    no buses up there...it's the south edge of the lassithi plateau ( looking north ) the bus stop sign is an E4 sign

the E4 walking route ( in crete) starts at kato zakros and ends in kissamos



if you then turn south you've got a high plateau called something like limanatou, that's wrong..i know but without getting out a book, thats the best i can do

I'm sorry to bring such an old thread back from the depths, but i'm currently doing some research of the Maleme Airfield and the battles that took place around there during the battle for Crete in 1941.

The photos in this thread of the Iron Bridge are the only recent ones I've ever seen and are wondering if you have anymore of the actual bridge, from either looking at the bottom of the bridge or the top of it? Also if there are any pictures of the Airfield or River would be great to

firstly don't be sorry about bringing up old threads, i have often said there is so much lost information in old threads and as a group we tend to treat them as defunct but new group members can get so much from them

i have quite a few current pictures of the bridge and the tavronitis river bed, it's an great place to anyone with an interest in the battle of crete, i was able to get on the air field during the 2001 celebrations which was just about impossible when it was a working army base.

i've also many pictures of WW2 memorials and places of importance in the battle and the resistance, having visited a lot of them

  i'm sure there's many on the forum cringing about one of my favourite subjects being brought up  sorry

what especially are you looking into?

this is one of my favourites

it's a view over Maleme Friedhof, looking down to the airfield

the german cemetary is a very moody place, they don't have the lightness of a CWGC cemetary

Sorry I haven't replied to this topic after I posted, been rather busy with life and work etc.

I'm looking for pictures from on top of the bridge to see how it's made ie the layout of support beams, railings and so on, also any from the underside of the bridge and the riverbed it's located in.

I'm also after pictures of the Maleme Airfield, Hill 107 (Hill beside the airfield), roads in the area etc. Also if anyone has a street map of the town of Maleme I would be indebted to them for ever and would give you my first born as payment.

Other pictures that might come in handy are any left over defenses that may still stand from 1941, weather these be old trench systems or barbed wire entanglements etc.

I know I'm asking alot, but seeing I'm way over here in New Zealand and can't afford to travel to Crete

have a look at this gallery and you may find the shots of the bridge you are looking for, feel free to use them unless it's a commercial venture, but let know what you are using them for anyway

i do have some others that i'll upload later

a street map of Maleme? that would be pretty thin, there's the one main road running thru the town and a few side roads off it

courtesy of the good people at g00glemaps you can get a very good idea of the place

the main road comes out of the town and takes a sharp left by the airfield then a sharp right over the (new) tavronitis bridge, the old bridge is visible on the screenshot

there's very little left that would indicate there was a battle there, don't forget it was a working army base for a long long time, so they are not going to be leaving battlefield scrap around. Apart from the bullet holes in the bridge supports, i can only think of the remains of some pill boxes on the beaches (but that was from long after the battle) i believe that the rear doors of one of  Roy Farrans tanks are now used as a gate in Galatas but i've never seen them
