Where to eat...or not! / Re: Sirocco Restaurant
« on: March 23, 2014, 03:08:45 PM »
Richard;

Thank you for your comments

And I do agree that anywhere in Plakias that does disappoint should be flagged up on the board.

There are so many other places to eat in the town that the problem is that in a 2 week stay, you can not do justice to them all.

( and we will try Geo Ma in June. I shall report back)

We too have overlooked the Gio Ma and don't really know why.

Is it worth a visit ?

I am a little confused.

Is your problem with Christos or with Sirocco ?

If it is with Christos then should it be under another topic other than Sirocco Restaurant ?

From our point of view, we have never used Christos so can not comment.

But we have used Sirocco very many times ( see earlier posting on this place) and have never been disappointed with it

We look forwards to visiting them again when we return in early June.

Plakias / Re: Plakias in slow decline
« on: November 10, 2013, 10:39:36 PM »
We will go along with those thoughts, John.

We have seen many Greek resorts change over the very many years we have been visiting there.
When they changed too much for our taste, then we moved on.

But Plakias has not reach that stage for us.
And not by quite some way !!
Crete is still our island of choice and Plakias our resort of choice.

Yes, the mix of nationalities has altered and moved more towards the eastern European countries.
A good thing or not ?
We all have our own opinions on that (but not control of it)

Are we alone in thinking that it is good to be in a resort where the majority of voices which you hear are NOT British ?

And the town will come to terms with those changes of nationality and move on.

A few "cosmetic" changes have been made of late and not all of them are for the better but the spirit of the place remains alive and kicking.

We shall be back again in early June with George at Creta Mare and look forward to renewing old friendships.

Where to stay / Re: Good hotels?
« on: July 02, 2013, 03:52:38 PM »
My thoughts exactly, Mike.

A shared starter, 2 mains and 1 litre of wine NEVER cost us more than 30 euros, even with a tip.
And we have yet to leave any tavern in Plakias feeling hungry.

We have travelled widely to very many Greek resorts, island and mainland, but Plakias is by far the most reasonably priced place we have found.

But taking the cost from the equation, surely a major part of the Greek holiday experience is a glass of wine on the balcony with some olives and maybe a little feta, after the beach and a shower and watch the sun go down over the dragons head ?
And then to and evening meal at any one of (for us) 6 places and to sit and people watch as we finish the wine.
Often the end of a perfect holiday day.

Plakias / Re: The Bakery
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:02:47 PM »
Half the size ?
I did not think that the size of the bakery had altered from 2011.

It was very much as it always was, as was the choice and quality of bread and cakes etc.
We used it every day and were well pleased with it.

The outside part had changed but was not fully open when we left 10 days ago so I can't say what that will end up as.

As for the bakery up by Muses, that was closed for the 2 weeks we were in Plakias and showed no signs of re-opening any time soon.

The main bakery, next to the camping site, has been refurbished and re-opened about 2 weeks ago.
Still very much as it was inside but outside has changed somewhat.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Sirocco Restaurant

We go along with all that has been said about the "new" Sirocco.

We were regulars since 2006 at Sirocco when Stavros and Maria ran it and always ate there a least 4 times each holiday.

To find that they and their son Babis had moved on caused us some concern about what may become of the place.

But on our return to Plakias this year we found that we had no cause to worry.

The new owners, cousins of Stavros, have made a excellent job in their takeover of the taverna and the food now is more varied than before and at least of as good in quality as before.

It is now just as good as it always was and it was good to see regulars from the Stavros era returning to eat at the tavern.

In fact, one night Stavros and Maria were there eating whist we were there.
It was really good to see them again.
They are well and living in a village just outside Plakias.

Of all the things which have changed in Plakias, the Sirocco is one which has been a great success.

We aim to return to Plakias next June and we will continue to make Sirocco one of our main eating places.

Plakias / Re: Sifis
« on: June 16, 2013, 11:50:31 AM »
We ate with Sifi and Anna twice for dinner and 3 times for lunch this visit.

Always good food and always a great reception.
We think that all good eating places need a "front of house" character to make them stand out and enhance the eating out experience.
Sifi certainly has that.
Some places, whilst the food is excellent, lack a bit of atmosphere.

Portion size can be a bit daunting at times !!
But for "plainer" food for a change, Sifi is always worth a visit.

Sifi was the first person we met on our first visit to Plakias
We arrived late at night when all else was closed and went to eat with him
2 hours later well fed and full of his wine, we staggered back to our hotel.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Harakas !
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:35:50 PM »
Just back from Plakias and our first port of call was Harakas for dinner.

As been stated, the layout of Harakas has changed over the last year.
Part of the old site was taken over by a travel company and we feared for what we may find on our visit this year.

