Hello Tom,
Re. home distillation, good luck to you in Norway if you know what you are doing. There would be significant penalties if you were caught doing it in the UK.
As a matter of interest in these times of heightened security, I wonder what the authoriities are making of people taking the unlabelled bottles of raki (40+% alcohol) that are for sale in Plakias on to planes.

Try to read it... it's horrible! (if it is true, but no spam has joined me since I voted )
Got me wondering how I knew to do it before...
Jan posted about it here.

Hello We have been going to Plakias since the early '90s, we rent our cars from Alianthos, they meet us at the airport and if you wish a driver will take you down to resort at no extra cost, this must be arranged before you travel, at the end of a long journey especially at night this is a good idea Daisy
Quote from: PloppyThe bay where we ate, drank, slept and swam was lovely. The water was so warm (noticebly warmer than Plakias).Yes, that's what I want!
Do you confirm the time to reach is about 1.5 hour (each time)?Quote from: PloppyProbably because it is so shallow, I swam out a good 50-100M and it was still only up to my waist!I must be in there!
Maybe you too want again...?
Look for me going in Plakias at late September...
(first time! I need also good friends to teach me the tips )
Beachcombeeeers! I'm coming!!!
Quote from: Noopsy 500Yes - I must admit, I was thinking the same. I was expecting the pins that look like inverted teardrops - pointed at the bottom. If these could be simply colour coded to indicate the different categories, they could be kept quite small. Thanks again, Paul, for all your hard work.Quote from: GeorgeI do have one critisism though, keep in mind all the hotels, apartments, bars, taverners and other places of interest that readers might want to see, the map is going to be a bit overloaded with pins,It's a pity that the pins have such large heads. In these circumstances the proposed map will only be really usable if you use maximum zoom-in.
Quote from: beachcombersNevertheless, as Mike G says, in the UK the private distillation of spirits is illegal; you'll have Revenue & Customs knocking on your door if you tried it!QuoteQuoteWith the help of the booklet everybody should be able to create his own raki in the kitchen...... except distillation of ethanol (i.e. alcohol) is illegal in the UK and potentially dangerous as you could concentrate the small quantities of methanol (wood alcohol), which is highly toxic amd makes you go blind.

It is not possible to make wood alcohol in toxic quantities from fermented graperesidues. The mentioned "high potential risk" as often mentioned is a therefore a fairy tale.

When you get to Matala make sure to go to the taverna perched on the top of the rocks to the east of the bay. It is run by wonderful people, they always seem to have something 'etoimo' that the whole family eats and is absolutely delicious. And as if that weren't enough they have a terrace overlooking the sea that gives you the most fantastic view of the sunset
You lucky, lucky thing
