hiram.ion.

We used BA to visit early in May, scheduled flight into Heraklion and booked a room at Skinos, just outside the village on the Souda road.
While it costs a little more than Olympic charge (and of course, no last minute deals!), the flexibility is great. This year we stayed in Plaka on the NE of the island to visit Spinalonga and Knossos, then drove down via Ierapetra to Plakias. The drive was enjoyable but too far for a day-trip from Plakias.

There used to be. It is possible to do independently - we've managed it twice (once with Mum in tow) and friends frequently fly in to either Heraklion or Chania. Most of the key accommodation is on line and bookable and although the taxis can be a bit expensive from the airports, the bus service isn't that bad..if you have the patience. It's worth trying.

I always travel independently using easyJet, from Gatwick to either Chania or Heraklion, and the local buses to get to Plakias. It's easy but you need to choose your flight times to fit in with the buses. Many of the accommodations in Plakias are now available on Booking.com making the reservations very easy and, allegedly, at the best prices.

We haven't used the buses on Crete, but elsewhere on Greek islands we have been very happy with the service, even on small islands.
If you have the time to treat the bus journey as a part of the holiday, I could thoroughly recommend it.