But Sonja and Lambros were able to obtain extra footage at the other side, next to Kri Kri, so the overall size of the place has not been altered.

Now one half is under cover whilst the other half is open to the air.
We felt that this was a much better arrangement and that the changes enforced on Sonja have in fact benefitted her !!

Food , as always , was excellent.

Portion size ?
Never was or is a problem.

Service warm and welcoming.

Will always be the first place we eat at each year we return to Plakias.

Plakias / Holiday report from 30th May to 13th June
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:29:39 PM »
We are just back from 2 weeks holiday in Plakias, our 10th visit since 2006.
We did not visit Plakias in 2012 so some of the changes we saw might not be as recent as we thought.

These our our observations and views:

Fights:
We flew with Eastjet from Manchester 7.10 Thursday morning and arrive in Iraklion 13.20in the afternoon.
Return flights to Manchester 2pm Thurdsay 13th June.
All flights on time and service by airline first class.

Hotel:
We stayed with George at the Creta Mere for the 8th time and as usual had room no 7.
The hotel is "basic Greece" but spotlessly clean and the view from the balcony is to die for.
We will return to Creta Mere same time (ish) next year

Weather:
We have usually been to Plakias about the second 2 weeks in May and had some very mixed weather.
So we thought to go a little later to see if thing improved.
Were quite surprised at the mix of weather we had.
The weather was very unpredictable.
Yes, 14 days of sun and no rain ( except for a down pour on our return drive to the airport)
And only one very windy day which kept us from the beach.
But it never seemed to be settled into early Greek summer weather.
But if truth were known , we would gladly settle for the same again next year !!

Eating out:
We used Harakas, Sirocco,Sifis, Kastello and Medousa.
There are many more to chose from but only so many nights to do so.

Harakas:
Topclass food and sevice.
Our favourite place to eat in Plakias
Thank you Sonja.

Sirocco:
Under new owners since Stavros and Maria Left 2 years ago.
Food now is as good as, if not better, than before.
We ate there 4 times and will make it a regular haunt in future

Sifi:
Sifi is as Sifi always was

Kastello:
Food goodbut the place was almost empty when we ate there
The walk back in the dark can be a bit of a problem

Medousa:
Good food and service.
First week good with very mixed nationalities.
The second week it became far to Anglicised for us.

Clothed/unclothed:
We thought that this year the mix of clothed and unclothed beach goers was just about right.
The sunbeds outside the last beach bar (opposite Pelagrinos) were for clothed bathing and there were signs up to that effect.
The next 100 yards of beach was a "transition zone" with the first 20 yards clothed, going to nude bathing after that up to the far end sunbeds.
All seemed to us to be in order with little or no problems.
But others may have other views.

Changes in Plakias:
As said, we did not go last year so these may not be new changes
The supermarket next to the campsite has doubled in size and now stocks everything you could need.
They have also built a huge concrete extension at the back of the supermarket which noone seems to know what for ?
The main bakery has been refurbished and opened Monday 9th June  and is much as it was, still very good.
A few places were closed and either left empty or replaced with other things but on the whole, Plakias is as Plakias was, at least to our eyes.

Visitor mix:
First week was very quiet with a very wide range of nationalities
The second week was very much busier and the percentage of English/British voices heard increased a lot.
But the town was still only half full or just over when we left.
Eating out in the evening, there was not one place at which a table or more could be had at peak eating times.

Holiday overall was top class and we will be back same time, same places, next June.

Where to eat...or not! / Re: Harakas !
« on: March 19, 2013, 03:02:23 PM »
Harakas was and will be one of our favorite eating places in Plakias.

The service is first class , as is the food.

Portion size ?
Never a problem in all the times we have been there.

Sonia her husband Lambros and staff run a very well presented and well organised outfit.

Can't wait until our next Plakias "fix" at the end of May and Harakas will be one of the first places at which we eat.

Plakias / Re: Sun Beds
« on: August 13, 2012, 08:25:02 PM »
A welcome and alternative view and one with which we have some sympathy.

And the "far end" is by far the best and safest area of the beach on which to let children swim and play.

Plakias is changing, as all resorts will over time, and not all of the changes are for the worse.

Maybe opening up all the of the beach to all kinds of visitors is a change which the local poulation see as an improvement which will bring in more and more varied holiday makers to the town ?

As for us, well we have voted with our feet and our wallets.

It was Skiathos in May and will be Stoupa in early September.

But  it was not the beach or the sunbeds or the weather or the changes to the town which made us change.

It is the distance from either of the 2 airports to Plakias which is the problem.
The drive from Heraklion and or Chania is one which I can do without at my age.

Taxi charges too and from Plakias ?

And the coach transfer if using Olympic ?
3 or 4 hours on a coach.
Sorry, but not for us.

We feel that we may have seen the best of Plakias and maybe it is time to move on ?
